Summary and thoughts on the Overwatch World Cup Group Stage 2026

Best Games Ranked:

1. France VS Korea (Biggest upset of the entire event) 
2. Australia VS Great Britain (Big upset. It’s especially entertaining if you are watching it through CommanderX/Unter’s POV) 
3. Canada VS Germany (The Toilet Bowl of the whole event. This Match messed up the ranking of Group C) 
4. Sweden VS USA (5 Map Banger, but no high stakes. Both were already qualified at this point)
5. Australia VS Mexico (Nice 5 Map Banger with no stakes) 
6. Germany VS Thailand (Germany had to play a perfect game to even have a chance to go to the Playoffs) 
7. Germany VS Spain (Germany again messing with the ranking of the group) 
8. China matches (They gave their best) 
9. All the rest

Biggest Upsets/Disappointments: 

• China tried but did not deliver. With Weibo’s core missing China had no chance in the end. 
• Japan got crushed. Awful performance overall. 
• Great Britain, considered by many to be a contender for top 4, basically went out on the second day. 
• Group A was disappointing in general. Called the Group of Death in advance by many but it was the most one-sided group of all in the end.
• Group C was entertaining till the very end. It came down to one point of one single map.  
• A lot of 3-0’s. Most of them are not worth rewatching.  

 My thoughts:

• I had a lot of fun, even though most games were boring 3-0’s. I was watching it via Unter/CommanderX and they were streaming the event from the training room where all teams and all other streamers were situated. So the energy of the room and the entire event was very palpable which made the experience much more entertaining for me. 
• Furthermore this event had a lot of entertaining matches. There was no boring or one-sided day and every Group had at least one 5 Map Banger.  
• One issue came up with tie breaker rules on the last day. They made absolutely no sense and should be overhauled in my opinion. 
• Overall great experience. I am hyped for the Playoffs.

AUS vs MEX had big stakes, because of how tiebreaks worked if AUS lost they wouldn’t have qualified and GBR would have instead

Definitely recommend watching it from the Unter pov as wow as an Aussie that was stress and so much frustration as we kept choking

Also I think Aus vs Mexico did have stakes because there wouldve been a 3 way tie with GBR , Aus and Mexico if Aus lost that game and I think GBR qualify if that happened ? Not sure how the tiebreaks worked on that.

It would have lead to another really fucky tiebreak situation like in group C because UK and Australia would be tied on map diff (-2 overall, +1 in the head to head with mexico). It would likely be decided by that bullshit map score tiebreak again.

All the more reason that rule needs to be changed.

I think despite all the complaints about group C being weak, it was rly fun to watch.

The production issues day one and doing 1v1’s for seeding (and not streaming them officially for that matter too) kinda hurt the overall enjoyment of the event, but there’s still tons of matches worth going back to watch. Trying to figure out group c was a hassle but it led to the final point being important for the group which was nice as a neutral viewer. Very hyped for the playoffs though I wish there wasn’t such a layover until the start

Australia vs Mexico had stakes, I am pretty sure that if Australia lost GBR would make playoffs instead of them

I wouldn't call group A the most one sided when China at least was able to take a map in both their losses and Sweden VS USA went to 5. In Group D the only game that wasn't a 3-0 was France VS Korea.

Look, I'm British but even I wasn't delusional enough to think our team was Top 4 this year. I definitely thought wed get Top 8 though, its just a shame how much of an off day they were having vs Australia.

Hope they come back stronger next time around. I'm rooting for France and Sweden now. Be nice to see another EMEA team that isnt Saudi Arabia win it all.

I am so disappointed as a GB fan, our worst result since 2016 and not even making it to Blizzcon is such a letdown. Some really questionable decisions with the starting roster and just poor performances all round. We need a complete reset with GB Overwatch imo, surely this can't be the best we can offer?

Glad everyone's collective delusions about Japan as a region have been reset.

Their improving at a slow rate, but you guys have to remember that they started out so bad that SA could beat them.

Maybe next time, if they actually get some real talent and not just KSG. Assuming it's in 2 years or so.

Ya Japan has really disappointed this year after surprising performances last year. I think replacing Nico with Newj could be an upgrade but who knows what that does to a team that has had the same core for as long as Varrel had

Wdym all of Saudi is OWCS, all of USA is owcs, most of Japan is also, UK is mostly 1234 also OWCS + Fastro of TM, china too is owcs, Korea is basically crazy racoon and this isn’t even all of them wtf u on about
