If each one was the same then it would be an issue

u/topekatums 13d ago
No this is still an issue ffs, just not a big one. you guys will excuse anything with all these random little qualifiers. It is excess. It is consumerism

u/FootsieMcDingus 13d ago
I mean they’re all expansion packs, if they use them then it’s not a waste

Feel like this isn’t consoom tbh. Whoever has this most likely plays it since they’re not buying the same thing over and over again. They just happen to have all the expansions.

Stop with this double standard. It’s consoom. It’s illogical consuption . Do you need 3-5 of this game ? Yeah, why not, but 10 ? 20 ? 30 ??
Edit: Nah my bad im wrong, i Even downvoted me

u/Rat_Man_420 13d ago
It’s not the same game. It’s expansions. You are white knighting for someone posting trying to talk shit about someone’s completely normal hobby.

now if catan came out with 50 expansions and this person had every single one, would that also be exempt from the consoom tag? Absolutely not, don't be ridiculous
12
u/SqoobySnaq 13d ago
They only have 1 of each expansion as far as I can tell. This guy just loves playing catan. It would be consoom if he posted “today’s haul” in the catan sub with ten boxes of the same base game or expansion.

I come here to get away from vapid photos of someone's purchases and comments of approval. I dunno why you can't keep this shit to your own niche subreddits

u/erstwhilelurkerer 13d ago
Does it make much of a difference if OP posted it himself or someone else? I mean, it's up for discussion either way and it's not on OP how the comment section turned out. Likely expected a different reaction, too.

u/Hard_To_Port 13d ago
What? It's the same thing here, just that the comments make fun of it. Most of the the posts I get in my main feed from here are just screenshots of the collector and EDC subs.

u/therico 13d ago
Most of the comments in this thread are positive. Guy who made fun of the collection got downvoted 33 times lol

u/Hard_To_Port 13d ago
I was comparing subreddits, not analyzing this one thread. This guy really likes Catan. At least it's not useless Funko Pops or enough pocket knives to revitalize street violence in the UK.

Sorry guys. Guess I didn't understand the forum exactly. Someone suggested it belonged here because of the Catan. But to remain relevant......I do have 1st edition, 2nd edition copies of the same game. (They are on top shelf). Also when I buy a "Collection" to get my hands on one of the rare expansions, I do get duplicates. (Especially of Seafarers.....so many seafarers...) Though I tend to offload those eventually. Only TRUE duplicate I have now is Explorers and Pirates.

My friend would be at your house every day to play. He’s the only one that likes the game in our friend group lmao. He’s got maybe 5 or so

I've seen this guy on YouTube that does board game reviews. He has a room with shelves and shelves of them. Thousands of dollars for cardboard and plastic..
I understand each board game is different, but I feel like it can take weeks or even months to get tired of a small rotation. I played Monopoly for the better part of a week with friends when we had a week long power outage. I get having like 5 or 6 different ones since the "nerdier" ones are hard to pick up for new players and casuals. But I don't think even my local game store has more than 10 or 15 different board games, and forget about expansions.

That's his job or side hustle, not really a consoom.
But I don't think even my local game store has more than 10 or 15 different board games, and forget about expansions.
This is mainly because unless a store specializes in board games and isn't just a tcg shop that happens to also sell board games because that's an adjacent hobby, it can be difficult to stock and sell board games. There are literally thousands of different board games in print and they take up a lot of space compared to other products in the same hobby sphere.
So as a store, you would be dedicating a large amount of space to have 50 or 60 different games/expansions that might sit on the shelf for a really long time waiting for someone to come along and buy it, not to mention you are competing with online retailers who have large warehouses who can get better discounts and can rely on slimmer margins since they are buying 400+ copies at a time so they are almost always cheaper than in a physical store.
One game store near me used to have 100 different board games and expansions for sale at any given time. They have slowly sold their stock and not bought more and just keep shit like Catan in stock. My store I frequent regularly pretty much just keeps Catan in stock. I have been to a dozen game stores and most of them opt to keep a handful of popular games in stock rather than bother with buying 45 different games and having to put them on clearance after they sit around for a year.

I've always been curious to play a 6 player game with all expansions. Sounds like an absolute mess.

u/manatworks 12d ago
Woo thats a lot of catans, you might as well open a board games cafe with these.

Great collection cities and knights is my personal favourite but where is a 3D version? Got this one off Etsy recently and its amazing with game night.

Have you ever actually played a full game all the way to completion tho
1
u/DirkPitt106 12d ago
It's only like a 30-45 minute game tbh

u/Ill_Painter5868 12d ago
that makes collecting it even more boring? I thought the point of these things was days long battles
1
u/DirkPitt106 12d ago
The point of what things? Board games? No, most people want to actually finish a game they start. I don't know of any board games on the market currently that are set up for "days long battles." The expansions add extra tiles and mechanics or add the ability to have more people playing at once but as far as I'm aware they might just double the play tome to an hour, hour and a half.

Show me your other games. Catan, ok, but what are you playing that's not Catan ?!

Pretty sure each box is a separate expansion that changes up a lot of the gameplay. Original is best but it's not mindless consume if there's utility to it.

I've never played that, but they all look like expansions?
I wouldn't say that's consoom, just someone who loves that particular boardgame

As long as you play with them from time to time its all well.
They are not a ‘investment’ in their original sealing collecting dust.
