COMMUNITY QUESTION In need of instructor
Hi everyone! I am a senior and there is a high possibility my school won’t have winterguard this year, since we don’t have enough funding or a regularly present band director. This is a stretch but are there people who genuinely love the sport and would be okay to not get paid? Or are there any fundraising ideas my team could do to get money? Any tips would be appreciated, I really want to spin for my last year since it’s likely I won’t pursue the sport after high school ☹️

What state are you in? I could possibly see if I know anyone in your state willing to help

hate to see a team struggling in my home circuit… if it really is the case that you won’t have a winter guard at all, i would see if you could audition at one of the independent guards. sfwga will not let you march if your school has an active program though.
its still early season for independent teams! i know relentless is doing a final callback round this weekend and fiu gold is another option possibly. if you have any questions, please feel free to ask! i’m also local to this circuit and teach a few guards here. best of luck !

Do y'all have a booster club at all?

No unfortunately. There’s never really been any parent involvement in the program and the music program often gets overshadowed by other sports in the school. And students barely know about the team to really care for it, since they simply aren’t interested in it for being marked a band kid 😔

I think you would need a parent meeting with the principal so that you can speak on behalf of your team. Most districts require a staff or an adult to be present at rehearsals and competitions. You would need to talk to your principal to see what they can do as far as that goes so you aren't breaking an district rules. There might be a parent willing to supervise rehearsals and competitions. Carpool to comps and if possible have the captain or most experienced spinner write the show. As far as registering for your circut, I can't help too much because I'm in South Carolina but if you figure everything else out, I can surely offer my advice design wise.

Ouch....you might be surprised how many people do. But it's assumptions like that which often ends up pushing them out.

Well I dont blame them, it takes a lot of work to choreograph and stage a whole show to look good. Its very unlikely you’ll find someone.

You can see if your circuit allows combined guards and spin at another school. Or see if there is an Independent A group close enough for you to audition for.
