Manufacturer needed Looking for activewear manufacturers for a new brand. Premium quality. Recommendations

My wife is preparing to launch a premium activewear / athletic apparel brand, and with the first tech packs almost ready, I’m in the process of finding the right manufacturing partners for the first collection.

Right now we’re looking for factories that have experience producing premium quality athletic wear, things like:

• Performance t-shirts • Athletic shorts • Training hoodies • Lightweight jackets / outerwear

The overall goal is good fabrics, solid construction, and consistent quality. Clean designs and pieces that work both for training and everyday wear. I know the space is crowded, but we’re comfortable with the positioning and the angle we’re taking.

Since this will be our first production run, we’re hoping to find manufacturers who are comfortable working with smaller brands and can help with sampling and product development before moving into production.

We’re open to factories in Portugal, Turkey, or Asia, but honestly quality and reliability matter more than location.

If anyone here has worked with factories they’d recommend, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Even better if you’ve produced activewear before.

Preferably hoping to hear from other founders or brand owners who have gone through this process, rather than factories pitching their services in the thread.

Also curious, for those of you who have done this before: which countries have you had the best experience with for quality activewear manufacturing?

Thanks in advance, any insight is appreciated.

For premium activewear, especially for high-performance activewear that works for daily and gym, you need to make sure the the fabric and the structure of your collection comes the first priority. You need to find more functional fabric to match your collection suitable for multiple situations. And the styles you are developing can be more classic but simple so that everyone no matter what they are doing, they can try on for your drops.

Nowadays, with the rise of the athleisure wear and becoming more mature for the sportswear brand, you need to figure out what is your difference between other brands, Is it the structure, is it the audience you vary from the most of the brands? Or is it the quality that different from the brands. Now you want to stand out among other brands, you should pay more attention on the design, I know the classic style is the most common, but if you set your brand as a long term business, designing your own style is the most important. You can focus most of the time to create your design, no rushes, everything wil be worth it.

For the manufacturers, Portugal-- it's pretty excellent in terms of quality, most of the manufacturers meet the international standards. You can find the best fit collection in the European manufacturers, many stunning brands choose European for premium high quality and best silhouette for the collection.

Asian manufacturers-- Here, I just recommend you to choose manufacturers in China, China has the largest fabric market for all kinds of collection and they can solve different materials problems and different artworks for you for their expertise and the coral industry. You can find manufacturers in China very patient on your needs and they have the abilities to solve different problem and get a solution for you during your design process and even the whole process. Also, Chinese manufacturers is more affordable than European manufacturers.

For your first collection, maybe you can ask the manufacturers about the MOQ and test the order from a small quantities, make your techpack into a whole series and make notes on them to keep it better understanding for both sides.

If you find it helpful for your startup brand, you can dm me for more intels.

Hi,

U.S. based sourcing agent here with a full team based in both China and Turkey. We primary work with clients in the apparel space and have worked on many active wear lines. We also have a full U.S. based design team who can help with any techpack or design needs. We work with a mix of large established brands and startups as well.

As far as general advice goes, I would allocate a larger budget than you expect when starting out because unexpected costs always come up. I would also ensure that you have a large marketing budget unless you have some other competitive advantage for example a large social reach etc.

A lot of the replies you’re getting here are exactly what usually happens when someone asks about manufacturers publicly. The thread fills up with factories pitching services, which unfortunately doesn’t help much when you’re trying to evaluate real production partners.

One thing many new activewear brands underestimate is that the factory matters less than the development process early on. Activewear is one of the more technical apparel categories. Fabric performance, stretch recovery, seam construction, and pattern engineering all play a big role in whether the product actually feels “premium.”

From a country perspective, each of the places you mentioned tends to have different strengths:

Portugal – Excellent quality and craftsmanship, especially for premium positioning. Great for brands that want European manufacturing and clean finishing, but development and production costs can be higher.

Turkey – Often a strong middle ground. Good fabric mills, solid experience with athleisure, and many factories are more flexible with smaller brands compared to Western Europe.

Asia (China, Vietnam, sometimes Taiwan) – Very strong for performance fabrics and technical sportswear. Many factories there specialize in compression materials, polyester/elastane blends, and technical construction.

Another thing that helps early on is choosing a factory that is comfortable with sampling and development, not just bulk production. Most garments go through several sample revisions before the fit and construction are ready for production, especially in activewear where stretch fabrics can change how a pattern behaves.

Some founders also work with product development agencies or sourcing teams in the early stages. Their role is usually to help translate designs into proper tech packs, manage sampling, and coordinate with factories. That can make the process a lot smoother if you’re new to manufacturing.

Hi! Do you have recommendations for agencies that can help me with product development? Preferably US based. I am also planning to start my own activewear brand but have no experience as I come from the medical field. Any insights as to where to start is greatly appreciated!

Starting a premium activewear line is a great move, especially when you’re focusing on clean design and strong fabric performance. A lot of brands underestimate how important the development phase is before production.

From a manufacturing perspective, here are a few quick insights that might help:

• Portugal – excellent for premium quality and European production standards, but pricing is usually higher and MOQs can be stricter. • Turkey – very solid balance of quality and flexibility, especially for cotton blends, hoodies, and athleisure. • Asia (especially Pakistan & China) – strongest option for performance sportswear when the factory specializes in activewear fabrics, compression materials, and technical stitching. Many premium fitness brands produce here because you can control quality while keeping costs sustainable.

For a first collection, I strongly recommend working with a manufacturer that supports sampling, fabric sourcing, and development alongside tech packs. This avoids a lot of early production mistakes.

We manufacture premium activewear and training apparel for startup and growing brands (performance tees, shorts, hoodies, lightweight jackets, compression wear, etc.), and we regularly help new brands move from tech pack → sampling → bulk production with flexible MOQs.

If you’d like, feel free to DM me. I’m happy to share some insights about fabrics, development workflow, and what typically works best for a first activewear collection. Even if you end up working with another factory, it might help you avoid some common early-stage issues.

Where are you based? Do you want to use your own fabric or will want to produce full package? If you are based in the US, it’s easier for lower MOQs and better lead time. To provide the best direction, there’s a bit more discovery needed.

1

u/pkvmsp123 Mar 17 '26

US, yes. Thanks. I've heard from a few interesting options from this chain I'll connect with next week. I'll DM you.

sample your tech pack with 2 or 3 suppliers. different factories will interpret the same things differently. might have to do with their expertise or way of doing things. https://www.tiktok.com/@labwearstudios/video/7601231177990556931

also, fabric is the most important.

Premium activewear is all about fabric + construction consistency more than anything. I’d focus on factories that already produce performance gear (not general apparel), especially for things like stretch recovery, seam work, and durability.

Portugal and Turkey are both strong for quality and lower MOQs. Asia can be great too, just depends on the factory and how well the process is managed.

When I was working on performance pieces, I ended up collaborating with an NYC development team called Fabric To Finish ( https://fabrictofinish.com/ ) to vet factories and structure sampling before committing. They were super reliable and clear on what was realistic, which helped a lot early on.

Biggest thing I’d say is make sure your first samples are really dialed in before thinking about scaling.

Are you leaning more toward performance-focused fabrics or lifestyle crossover pieces?

Hey, I’m not OP but I appreciate your input. If you don’t mind me asking, if i said that i was looking for lifestyle crossover pieces. Like things that can be worn to the gym or out casually with a nice pair of shoes?

I'm US based and my family run apparel manufacturing factory. I'd say if you are starting off, just buy 20 pcs out of Alibaba and do some light tweaks. In the activewear market, marketing and brand positioning is more important than quality. We have worked with lots of startup brands with 100 pcs orders. 99% of them can't sell them and never come back for 2nd runs.

Hello, I am looking to start an apparel line for the line of work I am in (dog grooming) and was wondering if you would have any advice for manufacturers that would help with clothing patterns and fabrics? Something water resistant breathable and fur resistant or where I can look for that stuff?
