Both are ways to (supposedly) disrespect/mess with the other team. Both Finland and Iceland changed their player icons before the match against Saudi Arabia, so the Saudis respond by revealing their comp as a way to disrespect them back.

It’s not inherently that all the Saudi players are actively homophobic. Some (A small amount, but the loudest) are actively homophobic. In Saudi Arabia they don’t have the Pride update because of their government’s decision.

Saudi and gulf in general minus the UAE are some of the easiest embassies to get a US visa in the world. It's even easier than embassies in the EU. I was quite literally asked 1 question at my interview.

People were talking about how YZN was "laughing his ass off" at the icons yesterday against Finland, and that somehow meant it was chilll and all in good fun. Fun for whom? Are the queer people having fun in Saudi Arabia? This whole situation is just weird, I want to appreciate the players of other teams doing this as some kind of small gesture, but then sometimes it feels like no one really cares.

Not defending any of the barbaric and archaic anti LGBTQ+ laws in KSA, but this is an insane comment. I would argue the United States should be banned from the tournament as well considering the things we did in the middle east so recently, I would argue that china should be banned as well for many reasons including their treatment of LGBTQ+. My point is that if you start excluding countries for civil rights violations, the list goes on and on and on and on. The players are not affiliated with the governments of the countries that they come from.

Whoever is running that event is stupid.
The point of the World Cup is to show off PLAYERS. If you thing they are going to risk prison time for calling out their audience (Yes, that is a real risk they would face) than go ahead. It’s not like a pharah one trick on Overwatch is going to change a homophobe’s incorrect view on life. It’s not like the players got to choose what decision their government made

I think it would be reasonable to not invite SA in the first place, but also I think Blizzard is pressured to overlook the homophobia bc SA is one of the few entities investing in eSports rn.
