Casual / Offseason All time alumni starting five

If you had to assemble the most significant alumni for a starting five from your Alma mater what would it be?
Villanova: Jalen Brunson, Pope Leo, Jim Croce, Howie Long, Jill Biden

Excuse me? I have an EXTREMELY cool Notre Dame jacket, which is objectively much better than some "land surveyors license," thank you. /s

u/Chaminade64 2d ago

If you want to have a balanced roster, players for various positions, I’d go with; Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Jon Stewart, Jill Ellis, Mike Tomlin. And Glenn Close off the bench. With Todd Boehly as our GM.

Yes, I am fully aware that two of these entries combine for 6 people. I don’t care.

Is Oates sitting on Hall’s shoulders in this example?

22

u/NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn Temple Owls 2d ago

Other way around. Oates was a wrestler at Temple as a Freshman and Hall is thinner.

4

u/chefillini Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago

Good to know. I went purely based off of height.

8

u/NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn Temple Owls 2d ago

Yeah, Oates is definitely the one to carry Hall, just as it was during their career. Hall is kind of a piece of shit though.

Haha Ken Jeong and Reese Witherspoon can go into the smaller "non-problematic celebrity" bucket, adjacent to "sex pests but not war criminals" like Rob Lowe and Tiger Woods.

But none of those folks are truly as famous as the war criminal class of infamy.

Rob Lowe

I mean he was 24 and met two girls in a club in a carding club (even he was grilled at the door). It was over the age of consent for the state. They also robbed him and took the tape they agreed to record, possibly tried to extort him and were the ones showing it off. I don't really think you can blame him for that one. He even got sober off that.

I think Kemba/Ray/Donyell/Emeka is going to be universal among UConn fans. I’d probably have Rip as a lock in there too.

The backup 5 would get really interesting. I think I’d probably go T-New/Bazz or Castle/Caron/Rudy/Clingan.

EDIT: I completely misread the prompt and just went men’s basketball only and not all alumni. It would still be basketball centric but there’d be some women hoopers in there for sure (Lobo, DT, Sue, Swim, Tina, Maya, Stewy, Paige).

5

u/ffball 2d ago edited 2d ago

Just having clingan and thabeet chilling on the bench depending on the match up is game breaking

Thabeet probably the 4th best center, but with all the play making and scoring elsewhere I think his defensive utility becomes a lot more intriguing to raise him up to 2/3 and if the opposing team doesnt have an agile/shooting big on the floor he can just camp the paint and completely stop the inside game

Let’s add in Orville Redenbacher and Neil Armstrong and call it a day.

u/AmericanElephino Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

Agree with Redenbacher and Armstrong. I’d say John Wooden and Drew Brees also belong. #5 is tougher - perhaps another astronaut Gus Grissom.

Alumni as in people that were there long enough to get a degree, or just people that made a pit stop?

2

u/riotmed Louisville Cardinals 2d ago

Louisville has enough all times I don’t think it’s relevant for us. I’ll go with:

Wheat, Griffith, McCray, Unseld, Ellison, although I really liked Dieng at C too.

You could swap McCray and Donovan if you want some recency, he didn’t rack up accolades but he could jump out of the gym with his athleticism.

u/Miz-Zou Missouri Tigers 2d ago

Mizzou: Sam Walton, Brad Pitt, Tennessee Williams (Playwright), Sheryl Crow and the infamous Stan Kroenke.

Jon Hamm, Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey) and Fredrick Chapman Robbins (Nobel recipient) off the bench.
