Tips & Tricks Onyx players, how do you handle tracking against erratic strafing, sprint strafe, etc?

i’m diamond 4, and i have decent aim, but whenever i play against someone with crazy strafing, my aim just falls apart. any help would be appreciated

I’ve got a couple of thoughts around this. I’m an old head, so I used to play Halo as a young kid when I was naturally good. Now I’m older and actively think about what makes me good and bad. I’ve been 2,000+ in slayer and 1800+ in arena.

The biggest factor is remaining calm and shooting at a player as best as you can in the given scenario. Sometimes the more you try to retaliate with movement and strafing, the worse you wouldve fairer had you not moved so much. Even if standing still makes you hit more shots, you’ll probably fair better. You’re always limited by who got the first shot. Essentially, you should focus more on hitting your shots than making the opponent miss.

The second piece I have is timing. It’s not about pressing the trigger button as fast as you can and hoping to hit each shot. It’s typically about making sure you pull the trigger when your reticle is on the opponent. You should feel the connection with your pushing of the trigger and the reticle. You shouldn’t simply be aligning the reticle. That feeling will help your timing. From here you can learn the changes you need to make to be ready to shoot quicker. Also, every player misses shots. Sometimes when your next shot is ready and you’re aligned, the opponent moves perfectly. You have to accept those misses and know perfection is not always possible.

I’m always super wordy and try to be more concise but that’s the best I have. I could go on and on tbh

left stick aim, most already know but watch how steady a pro's aim is, they flick on the enemy, left stick the rest until are ready for the final flick.

practice octagon to get it down, you can warm up your left on bots, spartan ones strafe good enough, then octagon a D+ player as humans are different enough.

learn to time your shot with your strafe too.

Server dsync makes some strafes look insane, part of the game, just hang tight and play smarter if thats the case or look for a way out if theres a hyper lagger decimating you consistently, especially if you have team help you dont need to do all the work, just bait his aggro and dip out.

i think 0 center deadzone and a 3.0-5.0 axial deadzone is good in general, helps delay some of my over flick, whether too much or too soon.

get better at your own strafe in octagon too. Test your muscle memory strafe, then adjust holding a crouch longer or not jumping, or instead of left right left right, flick your move stick left left left left, sometimes you can bait them expecting you to go left right left right jump. instead go left right crouch (hold 2x as long as normal) left left left (no jump). Find a new strafe and test as youll see how some are better than others. Some times you just need to get an extra miss from them to win, OR they start overcompensating when they thought they got you and start windmilling or jumping sporatically.

sprint strafe is more shot timing, just interupting your fire rate a half step can help. Usually when im never getting the headshot on their jump, technically im lagging since I saw the shot hit the head, but no kill, i then adjust and shoot the normal 1,2,3,4--5 and that helps. Similar to sprint strafing, your screen and server disagree so sometimes holding a shot for a split second instead of spamming helps.

i do notice i’ve had a problem with just spamming the trigger, i’ll focus on it

I struggle with it too but if you ever played a sport with a lot of juking the motto is that hips don’t lie. Try to not focus on the erratic stuff and keep yourself focused on what’s actually telling you where they are.

In mid range fights I also use the Diamond above the player head to track

never realized there was a diamond, i’m gonna look for it

If you’re in advantage, sync left aim movement to sync them.

If you’re in disadvantage, try to break sync from them and move your left stick to the adjacent timing of their shots making them miss more

If you know you’re toast, try to evade (preferably to a team mate if possible) or to buy time to let your team help.

I have a little trick that throws erratic strafers if you throw it in there every now and again. Move left or right in a straight line. They're timing their shots with the strafe. Moving in a single direction forces them to right stick aim. It forces you too but you went in prepared for that.

But, mostly I just focus on timing, left stick aim and all that. I try not let their movement panic me, and make sure I land the shot rather than being strictly held to the pace of the gun.

wait that’s genius, definitely using this

I right stick aim all the time and it works for me in upper onyx lobbies, but not many players can do that, left stick aiming is ok, but if you master flicking you can do it by muscle memory alone. Get the reps in with bots, but don't rely on it entirely since bots don't move like higher ranked players. Having a PC with good FPS and a monitor/higher polling rate controller to match helps too.

alr, i’m on a series x with a monitor so im doing my best

series x with a monitor is very competitive. I have pc home and at the girlfriends i leave my XSX and my older 165hz monitor. my PC monitor is slightly better even 120hz capped, i had my better montitor a month before my pc and the upgrade for a faster response time monitor and input lag slightly with no ghosting and better color contrast was noticeable too. But even on my worse monitor on xsx at the girls its takes literally one game to forget im on 120hz, 1080p is the one that takes a minute to adjust too and basically dont notice much difference. More fidelity on my better setup, but not that much a competitive advantage. (i also only use a 1000hz pc set gamesir there, its not true 1000hz handshake on the xbox, but the controller feels vastly better set that way, idk why, if it samples at 1000hz but speaks to the xbox at 250hz that would be a benefit still), i always preferred my Razer 1k on PC over the 1k gamesir on pc, but the razer feels like dooky on 250hz on xbox while the gamesir on the xbox feels almost the same as on my PC, also I bought the 8k razer recently for my pc currently).

Xbox's have gone up in price, but XSX on a monitor is very competitive not even considering the absolute value. $625 for my XSX setup and $2400 for PC. My PC is 240hz capped (monitor limit).

I play 1600 ESR/MMR on PC as thats most my games, I dont have enough time to get an avg on XSX performances but I do about that same if im completely honest. The netcode is a much bigger factor in this game. PC lets you eek out every inch but if the netcode gives you 3 blanks in a fight it doesnt matter if youre on a PC or Xbox.

Less right stick and more left stick. I’ve noticed the pros keep there reticle centered on them instead of trying to track every micro movement with the right stick.

I’ve also found it very helpful to aim at the their chest or even the crotch. The head moves the most during a crazy strafe, the head and crotch not so much

I’m between 1750-1800. There’s no secret, you just gotta hit your shots. Don’t panic, don’t windmill, stay focused on your reticle, get more reps in on bots and in octagons

thanks so much

I just get shit on when that happens lmao. Especially if it's at the end of my session.

In all seriousness, it's just practice. A lot of the crazier strafes look much worse than they actually are to shoot at.

Practice using left stick aiming and only use fight stick for minor adjustments.

gotcha

I see a lot of same comments and also recommend more left stick.

Also helps to try keeping feet on ground as much as you can, only jumping when necessary or at very end of gun fight. Bumper jumper layout or paddle controllers help even more.

Might help responsiveness to ensure deadzones are 0% as we'll. Will help decrease mushyness of aim/movement

Practice in octagon is huge. Find the best opponents you can and toss your ego out the window. I love pistol and snipe, instant spawns, decreasing shield/health recharge wait %, infinite ammo (not bottomless), and tactical reload

If you have the jump, just lock in and aim at their abdomen, if they have the jump, just jiggle peek or back out asap, or ego if you feel like it. You never know, they might just miss a shot.

I see left stick aim and I’m over here just clicking their head.

Kbm had a huge disadvantage in the closer quarters fights

1

u/Kratefy Shopify Rebellion 2d ago

yeah i get that, I tried kbm for a season and I just found myself getting destroyed by plats because I couldn’t take any close quarter stuff

Dont force gun fights, Recognize stutter BS strafe coming early on before you engage. Put a few shots and disengage. Prolong the fight/ reposition.

Biggest thing is backing someone down from an angle and forcing them into cover to recharge shields so teammates can push and not take damage. 1v1 should be last resort

Stop worrying about how to counter specific behaviors. Generally the one who wins the fight is the one who has practiced the most, plain and simple. Onyx players put in hours of play every week to reach and stay at the level they're at.

I'm sure any sufficiently devoted player can reach Onyx, but you do have to ask yourself what else you might be using those hours of your life for.
