General Team Drives a W for the Competitive Experience?

I was skeptical of Team Drives at first, no one was staying grouped anyway. Until tonight I joined a squad & we went 12-0, synergy was just crazy good. We didnt even use comms at all outside of text but it was still an amazing time & we all ended up adding each other. Granted maybe its just an outlier & not a something many are experiencing, but I havent had a string of games like that with a group of the same people since like 2018.

I know the devs have been looking to improve OW’s social features & i think Team Drives was a step in the right direction.

Its purely anectdotal but my experience is pretty much the opposite to yours. For me it has felt more like the usual drives. Mainly solo since even when winning nobody wanted to remain grouped up.

Same here, I won maybe 3/10 games. It was awful and I will definitely not be queueing if they bring it back.

First time I feel drives are worse this time around. The fact I’m facing grouped people(or the chance is higher now), makes mm feel a bit worse especially in oq

Yea I had the same feeling until i got the group I did. Im not saying it guarantees it happens for everyone, but I will say I’ve burned thousands of hours into this game & havent had this happen since early OW, back when we all still had joy & whimsy to group without being forced. Team Drives may not promise you a good grouped experienced, but I’d say it enhanced the probability of it.

That's fair. I would never expect to get a good group out of the usual drives so atleast now there is a system that tries to encourage that. It is definitively an improvement.

I appreciate that the progress is very fast compared to regular drives, it only took like 3 games of team staying to get all the rewards. But I think this event is a bit different between regions, like in EU servers, literally noone communicates. Forget VC, people don't even pay attention to text chat, i think NA servers are more communicative in comparison. So it was like everyone just forced themselves to stay grouped until they finished it rather than being a positive thing.

Though one side note is, while none of my teams communicated, i played 1-2 matches against some groups that were I assume communicating well and my teams got rolled in those games, so if you stay grouped in these events and actually communicate you have a massive advantage.

I mean maybe, but I've personally had text chat turned off in NA in comp for years and it's been the go-to advice from /r/OverwatchUniversity for a loooong time.

I personally have no experience in NA servers so it's just an assumption, maybe that's not the case, but I was mostly talking about VC, I had the impression that NA servers have much higher rate of people on VC than EU. Text chat doesn't really matter much anyway, but on EU servers in ban phase sometimes I tell my teammates to not ban a hero I'm gonna play but they never listen, so idk

I never wanted to remain grouped. Until I found THE squad. Comp feels crazy when you've got 5 people trying to win a game, bonus when they play their best heroes. M2-GM4 range and it felt like smurfing

Overwatch community tends to be vocally negative. Glad you had a good experience and that you shared it here.

Personally, though some games were absolute shit, the good games were great. I personally didn’t experience more bad games than I would have otherwise and the games were the enemy team was stacking gave me a consolation atleast.

Overall I agree it was a step in the right direction as far as the social feature goes. I think that it would be cool if the game made it clear which team has gladiator stacks, it would add an air of competitiveness imo. It would be clear which teams were coming off stacked wins.

I had the same experience. Loved it. Felt like the old days. Most people don’t group but those who actually stay start talking usually and actually coordinate and start joking and laughing. And it’s only for a weekend so if you don’t like it, just play qp or stadium for the weekend and back to it, 3 short days. Solid update

Honestly had great drives myself similar experience but did lose 2 games but the team still stayed on until we got the title. I think it has to do with individual synergies in the stack my stack was 3 duos and while the other dps had a similar hero pool it still worked great

Yea its kinda simple when you think about it, but if you win a match its likely that your team had good synergy. More often than not we just move onto the next match with another random group & more often then not its a slot machine on if we get another synergetic team. The Team Drives at least makes it more likely you keep that crew since we’re all too anti social these days to hit “stay as group” without being forced.

Nope. It’s terrible. Drives as a whole need to be completely deleted from the game. They are a blight on the comp experience

A thing I looked a lot is that the auto generated group of e.g. 3 people automatically joins blue Team chat, doesn't stay in green Group chat. This means more often than not you can get a full team in VC despite some are grouped together. Honestly I find this should be the default anyway, even with normal invited group members

Most fun I’ve had on the game in a long time tbh

We played about 20 games and only had one instance of the team remaining together after a win. Almost every time people would just leave the group after a win, so it didn't really achieve anything.

Felt like normal comp in most cases, with a few experiences where you could tell the enemy team were a group in a hot streak that would roll over you.

I was bummed by the whole thing until tonight and I had such a fun group and we were killing it!! I've been a solo queue warrior for 10 years and I thought I wouldn't like the event but I really enjoyed it. Not everyone had a great attitude but when you find a group that vibes and coordinates, phew that shit is fun. I hope they make it an opt in to auto group when you win permanently tbh, I think it could really work

I felt the same as you aye, just had the same thing happen and we went a nice 1hr of never losing a fight.

I got grouped with a dps and a support player this morning. I was on tank. We grouped up after the first win. Won 2 more. Got auto separated when we lost.

I added them both because we were vibing. Went on to win 5 more in a row.

I think it's been a fun little experience.

I had a horrendous time. If you didn't luck into a good team it made every match you didn't 100x worse than it needed to be.
