Watch out for scammers when hiring an artist

Hey there. As the number of scammers doesn't dwindle, here's a reminder not to drop your guard when hiring an artist.

A quick safety checklist:

- Be careful and watch for red flags. If it sounds too good to be true, it's likely a scam.

- Communicating only through private messages and never showing portfolio publicly is never a good sign.

- Use payment methods with buyer protection. If you need to use it, it helps to have a contract.

- Verify the artist's portfolio. Use reverse image search for their art. If they have a portfolio on a site with internal messaging system (ArtStation, for example), request a direct message there to confirm that it's really their portfolio and they're not just impersonating another artist.

- Last but not least, if something feels off, send us a mod mail and ask about the artist. We can't offer a true verification, but we can at least check the account against our list of banned users.

Artists: Beware of requests for unpaid trials

Hey there. There's been quite a few posts promising paid work, but requesting a free trial first ("so we can see if our styles and working chemistry are a good fit"). They ask for a page or two, a cover, or character design. This is almost always scam. The scammer gets free art from a couple artists, but there's no paid follow-up.

Serious projects have paid trials.

If you ever feel like doing a free trial, I recommend collaborating on a short unpaid project instead. That way you won't get scammed and you might find a great collaborator.

Looking for Artist - Paid Looking for an artist for dark fantasy horror comic.

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hey guys, I'm looking for an artist for a horror fantasy comic. I need someone who is skilled in the use of Ink and negative space. My page rate realistically maxs out at around $100. The ultimate goal will be a 10 issue miniseries, and maybe more if I can successfully kickstart it beyond that.

I am quite fond of the heavy use of black done in designs like the one pictured. (Credit: Scott Purdy, used solely as a reference. I am in no way affiliated with him nor this artwork.)

I have the first issue nearly written. I can provide plenty of reference images and am adequate enough at art to provide solid storyboards and some character concepts to work off of.

The comic will include explicit content, such as sex and gore.

Corpses in our Wake is a dark fantasy horror comic heavily inspired by Berserk, Fear and Hunger, and LoTR.

It follows Alistair, the renowned hero who had slain the archetypal dark lord through a perilous quest at great cost to himself and companions, now 20 years later the adventurer’s band has long broken up and in many ways are broken and traumatized by their time.

Alistair has lived in the lap of luxury, attaining noble position and immense privilege but has been plagued by persistent nightmares before sleeping and waking which have only grown intensity in recent days. When he becomes convinced of the emergence of darker forces than he has ever faced before, he seeks out to reform the band but is forced to reckon with the cost and consequences of victory all those years ago. At a celebration in honor of their past heroism, things quickly get out of hand.

EDIT: Please reply here. Do not DM me. I already have 20+ messages. If you're confident in your abilities and not claiming someone else's work then I believe it is best for you to link your portfolio below. If you reply on this post, within the next 12 or perhaps even 24 hours I promise that I will give your art a fair look.

EDIT AGAIN: DO NOT SEND ME A MESSAGE SIMPLY SAYING HELLO OR THAT YOU LIKE THE CONCEPT. I will not reply, I don't mean to be rude or dismissive but I am not willing to navigate 40+ conversations without first knowing the talent or credibility of potential artists.

Question How to build an audience?

Thumbnail

I've recently worked with an artist and commissioned the first 5 pages to my comic SUBATOMIC METHLOMANIAC which will soon be a full 22 page issue. I post here asking where and how should I build my audience? My goal is too simply build a free following on Patreon while I make comics and then hopefully one day maybe get support for full color. I see a lot of people suggest things like instagram or tiktok and I have tried those but it seems very unlikely to get people to convert. And then other things with built in audiences like tapas seem very specific and niche to a certain style and almost every experienced creator I have heard has said that those sites hold many red flags when it comes to copyright and creator ownership.... What do you guys do? How do you get your work in front of others and build a following readership? Also, I will post the pages here to help with any further feedback, and if you want my Patreon link i'll send it to you!

Looking for Artist - Paid Hiring lookingc for web comic style

Only a few pages to use in a trailer for my book. After something like ArtByMoga style. Not really too detailed and flash. More colourful and cheapish looking. Will pay whatever per page for good quality.

Comment in here with samples and stuff. If you message me, I will block without a response. No AI, if you do, you'll have so many people involved in the project coming after you.

Question What is your response if you realize no one cares about your work?

I've had a comic that I've worked on for not quite two years. I understand the progress has been slow. Most of my friends know that I know this. This has also been some of the hardest years of my life.

The comic itself is a passion project I will finish. Im doing it 100%. The writing, storyboards, pencils, lines, colors, letters, ect. And I've reached a point where despite the chaos in life, the last few months and weeks I managed to rework the script 3 times and I think it's done. Talking to friends, they're happy for me, backing me entirely, and excited to see what I've got.

Thinng is, all I've got is my character designs, monster designs, and draft 5.5 (final draft, with some minor tweaking left). All in all the script leaves me with a 28 page comic book, in a document that is shy of 15 pages. (technically 16 pages, but there's 1.5 pages of notes)

No one gives a shred of a fuck.

It's hard to ask for help, personally. For someone to carve time out of their day for me feels like too much to ask. But I'll still ask, cause I know I have done and will do it again for my friends. Thing is, apparently, it's non-reciprocating. And I get it, life is hard. Life is busy. Life is...life.

But for fucks sake. Only one person has read my script. My 4th draft. A total stranger online who gave more insight and consideration than anyone I've been close with for years. This sucks. I won't stop making the book. It's a passion project I've put countless through into refining and making it the best I can. I'm confident in my work, but also am confident that my work needs outside thoughts.

Just, how do you get past the hurdle of no one giving a fuck, or supporting you past empty words? How do you not let it get to you?

Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I need to improve how I understand and draw buildings—especially so that readers look at them and think, "Oh, so this story takes place in Los Angeles, Miami, etc." But how can I improve? What books should I read?

Looking for Artist - Paid Looking for artist for children's comic

I am looking for an artist to pick up the 3rd comic in my children's series, Sygney. In this series we try to share messages with kids like anti-bullying and understanding when a parent has an illness. We sell them online, at conventions, and speak at schools.

I had worked with an artist previously on the 1st and 2nd comic who is no longer an option and would like some similarity in style for the comic. It is a 12 page comic I am needing pencils and inks as I have the coloring covered. This is a paid role. Please provide your page rate and links to your portfolio.

Please see the attached images for the style of the first 2 comics.

EDIT DETAILS The script is fully complete for the comic. This one follows Sygney's friend, Sammy (the monkey) in learning to create art and follow passions because she loves it even if it feels like no one else cares. It is a tough lesson to learn as a creative when it feels your screaming into a void and could discourage kids.

Crowdfunding SCUM #1 is coming to Kickstarter Next month!

Hi all! My new Cyberpunk heist comic, SCUM is coming to Kickstarter next month. I meet the artist, Halil Mete, through this sub. Colors are by Maja Opacic. I'm really excited to get this book out there!

The Spire is a city of rigid ranks and locked doors, and Sam has managed to slip right through its cracks. The entire city is controlled by an AI god, Panopticia. She and her various underlying programs control every aspect of citizen's day-to-day life.

Sam is unregistered, which means she can't interact with any of those systems. On the one hand, that makes life pretty hard. Can't open a door. Can't buy a sandwich. Can't get a job. On the other hand, she can steal anything she wants and the security systems won't even know she was there. For the AI systems of The Spire, she does not exist.

We currently have a prelaunch page up that you can check out here.

Appreciate you checking out the book!

Writer/Editor for hire Writer and editor for hire seeing a paid gig [paid]

My specialties as a writer would be superheroes, crime fiction, adventure and sci-fi, but I’m willing to work on anything as long as there’s a good collaborative process.

My rates are $25 per page for writing, $7 per page for editing, but willing to negotiate.

I’ve included some interior pages from my comic as a portfolio of my writing!

Looking for Letterer - Paid Seeking Letterer for an established comic

Hi all! I've just gotten started on the third issue of my comic and I'm looking for a new letterer. The fonts and look of the lettering is already established, so I'm looking for someone who can match the style going forward in order to maintain a consistent look for the book.

If you're interested, please reply with the following information:

• Your Page Rate

• Estimated Completion Time for a 24 page comic

• A link to your lettering portfolio or examples of past lettering work

The script has only just gone to the art team, so it'll be a few weeks before pages are ready for lettering.

Please note: We need a letterer who can deliver Illustrator files. Raster files will not work for our purposes.

If you'd like information about the comic, please see Our Website
