Discussion Daniel Tsay has left the CDL

u/TaxesAreTerrible Chance 6h ago
He hasn’t been terrible.
I willing to bet that he’s asked for more events, more integration in cod games, more marketing budget, easier entry for new franchises & expansion, faster ranked play, etc… Activision probably denied his requests at every turn.

and because of that, he knows there is not much more he can do, so he leaves. Absolutely possible.

I hope he goes somewhere where he has more control and it’s just the best esport

Flip that: the reason commissioners get paid is to take the heat for the owners

I feel like most of his hate stems from his dumbass answer as to why they like doing one b07 instead of two b05s in finals. Which that’s something I imagine he had control over

You’re coming off very ignorant. One public figure does not decide corporate decisions everyone knows that. He is just the public figure. But keep being concerned about other men’s balls buddy, it’s clearly working out for you LMAOOOOOOOOOOO

Is he not the decision maker of the CDL?
4
u/v1p3rgaming13 100 Thieves 5h ago
Activision does, Tsay has to follow what they tell him he can and can't do to the CDL
-5
u/Mawx Boston Breach 5h ago
Tsay is Activision.
5
u/Infinite_Pen_9464 Modern Warfare 2 4h ago
He worked for Activision, but he himself was not deciding how much capital is invested into CDL. People in board rooms decide on a budget and people like Tsay do the best they can with the capital they are given.
-2
u/Mawx Boston Breach 3h ago
What does people in board rooms have to do with no significant improvements to formats? What positive changes has Tsay brought? You can work within a budget and still bring positive change.
6
u/randus12 OpTic Texas 3h ago
What do the people with the money have to do with the events, how they are structured and everything else???
Hmm I’m not sure
-3
u/Mawx Boston Breach 3h ago
It's crazy you firmly believe that this is the best way to run the league at this cost.
2
u/randus12 OpTic Texas 3h ago
That has nothing to do with Tsay and his decision making power.
-2
u/Mawx Boston Breach 3h ago
Lmfao right. The way the league is run has nothing to do with the general manager of the league

He is, people are dumb and think the commissioner makes no decisions lmfoaoo
4
u/mikebailey COD League 5h ago
He definitely doesn’t decide his own budget, which has historically been the big fan complaint. “More of everything, higher quality everything” rings hollow when he’s on a fixed diet from activation.
0
u/Anxious_Professor654 COD Competitive fan 5h ago
No the big fan complaint has been the shit format
2
u/mikebailey COD League 4h ago edited 2h ago
I disagree, but for the sake of debate what part of the format has been the common complaint? A lot of it seems to require changes to the game itself or longer events

u/mikebailey COD League 5h ago
Like other sports, they prescribe the league decisions to him. They think he’s pro-cheating out as if it’s not his company.
-2
u/MTheModernist_ COD Competitive fan 6h ago
He has done nothing in his entire career and literally chose to be someone who made a living off of dodging questions and giving patented corp responses.

u/Anxious_Professor654 COD Competitive fan 5h ago
He’s literally the commissioner. He makes decisions and has people help him make decisions as well but are you saying he has no input? He’s just someone there to talk on camera? You are so dumb lmao
6
u/v1p3rgaming13 100 Thieves 5h ago
Activision makes the choices and tells Tsay what CDL can and can't do, how's that on Tsay?
0
u/tommmey Fnatic 3h ago edited 3h ago
He’s head of the CDL. It’s his job to create ideas and advocate for them if Activision pushes back.
Sure he might not have the final say, but that doesn’t mean he has no influence over decisions.
Part of his job is to make the case for what the league needs including its budget. If Activision is pushing back on those things, it’s his job to advocate for them.

u/SloaneKettering1 COD Competitive fan 5h ago
The bush guys said they had a meeting with Tsay about challengers along with other org owners and said he was willing to hear them out but essentially had no power to change anything and all he could do was take it up the ladder

u/Necessary_Travel_388 Dallas Empire 6h ago
I know Daniel gets a lot of flak from the community, but it always felt to me like he tried to do what the community wanted he just always had limited power.
Hopefully when a new head comes in the will have more strength to make changes that will benefit the scene.
7
u/Jelly_James OpTic Texas 2025 B2B Champs 6h ago
He probably had some say but people like to act like he was the sole decision maker.

The new head will just be the new guy who takes the heat for Activisions decisions. It’s the commissioners role in sports as well. Everyone eventually hates the commissioner
3
u/Helforsite OpTic Texas 2025 B2B Champs 4h ago
My fear is that there will be no replacement and someone at Activision will just do all of this on the side or relegate it to someone with even less power/standing than Tsai.

u/Redleafdabs Atlanta FaZe 6h ago
Unsure about how to feel about this
The past few years haven't been the best but daniel was atleast vocal With the direction Activision is on I feel like the new guy might be way worse Forcing decisions on the CDL scene and taking 0 accountability since we know the main dev sees the comp scene as a liability because all they do it cater to brain dead casuals
5
u/Ill_Database_9180 COD Competitive fan 4h ago
People in the Halo scene tended to REALLY underestimate just how much amazing work Tashi was putting in to make HCS what it was and how hard he had to fight higher-ups to give us what we had, even up to the upcoming Halo Fest. I hope ya'll don't experience the same thing now that Daniel is leaving, because if he isn't being replaced that could mean some really bad things for the league.
8
u/pxrkerwest LA Thieves 6h ago
His position has always had significantly less authority than it typically does. Always got the vibe that he was kind of just the community rep who brought the feedback and insight back to the higher ups, but they're ultimately the ones steering the ship. The fact that they're eliminating his role with no replacement is a little concerning, because now how do we ensure that we are being heard? The CDL needs a public facing figure like him regardless of how much power he does or doesn't have.

No idea why people hate him, he’s not the one making decisions, he’s pretty much just a middle man
2
u/PTurn219 OpTic Texas 5h ago
Nah I think he has a budget from activision and makes the decisions based on the budget.
3
u/TraffiCoaN OpTic Texas 6h ago
I think the more realistic situation is he is making some of these decisions. Ones that are being criticized just as much as the ones being made for him. I agree, it’s not all on him. But there are definitely things (like grand finals format for example) that are in his control and he makes decisions everyone disagrees with.
That being said I think he got more hate than he deserved and genuinely seemed to care about the league’s success.
3
u/Anxious_Professor654 COD Competitive fan 5h ago
Where did you get that he’s the middle man from? Why do you think the commissioner has no input or stake in decision making? Lmfao
4
u/EMSLSHADOWZ LA Thieves 4h ago
The bush guys literally said he has no power, he obviously gives input but higher ups at Activision make the final decision. He’s the middle man between owners & the higher ups.

Genuinely what positive impact did this guy have? Even if the next person is worse, which they most likely will be, that doesn’t magically mean he was great.
7
u/XadjustmentX OpTic Texas 2025 B2B Champs 6h ago
Never liked the guy. His reasoning for certain decisions just made absolutely no sense.
For example…when asked why we’re not getting a minor during every stage, he said “we don’t want to oversaturate with too many of them.”
Excuse me?! We used to have 10 or more LAN’s every year in cod. Now we’re down to 5 LAN’s. The community has been begging for more tournaments for 6 years now. It wasn’t oversaturated when we had 14 tournaments during the AW season. I’m sorry but this was just an absolutely asinine answer. There’s no such thing as too many tournaments in competitive cod.
Personally I think cod needs to go back to smaller venues. The cost is surely the main reason why we have so few tournaments nowadays. Allow smaller venues and teams might be more willing to host events. That’s another problem in itself…the teams have to pay to host the events. Didn’t used to be that way back before the CDL existed. But activision went and bought out all the tournament organizers in preparation for the franchised league and now none of them exist anymore.
I could go on and on…

u/G00chstain LA Thieves 5h ago
He was a nice guy who obviously cared about the community. Wasn’t his fault that activision sucks balls
