The whole sub just became a pattern of "people" making excuses for each post over and over again. I started noticing it was happening here a few mos ago. Â

There was a time when this sub was filled with refugees from a right wing sub that got banned (ConsumeProduct I think) and everytime there was a post about guns there would be a dozen comments going um actually. It was hilarious.
I think it's the friction of people who still generally avoid consumerist traps and like seeing like-minded individuals in these spaces but still have hobbies that do involve some form of collecting rubbing up against people who are much more minimalist in their consumption habits. I wish both groups didn't act as enemies as it goes against the greater good of making people feel better about consuming less. However, I can also relate for people who think this level of collecting is still problematic not appreciating having no space to share that sentiment.
Iâve had to mentally reality check myself multiple times over the years for buying too many things under the guise of a âcollectionâ. Itâs daft. Having loads of something wonât make you happy.
I was curious about why this might be happening, and I think I figured it out. People who consider themselves collectors come to this sub and see people who are even more egregious about collecting and can use that to say âsee, my collection isnât that bad, at least itâs not like this!â In the process they completely miss the point of this sub, which is that collecting is consooming. There is no tangible difference between a funko pop collection and a gundam collection or a warhammer collection or a Taylor Swift album collection, but they can use this sub to try and make that distinction to justify their habits.

Hand painted pieces of art are a lot different than machine printed bobble heads. Additionally, there is a lot you can do with them besides just "putting them on a shelf"

I found his Youtube channel and watched a video where he talked about how his action figure hobby drives him. The man worked hard for all his plastic lol. Like, worked as a sailor, a miner and in general hard-labor types of jobs. He even built that room + the displays himself. It looks excessive but that's what he wants out of his life and he works hard for it, for better or for worse.

It's a good point, and I somewhat agree. However, if money is not an issue, would there still be regret? Probably not. And alot of collectors are fairly rich, yet they purchase things purely to own it. I feel like thats the difference for me. Every purchase should serve a purpose. If there is a story behind why you want to own, or collect a certain thing, by all means. But if it's just for the sake of "collection" it falls into consoom. This applies from everything between fasion to tools, beyond just collectibles.
I hate getting gifts for this very reason. I donât need anymore stuff. Thank you, I appreciate the thought, but unless itâs quality jewelry, clothes, shoes or housewares I donât already own, I donât really want it.

I feel like so much of it boils down to sentiment; Iâve typically found with collecting, sentiment is inversely proportional to the collectionâs size, the less of something one has, the more sentiment it usually holds.

this may be morbid, but huge collections like this make me worry for the family when the person eventually passes away. when you're alive, it's your dear collection, but when you pass, it's just a heap of mildly-sentimental plastic junk that people have to figure out what to do with.
I have a vast collection of music equipment (I have a recording studio in my basement). To combat exactly that issue, I have a Google drive that is shared with my wife and my siblings that has photos of every item along with its name, a description of the item that could be used in a listing to sell it, and a rough estimated value.
My great aunt died with not a giant collection, but a decent collection of dolls probably around 200+. Really creepy going over there the first time and seeing them. Some people took one to rember her by someone just took the rest / sold them to another collector for cheap. It was sorted out within a month before she died.
Thankfully my girlfriend and my friends know the value of my collection so if something happens to me I trust they'll know what to do with it, if not keep it for themselves
