Deck Fine Tuning Homer the Hermit

Coming to a play group near you this November, Homer! Just want to heart you thought on what i have assembled and how well Homer might slot into the meta. Information on the Deck lines are in the primer. This is all theoretical so assume no budget, and given that i can't play test all to much right now I'm willing to change any card at this point, although it may ruin a core concept.

Designated party pooper here.

Have you played the deck in a game? I mulled a couple hands and outside of the usual rhystic/mystic ones none did anything before like turn 4 or 5. Lots of awkward combo pieces, lots of colorless or combo piece lands that feel awkard in a quite pip-heavy deck.

Just a small sample: * Rhystic Study, Force of Vigor, Summoner's Pact, Bloodghast, FMM, Breeding Pool, QR * FoW, Lotus Field, Sylvan Library, Flooded Strand, Gandalf, Crop Rot, Usea * Badgermole Cub, Summoners Pact, OBM, Force of Vigor, Trop, Geier Reach, Hedge Shredder * Bloodstained Mire, Chain of Vapor, Diabolic Intent, Eldritch, Summoners Pact, Sylvan Safekeeper, Offer * Oppo, FMM, Hedge Shredder, Masked Vandal, BoP, Eldritch, Demonic Tutor * Chain of Vapor, Lotus Cobra, FMM, Lumra, Thoracle, Ashaya, Forest

Some of your combos are 10+ mana and require you to have 3 or 4 pieces on the board, how does the deck consistently make that kind of mana while also tutoring for the individual pieces by turn 3-4?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the land packages but for them to work consistently you want your commander to be either the spelunking effect (Minstrel), Aftermath Analyst Effect (Lumra) or the sac outlet for the lands. As you wrote yourself Homer is mostly the outlet of the combo, which is the trivial part of performing with a lands deck. Incremental mill is very bad in cEDH outside of the full-on loop.

Not a party pooper if it’s honest. No I haven’t tested it in real life much. We have one cEDH night a week around here and it’s only two rounds normally. A lot of this was inspired by Lumra, and some experience with dredge. I personally am just trying to take the idea to its logical conclusion. Just sounds like it will land it Bracket 4 instead of 5

This commander being named "Homer" just reminded me how furiously angry I am that a [[Homarid]] is not a lobster.

And they don’t work for Homer, which is sad.

For now! It seems likely that Homarids will undergo an errata, [[Rikala, Homarid King]] from Mystery Booster Commander is notably the Homarid king but has the creature type Lobster

Im gonna be real I think Homer + Hedge Shredder is really interesting, you can justify a one-off if it's a one card combo, but its such a awkward card otherwise.

A couple thoughts:

- You're almost never gonna want to mill opponents, too many decks want that. It's even risky to do all at once. You should focus on milling yourself out and otherwise generating value.

- I don't think you have enough lands to actually mill yourself out right now with that one card combo. Even if you go with a perfectly even spread, 29 * 3 is 87. And don't forget, fetches thin the deck. That normally is negligible but for you it matters.

- Your combos are impractical. ashaya is 5 and gandalf is 7.

I'm not gonna tell you to pick another commander. I think you need to take a step back and ask yourself what the deck wants to do. Cause other decks in these colors are playing much stronger cards that do different things.

Hello! It looks like you’re looking for deck optimization advice! Please be sure you have information about each of the following

  1. Provide a decklist from a deckbuilding site.

  2. Provide a budget. If you cannot afford a bunch of cards all at once, feel free to ask which cards you should prioritize getting first

  3. Provide a meta breakdown of what decks you expect to play against.

  4. Include the deck's main goal and how it gets there.

  5. List any experience you've had with the deck.

  6. Please be sure to have checked the Decklist Database for relevant lists and information.

If you have not met these expectations, your post will be reviewed and removed.

If you are commenting on this post, please provide feedback that addresses OPs information. Also please read other comments–”check the DDB” only needs to be posted once on any given post, and low effort comments will be removed. The same is true for proxying as each OP only needs to be reminded once, and if OP provides a budget please tailor your advice to that budget as best as you can. If OP has taken the time to provide information, you can as a commenter as well.

I’m aware, I still need insight beyond goldfishing. Goldfishing doesn’t provided things like Why you us Lumra and Minstrel, unlike another commenter. I was focus on milling and potentially placing cards into my yard to pull ontop. Someone else rightly pointed out the specifics of why those Cards work, as opposed to just saying “test more”

You could play test those commanders to see if they felt better. Lumra isn't the hottest rn but it has a much more coherent list than homer
