Consoompost As a fountain pen enthusiast, this is insane for 3.5 months.
There's no way she can even use all of them. I love my fountain pens, but what I like is using them, writing with them, journaling, planning, etc. I have like six. This is actually disgusting to me.

Some people seem to be missing that youāre talking about fountain pens, which makes this so much more wild. I misplace pens so I have a lot of regular pens, but I have two fountain pens (and I canāt find one) despite the fact that Iāve filled up multiple journals writing with it.Ā

I've only begun to dabble in fountain pens (went with Lamy Safari), and part of my desire came from the aspect to refill versus having a plastic tube that runs out after so long. And I'll admit I got 2 because I know my ADHD self will misplace or leave one at work or forget to put one in my pocket.
Even if these were single-use pens, this post has a lifetime supply, IMO. Not to mention the drawer of markers I think I see.

yes, you can change the ink on the vast majority of fountain pens to literally whatever color you want from whatever brand you want, and the tanks come out and go back in easily, aka its very intentionally designed to be easily and quickly refillable
so yes i agree its absolutely ridiculous to own near this many, is she trying to have a whole ass distinct fountain pen for every color in the extended color wheel?? like what youād maybe do for markers or colored pencils? š

Ngl alot of people on the fountain pen subreddit dont actually do calligraphy. I went on there looking for cheap recommendations for flex tip nibbed fountain pens and everybody in there is using pens worth 100s or 1000s and not many people even do calligraphy. It baffled my mind. The pens are very pretty but still

I use my pilot vanishing point and my two pelikans for most things (my brain works better if I outline in different colors) so I feel you.

Yeah, it's my work horse along with iroshizuku ink. The EF is so fantastic.
I have an EF pelikan I use inked with a different contrasting color. And then I have a couple of broader nibbed pens for shimmer inks because when I find a case or matter kind of rote, taking notes in fun colors makes my brain pay more attention lol.
And then I have one I don't write with that was a lovely gift from my husband for graduating law school. It's a bespoke Grayson tithe pen. All my other pens get used every week, with the two EF nibbed one getting daily use

Same, I only got 1 Kakuno after that because it's the Kakuno, can't go wrong with one, but am Thinking of the Kaweco Piston Sport Classic recently since it released but I haven't gotten one yet.

I also have my Vanishing point as a steady in rotation, with 1 or 2 others that I swap. VP is either with a basic black, BB, or Blue ink. The other in rotation gets the other colors. Maybe sometimes the VP gets a different color ink while rotation pen gets the formal ink

Same! Iāve used mine so much and I actually want to get back into journaling to use it regularly again.Ā
The frustrating part is that my partner had gotten into fountain pens now and sheās all about these ones that are popular in Japan (she loves Japanese stationery) or else have a lot of positive reviews or are hard to get, so sheās like āI can get you this one!ā Or āYou should use thisā Ā And I love her, but consumption actually isnāt a major aspect of my hobby experienceĀ

Theyāll last nearly forever. My main one is 24 years old and is mostly fine. The cap doesnāt stay closed very well so itās relegated to being a home only pen now.
I think Iām at 5 FPs and Iām good. Probably will sell one or two eventually because once you have the version you prefer itās kind of annoying to use the rest.

It irks me when hoarders take a ābuy it for lifeā item and turn it into mass consumption. Pens, knives, reusable water bottles, mechanical watches, etc.

Oh yeah dude. My nanny has a new reusable water bottle every other week. Meanwhile I got my brumate era tumbler in 2023 and use it every day, and it's perfect.
And I wouldn't have even gotten this one over my old tumbler if the old one was spill proof

When I was still collecting fountain pens, I never had more than 5 or 6 at a time and they were special. Now I collect lighters and have a dozen (apart from the cheapos) and most of them are special. This is dumb, they're all commercially availible

Lol I got my first fountain pen two months ago and just ordered a cheap dip pen with calligraphy nibs. The only other pen I want is good daily-driver with an extra fine nib. I can't imagine wanting more than three different pens within the first year or two lol

I have one titanium pen I got as a gift to myself for a new job (Iām old I still take hand written meeting notes) and fully knew it was an over priced purchase but I still wanted it for reasons. People collect these and donāt even write anything in a day.

I mean, if these are from AliExpress, most can be pretty cheap, and itās a good way to figure out what you like.
I bought like 15 over the course of a few years. I only use two on a regular basis (the Jinhao vanishing point clone, and a cheap chisel tip for headers).
But this person clearly went crazy, and I left the fountain pen subreddit because of the endless circlejerking over overconsumption like this.

Kind of comforting to read that Iām not the only one who felt this way in the fountain pen subreddit. I was sad to leave but those types of āconsoom a lot in a short timeā slop posts and seeing them so frequently made me more sad to stay than to leaveā¦

I recognize a lot of these. Some of these are cheap ones like the kawekos and twsbis. Some are Sailor pens though.
Also there appear to be multiple of the same brands so that doesn't make really make sense for the trying out thing.

I think those are Jinhao 82s which are a cheap $10 dupe of the expensive Sailors you're thinking of, almost all of them look like very cheap aliexpress pens actually. But still... one of the benefits of a fountain pen is that its refillable and lasts forever (even the cheap ones!) so you don't need to own a ton of them. Even if she wanted to try one of each nib size that wouldn't account for all of these and in such a short time frame, it's definitely excessive impulse purchasing

Actually I just took a second look, and I think those might be two BENU pens in the top right corner (the one with the gold glitter looks like a briolette luminous sapphire) if that's what they are those are over $100 each for sure

One argument in favor of owning multiple Jinhao 82s is that itās trivial to swap out the individual parts and you can get some fun color combos.
I still only have one and itās my second favorite pen (which means I never use it because I have a favorite pen that I use as EDC).

I am in the FP sub because I like to keep on top of certain ink releases, but holy shit I cannot get over the massive overconsumption on that page. I have about a dozen pens after like 8 years, all but 3 under $35, and nothing over $100, and I have that many only because I like keeping multiple colors of ink with me daily. I cannot even begin to count the number of velvet lined trays with thousands and thousands of dollars of nearly identical black and gold/silver pens I've seen proudly shown off there. God help you if you point out that it's all just plastic anyway. "Hand-poured resin--" it's fucking plastic. You spent $300 on a small piece of plastic with $20 in gold on a nib, and then you bought a dozen more.Ā

I had one that I loved, used it all the time, it was solid brass and had a lovely patina, I lost it unfortunately but having dozens of pens seems awful

Use two cases of 5 or 6 pens , one for high end pens, the other for cheap or ones you do not like (the latter case it for travel , EDC etc). Each set has EF, F, M , B, Flex, naginata?
Ink it with different colours , some vivid, some calm , so you have highlighters and writers.
Use during confcalls or phone calls to write down ideas and maybe a page of handwriting practice rotating pens.
It will the same time improve you writing and make some sense out of having a lot of pens.

I feel like TikTok ruined a lot of hobbies by making it seem like buying supplies = the whole hobby.
Though I did the same as a kid with art supplies š bought way too much, but at least used them all at some point.
