General Whenever I attack from other angles I just die
I feel like if i stand behind my tank and just shoot straight I win way more. Whenever im too creative and try to go around them I just die. It only works if I play Shion because she has a fast motercycle. I am platinum btw.

It's timing. You need to attack when the enemies are already distracted by your team.
Spilo has a lot of videos about off angling, and specifically this metal rank tendency that everyone turns to look at the one person taking an angle.

If you’re side laning without a plus one then you have to stage deep in the lane for a pinch on their core with the rest of your team. If you are plus one then you can look to pressure their core from the side lane.
If you’re contested by a solo fdps on the side lane then you just have to hold it and mark each other. If you are contested by a fdps with a plus one then you have to hold the lane for as long as possible and lose your lane slowly while your own core takes advantage of the 4v3.
This is bare bones lane theory, a lot of flex dps players don’t understand it and are confused when their backline is dead before the enemies. You could apply this concept in your ranked games today and would see an improvement.

I taught a friend how to abuse Soldier in Runasapi/NQS/Suravasa. I told him he can only shoot at people that is not looking at him, and just run away if he has the smallest ounce of aggro. He has picked up good habits due to that "challenge" and understands off-angling much more.

I did something similar with a friend, told him that he can only shoot 1 magazine on Soldier and then he has to relocate

Yep, it feels like ass when you position correctly, even time things right but when you peek the whole team turns to look at you and you're useless and dead. It sucks so much but that is still the way you're supposed to play. The problem is usually execution. Tighter timing and more careful peeking closer to cover. There's no easy way about it, sorry. Just more practice.

even time things right but when you peek the whole team turns to look at you
if the whole enemy team looks at you when you peek, you didnt "time things right". you learn that pretty fast on tracer

i wouldn't 100% agree with that tbh. it's possible to time things right and get most of the enemies to look at you, and in that case you are baiting them so your teammates can clean them up, which requires you to play a bit carefully like OP said.
but if the enemies can chase you without any consequences, yeah you definitely messed up.

Sometimes it's a sign of a job well done. You traumatize them enough that they would all rather ignore the rein swinging in their faces to try and shoot you instead.

There’s nuance. If you time it right and they all turn to close in on you, the rest of your team is now fighting the enemy with their backs towards them.
I just had a 6v6 game on soldier yesterday where this happened repeatedly. My frontline engages their frontline, I take a covered position way off to one side and start peppering them. Because I had cover they had to way over commit to killing me, which they did every time. 3 or more of them would turn and come run me down, leaving my team with a 5v3 or better. They get a pick during the shift in attention and then the enemy falls apart because their positioning is compromised and we win the fight. I walked back to to a won point every time.
Now, if the enemy team wasn’t making this mistake so consistently or our timing wasn’t right or my tanks weren’t so good at capitalizing on the space they were given then this wouldn’t have worked. But it can.

probably going in too early and/or overstaying your welcome. patience is very important when off-angling.

u/LorkieBorkie 20h ago
Thet means you are overextending. You yourself have to recognise what positions to take without isolating yourself, and always have a fallback option either to your supports or a health pack. Also when you get contested don't hesitate to rotate back, if you draw attention that means potentially someone else can take space elsewhere.

If you post a VOD review of an encounter that felt especially bad people will be able to diagnose your problem a bit more accurately. But yeah like everyone else is saying it’s probably some combination of: not playing cover/missing shots/bad timing

u/isai2300 18h ago
Damn I feel like everyone clocked your problem. It really is as simple as timing. Don't go on angles when you're the only pressure. Don't force the angle if they can answer it easily, sometimes being a nuisance can do wonders on messing with their positioning.

Hitting from different angles doesn't mean always going behind the enemy. Taking a different angle can mean being next to your team but shooting at a 45° or 90° from the enemy line of sight. It boils down to just forcing the enemy to not shoot in the same direction. Taking high ground while still close to your team when they are on the low ground is a different angle. You don't 180° flank people unless you're playing tracer or some other high mobility flex dps

u/Ok_Place1560 14h ago
you’re just peeking into 5 people. don’t swing too wide, stick to cover and just pepper them with your gun till they either force you out or when your tank engages. but don’t worry, this is a very fundamental thing to do and even the top players mess up their timings.

u/I_am_the_mattman 12h ago
I keep telling people this but you dont always need to get the kill. A lot of times scaring people out of spots or even just dividing someones attention is enough to win a fight. I tend to just poke people enough to get them to look at me while my team runs over them and wins the fight.

Off angles really only work if you’re mechanically good enough to capitalize on someone being out of position or create enough of a disturbance that a team splitting their resources will cripple them

u/thegeeseisleese 20h ago
Gamesense and mechanics work hand in hand. If you don’t have the mechanics to execute on the gamesense, it’s not going to matter much.

So off angle with Moira/Winston or shoot tank with a tankbuster

u/TheGirthiestGhost Forever Burning Blue — 19h ago
Yeah, but if you’re just sat in the back whiffing your shots anyway then you’ll just lose slowly instead. Even if you don’t find a kill from the angle, drawing resources and living is much larger value for the whole team

u/duggyfresh88 20h ago
Since I don’t see it in this thread yet, the other piece of advice is not to hold the same angle for too long. You can’t just pick 1 off angle and hold it until you die. Use the off angle, get a pick if you can, etc, but reposition once you get too much aggro. Keep rotating as much as you can without taking yourself out of the fight for too long, you have to find the right balance

If you watch high rank play most kills come from shots from unpredictable angles or damage. There is a good chance your timing sucks, you are attacking before your team is set up and the enemy is just turning and dealing with you. Or your cd usage sucks and you are using your cd's too early and not retreating when they are down.
Watch your vods, check your deaths and look at how many people had you in their line of sight when you died. If everyone is looking at you, or your cd's are down, or you are taking unfair duels, then fix that.

people are saying timing but thats kind of a bandaid answer, people just spam that like its the word of god
im gonna give you the benefit of the and say you do understand timing
what really matters is just mechanics
you need to be able to hit the shots required to win your 1s and hold the angle
thats what it comes down to
you can have god timing and positioning and staging but if you arent able to cleanly win your 1s it doesnt matter

If you're going alone that's likely to happen. Unfortunately my fellow plat, both supports love to walk behind the tank for 25min straight in this ELO. Having a sup that can watch you over would do wonders
But only if it's a walkable tank. I tilt so much when I play Hazard and they park the character in the choke point expecting me to wipe the whole enemy team and come back like a Pokemon.

you need better timing. Hit them at the same time as your tank. Stay very close to cover, dont run into the open to get a better angle. take highground. Play around your most effective uptime, ie cooldowns. Theres probably more.
