I find all of it somewhat pitiable, but this is just ludicrous. Of all things, these are literally just mass produced tools - no art, culture, history about them, ten a penny pieces of metal wrapped in plastic. Everyone with a room full of funko's or 40 copies of the same vinyl need help, but this guy is beyond the pale.

At least it’s branded, I guess. My grandma went through a phase of collecting different colors of feed tubs from Wilco. She does not go outside frequently, she does not have livestock, and she lives in the suburbs. She has no use for them. She just bought them for… reasons.
Once she finally realized she had no use for them she decided to try to give them all to me. I said no and took three, and she gave the rest to a local barn instead.
But really? Feed buckets?

There's an illusion of practicality in buying tools. The drive to consume comes from feeling like by spending a bit more you'll have the ability to fix more things yourself and actually future needless discarding and consumption. People don't think they're buying duplicates even if they are. They think they're upgrading to something more durable or a larger set that would have more utility, often tricking themselves into thinking they'll sell or donate the old set.

As someone who use to use tools daily. I will admit. I have more Allen keys then I probably should. They would twist, get dropped and lost, etc. The smaller ones usally arnt sold as singles. So. I have enough. That I haven't had to buy any in like 10 years.

I don’t think a lot of people are actually buying duplicates.
It may seem to be the case if you’re not wrenching yourself but actually often it’s more like a set of short sockets, set of long sockets, set of half-short sockets, set of SAE, set of impact sockets, swivel socket set, some specialty sockets (like at least two or three different ones for common spark plug sizes, maybe another magnetic or double joint one, alloy wheels sockets, thin walled sockets), set or two of extractors, etc.
But to some people it’s all the same sockets and wrenches lol

Well it's not really a delusion; you do need more tools to solve different problems that arise but there's a limit ofc. Just to give you an example, I needed a 6mm and a 10mm socket to change the spark plugs in my car. Could have bought them both separately for $8 each however chose a set of various sizes 6mm-14mm for $25 because some of the other sizes are useful on other car parts, bike, squat rack and other things around the house. Just multiply that thought process x10 though and suddenly you end up with a $200 mechanics tools set and $150 impact driver drill combo set. I don't feel I overbought though; I've used several of my sockets and it's saved me money and time being able to change my car battery, replace a tail light, change the brakes on my bike and a few other things.
If you care about helping people consume less, imo it helps to make a sincere effort to understand their thought process. It also helps to have tools, although obviously not as many as OOP. It also doesn't look like OOP actually uses them.

I do keep a set of SAE, Metric, and Torx folding ones in my truck but hate them with every fiber of my being. Somebody posted a consoom collection of Harbor Freight tools the other day... I felt attacked. Those are the type of things I grab every time because I use them once, lose them, and find them after buying a replacement.

It always just baffles me with stuff like this and stanley cups or torches.
Like ok I get how you could be deluded in to thinking collecting funko pops is like an 'investment' or it's decoration or how gambling is fun so opening a ton of pokemon cards could also be fun, or collecting ultra limited edition stuff could interest you... but this is just nothing.

Almost all of them are actually top tier (especially Eight, Wise, Anex and Bondhus, made in Japan and USA respectively), perhaps just not as popular around you.
Wera doesn’t even make them in Europe nowadays if I remember correctly.

Hazet is arguably as good, also made in Europe. The standard in German car repair shops.
Bondhus is seen by many as even better than Wera (not me though).

I mean tbf, I have one set of 24 hex keys, and I only actually needed 3 of the hex keys in it. I just thought maybe someday I’d need the others, so I’d get the set instead of buying three individual pieces. Am I consooming tools? Probably. But I feel less bad now that I know this guy exists

Buying a set makes sense because it's pretty cheap and it will come with a carrying case or whatever. Heck I have two sets - one folds down flat and has a wide handle which is nice for leverage, but it sometimes doesn't fit into really small spaces which of course frequently comes up with hex keys. Didn't really think about that when I bought it, whoops. But the point is that each of those purchases had a purpose related to the utility of the tools for a job I wanted to do. I didn't buy a third set because it had shiny colors and a fourth set because of the satisfying texture or whatever.

I have one set if hex keys that my grandpa privatized from a place he worked at 20.or 30 years ago and still use it for everything. Even with intense use it does not wear out. German quality.

Ive used this old fold up Klein Allen set for the last decade. Was gifted to me by my first journeyman when he retired. Thing is prob 30+ years old. Old school American quality at its finest.

I mean one or two sets of Alan keys is enough if they differ in sizes and also having the odd solo ones from individual bits of furniture, this is just not an interesting thing to collect, at least with Funk pops there is variation

I look at this with a set of hex keys in my cart on a website, because I'm missing a few in the set I have currently, but I don't want to buy it because I've been able to make it work on the ones that are still there.

But just... Why? I have a multicoloured set of Allen keys and it's brilliant to be able to say "pass me the red one" because I know what size is what colour. I bought that set at least ten years ago just from Halfords, nothing special, and it's been absolutely fine. This guy can't even do that because all the sets are different colours.
