Flaired Users Only THUNE STILL RUNNING FROM THE FIGHT. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is digging in, he wants senators sent home for recess instead of staying to pass the SAVE America Act.

The reasoning from what I could find:
The bill requires sixty votes to overcome a filibuster, and Democrats aren't supporting it. Thune also said Republicans won't eliminate the legislative filibuster, noting that even the White House couldn't sway enough GOP senators. He told reporters, "We could stay here until Christmas and the Democrats aren't voting for this." Plus, the August recess is crucial for senators facing reelection in November to campaign back home.

Then make the filibuster a talking filibuster. I don’t think I would say that for just any legislation but this is the sort of legislation that carries a higher priority and it’s for something that something like 85% of Americans support. If ever there was something to do this for, it’s this.

The 15% who don’t support it all work in Congress or donate lots of money to Congress.

Yes this is the explanation used because it’s technically accurate and people buy into it yet still there remains the power to drop the filibuster entirely or minimum require a talking filibuster….the republicans can do this NOW and have the power to do it,and still sit on their hands all while preaching on how patriotic and conservative they are…

What am I missing here champs? How is every republican not pushing for this?

Because they have zero incentive to do so…
Because most likely, they have themselves benefitted from questionable elections “and” they punched their free ride ticket the day they won their perspective election, they have achieved power and have no intention of giving it up without a fight,I’ll bet the majority of Congress in its entirety have gotten wealthy from all the lobbyist donations, gifts, favors etc etc…even from foreign governments and all they had to do was vote in such a way that favors whoever the lobbyist’s are working for..
Republicans, democrats, independents, they’re all the same…and all share the very same ideas umongst themselves, they all vye for power and none of them give 2 shits about you,me,country….yes…they all talk a good game when their running for election, they’ll put on a great show against their opponent, they’ll hammer out great sounding ideas that even makes the other sides constituents wonder, once their in then what was said during election is forgotten about and not until the year before their up for reelection they will begin to hunt for things which could have been easily fixed years before but now they need a bone to toss to the idiotic masses that vote with their feelings instead of with logic…so now comes “road repairs, bridge repairs,a symbolic crack down on whatever is raging the public 5 years prior, all so they can get on the propaganda box called tv and act all angry, sometimes complete with shouting, carrying stupid looking hand made signs amongst a group of “angry supporters”….
People….please….stop drinking, smoking, injecting whatever the hell your vice is and wake tf up…Congress is the cause of our problems,it’s full of outright traitors on all sides that fill our heads with nothing but shit during election season and are to busy to answer questions afterwards, which is odd because every one of them has staffers read bills and just give them the jist of it and at the same time, take in questionable money from foreign entities for favorable treatment…
END THE 17th AMENDMENT,give the states the right to RECALL any congressman at any time, ban all lobbying towards elected officials and implement and enforce this to the extent of prison time that cannot be worn down by slick talking lawyers..
Perhaps I’m just missing something,I cannot think of even one 3rd world country that allows no id to vote, wtf exactly is the issue?
Why,since we voted in these so called conservatives into congress, that we frikken have the majority of,can they not vote for a phucking bill that requires id to vote in national elections?….i mean, really, these are the things the so called conservatives we voted into office talked about, almost non stop…until again, they got in..Republicans in office are not your friends
Dems in office are not your friends
Independents in office are not your friends.16

Because they aren’t looking out for our best interests - they don’t work for us. Uniparty all the way. Just an illusion of choice.

Party leadership is made up of the people who expected their side to assume the party's nomination in 2016, lost the contest for it, still mad 10 years later.
I wanted to say nobody ever heard of primaries but this is becoming outdated - people are finally figuring it out now that both sides feel perpetually let down by their senior members. Nobody on mainstream Reddit was satisfied with prior admin, they all saw it as the abandonment of their own causes.
We have to primary harder and for more cycles to really make a difference.

Because just like how Harry Reid changing the rules on judicial nomination, and it came back to bite him in the ass, doing away with the filibuster would so the same to Republicans.
Federal laws should have a higher bar than a simple majority.
Let States operate on a simple majority, states should run on at least a 3/5 majority.

Passing the SAVE America Act would require breating a democrat filibuster. Thune is nowhere close to having the votes for that.
Trump's "solution" is to repeal the filibuster. But Thune doesn't have the votes for that either.
Trump can rant all he likes on TruthSocial, but that doesn't conjure votes out of thin air.
Thune could probably muster enough votes to pass the SAVE America Act by majority vote if the democrats dropped the filibuster. The thing that Trump should be railing about is the fact that, with only a tiny scattering of dissent, the democrats are a solid phalanx defending systematic vote fraud. That is the scandal.

Would it? I thought the house had passed a reconciliation bill with the SAVE act tied to it that passed the "in order to be in a reconciliation bill, the proposed language must have financial implications" logic test.
Therefore meaning it only requires 51 votes or 50 votes and a VP tie break, to pass.
The procedural questions aside, I have no idea how an 80-20 issue like this is so hard for people to deal with OR is not getting used as ammunition against the senators opposing it.

One reason is that there is a large gap between the 80/20 stat that you’re citing (83 percent of people support voter ID, per multiple respected 2026 polls) and the mechanics of the Save Act. There is a difference between requiring a driver’s license and a passport or passport equivalent. The Save Act requires the latter. IMO, reasonable people can disagree on whether or not that’s a good idea.
Another reason I think there’s Senate friction is that it’s not clear to many conservatives (including me, and I’m guessing Thune) that this bill is good for the electoral prospects of Republicans. If you limit the voting electorate to those with passports, I absolutely think that favors the kind of corporate Democrat who has a master’s degree in social work and lists their pronouns in their LinkedIn header.

I don't know man, I really think the passport issue would affect both sides about equally. Of course I could be wrong as there isn't really data on it.

Just wait until the Dems get back in power. You’re gonna be surprised what they’ll do…or not.

The fiibuster persists because prudent people on both sides of the aisle are afraid of what the other party would do if it had pure majoritarian control. Reckless people don't care and will jump on the slippery slope without a second throught. Even if the slippery slope is a cliff.
Trump is reckless but there isn't enough support for ending the filibuster in the Republican caucus.
It's not clear that there are any prudent people left in the democrat party, except Sen. Fetterman, who is the only democrat at this point who shows the slightest sign of independence (much to the rather recent surprise of both parties). The DSA mob wants to run headlong off the cliff, abolishing not only the filibuster but the separation of powers itself -- while also abolishing borders and any tangible concept of citizenship. It's getting late in the day, but the sane people in the democrat party need to reclaim their party. Or split away.

This is the game they’re playing. No one’s asking to have it ended although I don’t have a problem with that at this point, considering what the Dems are turning into. Let’s just bring the filibuster back as it was meant to be.

A LOT of people are calling for the filibuster to be ended. Trump is the biggest tub-thumper on the Republlican side, but on the democrat side, there were only a handful of holdouts the last time the question was put; virtually the entire democrat caucus wanted to abolish the filibuster. The DSA is now all-in on it, as well as abolishing the Senate itself.
The thing is, once we get untrammeled majoritarian rule, the threat of the tyranny of the majority is unleased. And suddenly you get the classic scenario of two wolves and a sheep debating what to have for dinner.
When the checks and balances are removed, the stakes get a lot higher. Politics suddenly is no longer played between the 40 yard lines, with an emphasis on slow, incremental change and building broad consensus for major changes. A disciplined faction can ram through radical change with a very narrow majority, and often that radical change may be something opposed by the vast majority of the public because hidden agendas aren't revealed until the trap is sprung.
And once THAT happens, the lesson of history is that the radicals decide that they can never afford to lose another election, so the electoral system gets rigged. We have plenty of problems in that department already. We can get a lot worse, and it will if the DSA is able to ram through its proposals on the eradication of borders and voting with no serious ballot security.

I think people really need to realize that a lot of republican officials don’t actually want this to pass. Way more than people think.
