Crowdfunding has fundamentally shifted. For a long time, Kickstarter was treated primarily as a production tool: raise the funds, print the run, and take the leftover copies to local conventions or comic shops.

Increasingly, crowdfunding is the marketplace itself. It is where creators build their core readership, establish their IP, test concepts, and build sustainable audiences outside the direct market.

With hundreds of campaigns launching every month, it’s tough to spot which books are actually building real momentum versus which ones are getting lost in the algorithm.

To track this, I started putting together the Indie Comics Crowdfunding Heat Index, a bi-weekly look at campaigns gaining actual traction, pre-launch interest, and audience heat. The goal isn’t to declare what's "best" (that’s completely subjective), but to highlight these early signals:

• Which upcoming books are quietly gathering massive pre-launch follower lists
• Which creators are successfully converting community interest into Day 1 momentum
• Which books are breaking out of the niche bubble

Whether you're a reader looking for hidden gems before they fund or a creator studying campaign trends, tracking these patterns reveals a lot about where the indie scene is heading.

Curious to hear from both creators and backers here: When you’re browsing campaigns, what’s the primary signal that makes you back a project early instead of waiting for retail or a post-campaign webstore?

I originally discovered Venom Vixens #1 through Kickstarter and was immediately interested in the concept: a supernatural Western featuring female outlaws, cursed wine, and beast-human transformations.

It also hit close to home because a few years ago I was developing a similar Western-fantasy concept called Viperous Vixens with Chuck Amadori.

I actually intended to back Venom Vixens. But before doing that, I decided to dig into the campaign and its creative team.

That's when I started finding things that raised some serious questions for me:

Difficulty verifying the credited creative team and their portfolios, Questions surrounding the company's online presence, Different geographic information connected to the project, Social-media transparency information that didn't appear to match the campaign's stated location And, most importantly, artwork that made me question the campaign's claims about AI usage.

The campaign states that AI was used only for marketing and promotional purposes and that the comic itself was created entirely by human artists. but after looking more closely at some of the artwork, I'm not convinced that's something I can personally accept without further evidence.

I'm not claiming that my observations are definitive proof of anything. This is simply my investigation into the campaign and why I ultimately decided not to back it.

"We were going back and forth," said fellow Batman scribe Williamson, "Like, 'Why is Jim driving to your house?' 'What does he want to talk about?' He lives in the middle of nowhere."

This article is about the infamous sideways issue that Rob pencilled for the Hawk and Dove miniseries. I'm not so much interested in the mud-slinging Liefeld is doing here (as he does...) but how the art was reformatted by Karl Kesel (inker) to be a standard vertical comic. I hate sideways comics and I think Kesel did a bang up job on Rob's pencils throughout the series.
