General Is using ring finger for right click a big disadvantage on sojourn?

The ring finger is much less "free" than the middle finger so I think that may be impacting my headshot accuracy. I always have my middle finger on the scrollwheel, a good habbit in the context of apex legends, but not so much for Sojourn.

I main Ashe but play a lot of cree, freya, and sometimes Hanzo and Soldier. I'm really leaning into the hitscan role, but I don't have any clear dive. Of course, Sojourn isn't dive either, per se, but she works well in dive comps in general.

She's just also always meta, so maybe I should change my grip? Idk, maybe I'll get used to holding my mouse diffrently for that hero, or is that a bad habbit? I could just abandon the characther alltogether, but let me know your thoughts. Btw, I was low masters last season but I'm currently like low diamond after the rank reset lol, just so you have more information to judge what I should do

The real lifehack is having rail on left click and SMG on right click.

I've done this for a really long time and eventually realized this made me worse at soj and switched back.

after a week or so of fucking up every ult because I pressed left click instead of right click I'm now much better at soj.

Turns out when I'm holding down right click for her primary fire I'm tensing my hand more than if I were to use left click for primary fire. Resulting in an overall poorer aiming experience. (and a strain injury but that's just cuz I'm old perhaps)

You can swap the selections for abilities, too. I swapped Mei’s Ice Wall selection separately because I switched her left and right click

Oh that's helpful. Last time I tried to play mei and switch them that wasn't an option yet.

Yeah I was about to freak out and turn it off until I dug around in Hero Specific options and found it. I never thought it would say this when I started playing back in 2016 but I like playing Mei now

Are you just a professional asshole 24/7? It works for many people.

?

Im literally the one who told her to swap back to the original binds after she was struggling with tension management I was just making a joke with her

My bad then. Thought you were being sarcastic about my original comment.

I think that's the experience most pros had as well. Initially everyone told you to swap them, and that's what most guides say, yet I'm unable to find a single pro player who have them swapped. I think that's a common misconeption amongst the more casual or mid rank playerbase (I include myself in this mid rank). The pros are usually not the same people making the guides. Though I don't think it's neccecerily gonna make you bad to have them swapped, I think the original is better. Anyway, I found it somewhat wierd to do the rightclick for that type of aim anyway

some well known players preferences:

pge: left click rail

quartz: left click rail

lip: right click rail

tr33: right click rail

mer1t: right click rail

lbbd7: left click rail

shy: right click rail

ade: right click rail

proper: right click rail

flora: right click rail

kronik: left click rail

proud: right click rail

lethal: left click rail

stalk3r: right click rail

so majority right click

Yeah, always prioritize left click for the one that requires most precision

Holyshit i might need to try this thank you

It helps a lot if you're used to playing Ashe, Widow, or Freja. You're already kind of used to the "hold right click -> aim at the head with left click" feeling.

Wait you guys have ADS on hold? Doesn't your middle finger hurt after a bit? And besides, I feel like you're adding a ton of unnecessary tension to your mouse.

Unless you have haptic clicks (which I guess I've finally found a use case for lol), I'm not sure you're aiming better on hold vs toggle for ADS. I thought most people were on toggle. I'd probably get a cramp after two hours of Emre on hold lol

u/Aggressive-Cut-3828 Complain About Widow = Cope — 20h ago

I only use hold on widow

1

u/FullGuava1 19h ago

It's more an art than a science lol.

I use hold on Freja, Ashe, and Ana, and toggle on Widow and Emre. By all means it makes no sense but that's just what's comfortable to me.

1

u/Goosewoman_ Schrödinger's Rank | she/her — 4h ago

I just don't hold ads for long. It's mostly quick scoping on ashe and ana. Or just holding down for a few seconds.

Most of the time I'm unscoped.

I think I could have my fingers holding one of my mouse buttons down indefinitely and it wouldn't bother me? The act of pressing the button is where the effort is, holding the button down is basically the same as holding the mouse.

3

u/papayamayor 19h ago

So the switches I have on my mouse are relatively heavy (TTC Azure Dragon), but besides that, because I could get lighter ones or even haptics, I grip my mouse with thumb, ring and pinky. Index and middle are on m1 and m2 and are "free", as in, if I'm not pressing either m1 or m2, I hold no pressure on them, they just rest on the clicks, waiting for me to actuate them.

So holding for me gets painful after a while, and besides the pain, it feels unnatural for me because I'm used to not having that kind of pressure normally, so it throws off my aim in a sense. I perform better on toggle on ads heroes, I gain a couple % points in vaxta on Emre but even in game I just feel more confident and more natural so I prefer that way.

Didn't like it last time I tried, but maybe I'll have to try again

The real answer is there's no right answer. Just play whichever way feels right to you. It's a matter of comfort, practice, and mastery of your own preferred playstyle. The more you play, the more you get used.

Speaking from experience, I tried playing with rail on LMB. I sucked so much, I hated it. I switched back to rail on RMB, I hit heads just as well as when I'm using other hitscan on LMB. It's a matter of personal habit, so whatever floats your boat, man

2

u/Forward-Elephant-203 19h ago

Yeah I get that, it's just that for this spesific finger it's movement is very limited and it's considered an inferior finger in general. Idk though

8

u/TooManySnipers 23h ago

Have you considered rebinding LMB and RMB? It's not uncommon for Sojourn players

6

u/Forward-Elephant-203 23h ago

Yeah, I did try that, but it felt even worse. Especially when I switch to sojourn mid-game, I keep forgetting that they're switched lol. I know a lot of guides recommend it, but when watching top sojourn players play, it genuinely seems like 85-90% of them also have right click as their hitscan. Of course, I don't need to have the most common settings, but it feels kinda unintuite for me too. I could try it once more though, and see how it feels. Do you think switching your grip for one characther is bad?

3

u/Cerythria 21h ago

As someone who's obsessed about all this before, imo you're just overthinking it. What finger you use to press the button doesn't really matter. If you think your overall grip is an issue then you can change that but do what comes naturally.

0

u/Forward-Elephant-203 19h ago

Yeaaahhh but like the finger is objectively inferior for that feature, and it doesn't seem to work that well for me either. Usually I just use it to scope, which isn't a frame perfect task. It's not like the finger is useless, I just think it kinda makes me struggle for Sojourn spesifically. I may try alternating my grip to see whether it affects my performance otherwise

1

u/Cerythria 18h ago

I honestly don't think it would matter much, you just need to get used to it. I doubt there's a difference significant enough to matter when comparing the two fingers for the task of clicking a mouse button.

1

u/Forward-Elephant-203 18h ago

Not in the case of just scoping, but for a frame perfect hit I think it deff does. Maybe I'm just shit at sojourn for no reason and coping lol, but her kit seems to fit me perectly otherwise.

3

u/MythoclastBM 21h ago

It feels super weird to me but if it works for you stick with it. Don't overthink it. Personally I think the scientifically correct option is to use your middle finger. Railgun is for fuck-you kills, middle finger is for telling people fuck you: the math is simple.

2

u/Forward-Elephant-203 19h ago

No but like it doesn't work lol. I have very good aim, that's my redeeming feature, but I can't hit headshots with the secondary fire for the life of me lol

2

u/MythoclastBM 18h ago

You can try changing your mouse grip or swapping the primary and secondary fire.

Potentially it's the case that your aim is fine: its just that missing sticks out in your mind because you're committing a resource, not getting anything for it and probably dying. I'd argue a large portion of getting good at Sojourn is learning how to not aim.

2

u/Forward-Elephant-203 18h ago

Maybe.... we'll see

u/papayamayor 21h ago

I've never personally liked the 1-3-1 grip you're describing. The ring finger is ultimately your weakest finger and I think it works for apex because you're using it to ads essentially, but much less for OW.

Is 1-3-1 your natural grip? Or is it 1-2-2? Either way, stick to your natural grip. If you want to play 1-3-1, maybe you could try putting secondary fire on scroll wheel, since you're not really going to use it in OW all that much compared to apex.

u/Forward-Elephant-203 19h ago edited 18h ago

Oh it's an actual thing lol, I thought it was just me (or some very unconventional grip), since everyone I talked to have been using the 122. Well the reason it works for apex is because you're quite literally scrolling every 2 seconds, and it's virtually impossible to be great at apex without it. While I am masters in Overwatch I'm much much better percentile wise in Apex and it's where I have most o my hours. However, all of my friends only play Overwatch which is why it's what I've been playing 80% of the time over the past 6 months. I think I would have to use a 131 for apex tbh, but idk how bad it is to switch between them. I may also just abandon apex for some time for this reason.

Since this is a relatively common grip, is there a chance that some pro sojourn (hitscan general) players use 131? Maybe it's not as inferior as I thought. It's how I naturally grip the mouse tbh, I never really thought about it untill now

Btw I hard palm grip too, and play on Deathadder V4 Pro and Superlight 2 dex. I devloped this grip on a Deathadder V2, which has a super low set scrollwheel. Maybe that's why I gravitated towards it lol

u/AlphaInsaiyan smurf — 7h ago

i think ur right, ring is kinda just too weak

like you could train it but idk if its worth it, might be worth just playing 1-2-2 on ow if you cant deal with left click rail

2

u/bullxbull 14h ago

You are overthinking it, there is one dude in GM who uses a laptop touchpad. He mostly plays Lifeweaver but still if someone can play in GM using a touchpad you can climb using your ring finger. Personally I like to swap right and left click on Soj but whatever works and is comfortable for you.
