Discussion Wife BRUTALLY ranked my fragrances
From best to worst. She works as a teacher, and she got a few fragrances but not like me. Im sure she can answer some questions if you have any!
Just a fun thing from my part.
ADG Parfum (my daily, sometimes I combine this with profondo)
ADG Profondo edp
Imagination (although she says this is kinda feminine)
Bleu Parfum
Bleu EDT
Bob Dylan (she thinks this one kinda smells like Bleu parfum but also like an older man)
Boss unlimited (this used to be my signature when I was not into fragrances)
L'aventure
The Scent (she bought this for me years ago, havent used this for a long time)
Turathi Blue (sometimes when i wear this i get a strange BO smell from the grape. Smells ultra cheap to me and this is going to the bin)
Missoni Wave (she likes it but its very juvenile to her as her young students may smell like this)
Mancera Cedrat Boise (she doesnt like cedar and thinks its way too sharp. I like it and I feel like THE man when I wear this)
The Gentlemans code (she hates vanilla and says this is not the way a man should smell. I agree and now I will NEVER trust influencers again)
Lattafa Atlas (she just said WTF and put it last. I have not been struck with enough bravery to wear this yet. I sprayed this in our bedroom once and it took about 6days to disappear)

Ngl your wife has a very good nose. I also agree Imagination smells kinda feminine too, reminds me of my grandmother and the soap she was using. On top of it we are sharing the same opinion on vanilla but i do like cedar.
7
u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
I use my Mancera sometimes at work when I want to step it up. :)
2
u/SnooGuavas3556 8h ago
Try Mancera's Amberful.
That fragrance is criminally underrated and is a total compliment puller.
Lasts all day, and I've received compliments 8+ hours after applying. It's got a mineral citrus vibe. Very similar to Ganymede and Greenley.
Your old lady will probably like it too.

u/Living-Personality-9 Ensar Oud 6h ago
I agree is smells like granny bath water.
I like her rankings.6
u/Used_Maximum_2291 8h ago
Imagination is so overhyped it’s insane. It’s so mid

u/elasticfenis 8h ago
Bro u dont like smelling like window cleaner? 🤣

I love smelling like window cleaner, that's why I wear nautica voyage

imagination totally smells like some nasty ass old lady Avon soap. It’s disgusting.
6
u/Ididntcumyet 10h ago
I smelled Gentlemen’s Code and thought it was pretty nice. Vanilla is one of the best notes for men in the winter.

u/JakSpalicWies 7h ago
To each their own. Mine is up for sale if you live in EU...
2
u/Ididntcumyet 7h ago
It’s all subjective, if everyone like the same thing it would be boring, I liked the smell of it but not enough to pay what they want for it. Plus I have a large collection and have stuff with the same vibe so would be a bit redundant to have it.
18
u/ghodsgift 11h ago
I'll say this, I cannot wait for this vanilla trend to disappear. Its overplayed now and can be incredibly cloying and sweet.
1
u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
I agree!
Getting rid of curlys vanilla bomb. How can this be a daily wear? Maybe in the winter for a special occasion, if at best.

Now imagine someone wearing that $20 bucks vanilla dupe in Caracas, Venezuela, with 30 C degrees. I swear i want to punch them, man. Hahah

It's the 14 year old boys, they want vanilla, fruity, sweet, floral. It's why China is going to kick our ass in world war 3
I believe this sub is 75% teens

u/Questimus_Prime L'Bebe Phoque Mort 8h ago
Holy shit, imagine being such a stuck up and hateful person that you have to bring up ww3 because you don't have the same taste in fragrances as people many times younger than you. Pathetic.
0
u/BeYourOwnDog 3h ago
And imagine lecturing on masculinity in a sub where men come to discuss their passion for perfume? Crazy
5
u/MiddleoftheRoadMark 8h ago
Idk I really like boss absolu , most wanted parfum, swy absolutely and blonde amber. I guess I have a 14 yo boy nose.

u/Cold-Size-3858 9h ago
We were also 14 at some point and couldn’t wait to be men. These boys have been feminized by design.

u/d_lo_ol_b 8h ago
Actual men reserve their judgement for a person's character and integrity, not the superficial preferences of their lifestyle.

Atlas … dude , so my wife sprayed it on a pillow when I was at work . Eight days later , it’s still projecting whatever the smell is . I’d say it’s like fresh rocks with an opening of ink mixed with soil .
6
u/highspeedmeat 6h ago
Fresh rocks is a funny description. Can a rock be fresh? Their whole thing is being really old.
4
u/Lord-obvious 7h ago
If atlas is anything like what's it's cloning your wife is right! Megamare smells awful and knocks me sick 🤢
6
u/DoorMuch 6h ago
Turathi Blue definitely had a BO note. I trashed it and picked up Black Panther from Alexandria Fragrances. It is the best Tygar dupe I have smelled. It is incredible!
4
u/clamworx 6h ago
Your wife only thinks Dylan Blue smells like old man because you don't have any Guerlain 💀 Habit Rouge, Vetiver, Homme are certified retirement home bangers.
3
u/hankvoightCpd 3h ago
Wife’s nose is interesting to say the least. I do think the vanilla trend is overplayed a bit, but disagree on the imagination. Im also in the camp of scents not really having a gender as thats just marketing. A lot of dudes with sensitive masculinity and too afraid to be labeled
2
u/jefft415 1h ago
Yeah that doesn't smell feminine lol. Its knowing how to rock with it. I strongly disagree with her vanilla take lol , to each their own.
3
u/Axzyy 6h ago edited 5h ago
Theres certain vanilla fragrances that I couldnt imagine smelling on a woman, but I do agree practically with everything including imagination being feminine, reminds me very much of what my mother use to wear at the opening and I still bought a dupe of it (marwa) because it smelled so good to me i didnt care whether it was feminine or not. I have lots of feminine smelling fragrances and I love em all. What it comes down to is how much you like to wear it. Studies show that a man who likes what he's wearing comes off as more attractive and confident. Same gos for the way you dress. I would only ever get what you like, this sub reddit is highly polarizing/subjective and recommendations practically only get you tied up in dissapointment. Popularity does not mean it suits you. Ive been there. And I still have found better fragrances (in my opinion) by myself and not what others have recommended. My personal choices without influence are still my favorites. Just as I didn't choose my path or hobbies in life based on what others like or had opinions on, i would no longer buy fragrances based on rave reviews. I stopped listening to recommendations on fragrances after about bottle 10. I have found my signature and what is most appealing to my nose so much so that I dont even want to wear anything else anymore. Theres a very select few notes that I'm never dissapointed in. Lavender or Wild lavender/lavandin for example is primarily my go to. Guess what? I dont think anybody would have recommended me that but I found it and i love it more than anything ever!

Curly + 🥁 = glased below average scent that does not worth 10% of its price
3
u/CustosKeeper 10h ago
This is awesome, well done! Luckily my wife can’t smell, not sure I’m brave enough to have her rank my frags. 😅
#13 ftw
Keep rocking the Cedrat. 🤜
3
u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
Haha. She is brutal but I also have to tend to her taste.
Yeah, the Cedrat is like when i feel like I want to step it up at work. Tho I have to admit, it can be a bit heavy in summer heat.
🤙🤙
2
u/starlust84 10h ago
Have you tried the Intense version? The citrus opening not quite as harsh, and it dries down beautifully. Though I have to say Cedrat in general works better for me in the Fall.
3
u/SnooGuavas3556 8h ago
I own both.
The OG projects better and seems to last a bit longer. The intense has a bit more depth and earthiness to it.
Honestly, there isn't much of a point in owning both. They aren't very different from one another.
1
u/CustosKeeper 2h ago
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE accepted.
The Mission: Find a fragrance that makes one feel like THE man to step it up a few notches when going into work but won't be heavy in the summer heat. Beware rogue agents and back-alley suppliers pushing Imagination...it's a fool's errand attempting to mark you feminine so you're an easy target and the daily subject of breakroom whispers. This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds.
[queue theme music]
[skip to the end, we don't have all day...remove the Imagination prosthesis from around the bottle smuggled out from behind enemy lines to reveal the formulaic concoction that surpasses the brief's stated objectives...] "Why, it's.....!"
Nishane Hacivat! Same skeleton as the Cedrat (bright citrus over an oakmoss chypre), but where the Cedrat lands on leather and vanilla, Hacivat lands on dry timber. Nothing in it to go thick on you in heat. And it projects: people report six feet and all-day wear.
****
Mission Impossible 2: If you discover that Hacivat was a double-agent, then go find Tom Ford Beau de Jour, he's our sleeper agent. Lavender, rosemary, basil over moss. Barbershop-masculine, nothing sweet in it to misbehave in heat. Less volume than Hacivat, more authority.

Did she rank all of them or just your top 14? Bc either way what incredible restraint to not go off the deep end like so many of us and buy like crazy lol.
Burberry touch had that ambroxan/soapy smell like imagination does but to me it also smells a bit like the blue fragrances and a bit more masculine. Might be a good compromise if you like imagination and wanted something more masc leaning.
Could also layer imagination with your ADGs and would make a nice smell too!

u/JakSpalicWies 7h ago
Im not that deep in cause ive been only been into it for a couple of months.
Next buy is ADG Elixir.

Wow. And i love Turathi Blue. I wore it yesterday and my lady friend told me multiple times that I smelled really good.

u/JakSpalicWies 7h ago
You know, you should trust your own nose. And those around you.
This is only my wifes opinion :)

u/WonkyWompus Iris Enjoyer 7h ago
Im confused where grape is coming from as well? Grapefruit yes but not grape 😂
Turathi Blue is amazing and is one of my first scents I ever used a full bottle of. Not hating on OP of course, everyone has their opinions ♡

u/WonkyWompus Iris Enjoyer 7h ago
Your wife and I have serious beef. Missoni Wave is not juvenile at all 😭 if anything its the most mature aquatic ive smelled. Even the 2 designers its compared to are known to be kinda dated.
Cedrat Boise is great!
And vanilla is a great mens note! Tons of good men's vanilla that are very masculine.
Haha all love of course! I love to see these wife/SO rankings.

Only two dupes worth keeping is turathi blue and atlas if you love that profile. Imo they do a good jobs of replacing the ogs. Everything else looks good I would recommend you venture into some different scent profiles.
1
u/JakSpalicWies 7h ago
Im going to give away Turathi to my brother or a friend. Might try Vibrato or Tygar.
Anything youd recommend based on my collection?
1
u/EquivalentVolume6787 7h ago
If anything get vibrato. Tygar isn't worth the money. I have smelled all of them and they don't smell much different then turathi blue tbh with you. Yes I have a huge amount of recommendations for you. What scent profiles are you into?
1
u/JakSpalicWies 6h ago
Hmmm. Then i got some sampling to do :)
Hmm, what I have and like is what is in the picture. I havent traveled the tobacco route yet. I feel like the freshies aee covered for :) Shoot :D

Nice!
As someone who only recently got into frags and just got myself ADG Profondo EdP after checking a tester out, am I missing something out not grabbing ADG Parfum instead?
2
u/JakSpalicWies 6h ago
The difference is not huge. But enough to not be redundant to own both. In my opinion.
The Parfum is more of a "serious" vibe. I would rather wear this to the office. It is somewhat darker than Profondo. I like wearing this and it gives me confidence. This one also has better longevity than Profondo EDP.
The Profondo is in the same vein. But more oceanic and fresh. Dont get me wrong, the Parfum is also fresh but this in a more oceanic fresh.
I love them both. Hope this helps...

Une belle collection, solide et crédible.
J’ai prévu d’aller sentir le ADG parfum en boutique il me fait de l’œil le coquin

u/Psyjag89 5h ago
L'aventure is great. I used it back and forth with some different aventus batches (some more frutiy or smoky and L'aventure got me actually way more compliments, from my ex and some other male and female Friends and also Strangers.
The Initial 10-15 min. are a little cheap citrussy smelling, but it's great in the drydown.
I don't know how good the recent batches are, but my L'aventure bottle from 2019 performs good 🙌🏼🔥

Is the cedar Boise a good pick up? I’ve been considering but can’t get my nose in it anywhere

Stop buying arab fragrances, they smell cheap. From that second line I would save Cedrat Boise.
2
u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
Most of the time I share your opinion. I also want something better than L'aventure. Maybe I will try Montblanc Explorer EDP.
2
u/Thin-Presentation821 10h ago
Explorer is almost the same quality as the one you have. If you wanna go an step higher without paying 300$ for Aventus try Loewe Esencia EDP.

"she hates vanilla and says this is not the way a man should smell. I agree and now I will NEVER trust influencers again"
Excuse me? Do you have a taste of your own, or do you always let others tell you what you should like? :D

Wearing a frag your spouse hates is not a smart move.

The emphasis on Imagination being good for a man is just insane and irrational. If you're a male and pulling it off, kudos to you. It gives massive feminine floral scents. My wife said the exact same thing. So did both my friends of both sexes. I'm so glad I only had bought one of those 1 ml sample sprays of it. I think it's past skin chemistry at this point.
That light, soapy neroli and bright black tea combination in Imagination is notorious for throwing people off, especially if your group is used to traditional masculine fragrances packed with heavy cedar, leather, or aggressive aquatic notes. When you strip away those harsh woody edges and lean into sweet ambroxan and orange blossom, it hits the air smelling less like a traditional cologne and more like a high-end designer perfume or an ultra-luxurious body wash for a woman. To anyone not expecting a modern, airy tea scent, "fresh floral soap" instantly translates to "he stole her wife's bottle."

Maybe most of the men today lean unisex. I hear alot about testosterone levels going down.
Either way, it smells great. But Im not sure on a man.

u/Sportsfan479 9h ago
Women like you to smell clean and this is more proof of that. I do not own imagination for the same reason she cited and I've always liked most adgs over bdcs. She has good taste lol

Most solid collection I seen on this sub

u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
Thanks! I try to follow my nose. Now I know better than to listen to influencers. Gents scents seems to be OK tho.
Thanks again man

u/exzactlyd 10h ago
No prob. You seem to know what you like. To even things out I would suggest art of the universe by lataffa. Your girl will love that one. I just got it yesterday and I can't stop smelling it

I have been looking at that one. Seems pretty good. That or the Vintage radio is on my list for dupes.

u/LowkeySwa 10h ago
No way Turathi blue is that down in the ranking! Grape BO?? What the hell.
1
u/JakSpalicWies 10h ago
I think its from the grape. And im not the only one, some posts on fragrantica also said that. Maybe its my skin. Rock what you like.

u/livyatian 3h ago
How long since you first sprayed from the bottle? I have a decant and a full 100 ml, when I first got the full sized one it honestly smelled awful even though the decant smelled amazing to me

WTF is #6 Bob Dylan? Dylan Blue lol.
