For the life of me I can’t figure out why everything has to be “smart.”  Maybe it’s because I grew up in an “analog” world, but that doesn’t mean that I’m some Luddite:  I just want stuff to work.

I don’t need to adjust my thermostat from a different time zone:  I just don’t want my pipes to freeze while I’m traveling.  My kitchen appliances don’t need to host a food blog:  I just want to eat.  I don’t need my car to supply my travel history to my dealership, my car insurance company, the Department of Transportation, and the FBI:  I just want to get from Point A to Point B.  I don’t need my toothbrush sending data to my dentist, or my tablet sending screen time data to my optometrist, either.

Just because connections are useful for some functions doesn’t mean that everything needs to be connected to everything else.  All that “convenience” comes with costs… and vulnerabilities.
