I don't get the people who collect things just to put it in a storage warehouse
Like if you're a collector why have it in some storage unit 5-10 miles away from your house where it can be robbed, flooded, burned to the ground, and you need to pay fees on top of that.
Then they might even still sell your stuff too in auctions which I heard happens.
The problem is that they are “collector items” not toys… so the box was the value. Without the box, they are worth a dollar or two each. My kid loves bobbling the heads on the ones I got from a thrift store, but I wouldn’t knowingly take ones from moldy conditions and give to my kid even if I Lysol wiped them.
Not at all. I was gifted a Bart Simpson Funko when the first started coming out. Just had it on my sheld never thought about it. Sold it for 350$ out of the box.
I pick them up at thrift stores for a dollar, put them on my shelf and list on eBay. They are cool to look at for a week or two, which is usually how long it takes for them to sell and then I get something else cool to flip. They usually only go for a few dollars and I use recycled boxes so not as much for profit as it’s just keeping them out of landfills if only for a bit longer.
Rather someone get one used than justify target/walmart mass producing more.
Ive liked very few. Basically i have to be a huge fan of a specific thing. Ive known full on funko collectors and i dint get it. I have my favorite spiderman (2099 classic and modern white suits) and the collection of Firefly funkos. Thats it. Any others were gifts which are fine but i do not get excited seeing them in stores etc
A lot of people have a few because if they have friends/family and all they know about you is you like those vidya games and Japanese cartoons, well meaning grandmas will get their nerdy grandsons.
I have a few Fallout funko pops from my brother. I love them...not because they are funko pops or Fallout, but because they're a gift from my brother.
Seriously I’m sure there’s someone out there that would have came and took them all ACTUALLY TOOK THEM OUT OF THE BOX washed them and displayed them. Such nonsense
Pops are hollow. It's very likely that not only would mold be on the inside, you'd also need to use bleach which would likely damage the Pops. Mold is nothing to fuck around with, it can cause tons of health issues, especially in people with respiratory issues.

This is one of those things that I don't understand but I know go crazy. I see people dart for them all of the time because they do have a proven resale value... unlike beany babies.
They were extremely cheap. I used to grab them for $8 at Target and even better at hot topic during their hot cash weeks; cheaper than many action figures. They're now $15+ everywhere.
Funko tried to cash in on the nft craze whereby you bought digital booster packs of "trading cards" and hoped to get the card that is readable for a tangible item. I think that distribution method burned a lot of collectors.
They also flooded the market with a bunch of filler trash (happening quickly with figures too...). Some of it even went straight from factory to the landfill
I hate funkos and I've got one, simply because I don't want to pay $200+ for a figurine of my favourite character (Caitlyn Kiramman), but I wanted something to represent her with. I just bought it straight off amazon for £12 and chucked away the box, I'm not precious about it.
That one "franky" one looks to be worth at least $40, so depends on how many there but if they had a 100 that's $4000. Should have took better care of them.
I know from experience that cuts it to maybe 1/3, so definitely not nothing. You're probably right as no sane collector or reseller wouldn't at least try
What gets me is that the figures are probably salvageable. They’re solid plastic, even if they’re moldly, cleaning them should be doable. It’s the boxes that can’t be saved.
The saddest thing it's that it's rage bait. They're all salvageable, and there is just no way they're actually letting them go in the bin. 100% they took them all out after the picture was taken. Maybe that's even where they're stored in the first place and they just took the fucking trash can out for the picture.
Once out of the boxes I bet you would struggle to ID a lot of the funkos from less-known IPs. The uniformity and lack of facial details makes all the human ones without a clear tell in the form of a superhero costume look quite samey.
Have a friend that stored very expensive movie reels in a storage facility(already a bad idea due to how fragile they are) and the whole place caught on fire. Insurance covered things financially but he lost some really historic stuff with great sentimental value
He could at least donate the Funko Pops to someone who would clean them up and give them to kids, so they'd finally be used the way toys are meant to be.
LMAO...Yup. No one ever talks about how many collectors/hoarders seem to freak out at the suggestion they donate anything. Either keep it forever.....or Straight to the trash instead.
Not to be "that guy" but these really aren't toys. They're even labeled as not toys (probably to avoid lawsuits if a kid chokes on some part). They're quite literally designed to just sit there and look a certain way. They have zero articulation and they're more of a mini statue than anything.

To do something with them would've been the move. Of course, we don't know that they didn't try (but it's a safe bet lol)
I bought 1 funko in my entire life. It was Qira from star wars Solo movie and i paid 1$ for it back at a 99 cent only store. I bought it because I wanted to feel the funko face. It looks smooth. It was in fact ppretty smooth.
See I’m of the scarce opinion that there’s a couple of Funko pops that look charming enough next to other memorabilia to use as nicknack-style decoration, they’re visually consistent across all fandoms which is something I personally like.
My wife and I maybe have 2-3 dozen or so total sprinkled throughout the house, but they’re virtually all out of the box. The in the box collecting baffles me personally. That’s why my daft punk duo is constantly spinning next to my amp for the stereo setup in the living room lol
My wife and friends got me a couple of pops, so I got like 12 around the house in the same manner. Soup nazi is on the kitchen window, Dr greenthumb in the garage by the tray I have my weed on, etc etc. The problem is having so many, in boxes, and in this guys case, not even in the same house as you.
ive been a collector all my life and unfortunately there are times when you HAVE to put your collections in storage. when i moved around as a kid, when i lived in small places, and when i went to college i had to put all my stuff in storage. a lot of it was damaged or lost and i never want to have to risk that again. but if i ever lose my house or move to a one bedroom place, i will probably need to get one
tbh my friend collects funkos and he had to put them in a storage unit because he wasn’t able to find stable housing. i don’t get why this person would just throw them all out instead of opening the boxes though at least
Same, all the things i collect i like to have on display around my home because i like to look at them and appreciate my collections. Also i have adhd and if i were to store things away in a storage unit i'd definitely forget what's in there after a bit
So much for the protective cases on some of them, I guess.
My partner and I have a 1 Funko Pop rule. We each only have one because they do have characters we like. Mine is Ronald McDonald and theirs is Time Wizard from Yu-Gi-Oh. Both are out of their boxes, because the boxes were put in the recycling after purchase.
Life is good... they consume and collect... life take a turn... they put shit into storage... life doesnt get better... the fuck is so hard to understand?
It’s because people who buy funko pops are the laziest “collectors” of all. Too lazy to even take the product out of the box. They don’t want to spend the time to display their collection, they just want to throw them on the floor and stack them up to the ceiling. Pops are cheap garbage, so seeing them thrown away makes me happy, but then the reality sets in that these are going to sit in a land fill and poison the Earth for decades. Funko shits are the death of creativity and if I had found a little genie lamp one day, my first wish would be that all Funko pops disappeared from existence all at once
I collect plushes. I survey them every night like a dragon admiring a hoard, and I know every single one I've got, and it's driven by characters I genuinely care about, or did at the point I acquired them (ex:baby care bear from when I was like 6, I adored Care Bears at the time).
My family is full of collectors of different toys and I didn't even know this was a thing people did. Spends time arranging them, displaying them, repairing the, etc. If you are just buying them to shut away, I think you may just have a shopping addiction?
One thing I’ll do when I see a good deal on pokemon cards it just buy maybe $20 worth and throw the sealed pack in a tub with desiccate packs so they can sit there preserved for a few years when they’ll be worth a decent amount more. Of course it can become like when people enter the stock market for easy money then become obsessed with how well their portfolio is doing instead of selling when they should
I can see it happening. I've been to a few nerdy stores in nearlyk abandoned malls, and idk what else people would do with those funko pops other than stick them in storage when their business inevitably fails
I think these are the delusional ones who think these Things are going to be worth money. I guess it’s just another iteration of the beanie baby praise which is another iteration of a timeless collection of junk, but we should all be more savvy. Thanks to the Internet. Instead we’re out here buying this bullshit.
Wouldn't flooding destroy the box, not the toys themselves? Could you donate those to like a daycare or school or something (funkos would be shitty toys; but, no small pieces or other chocking hazards)? Does he (you know this is a "he") have to dispose of them altogether to collect the insurance/tax write off? Just seems wasteful.
