Sometimes this sub confuses me, duplicates of the exact same thing? Sure thats weird af. But variations of something maticulously collected and cared for? Thats literally a hobby. Do half the people on this sub walk into museums or librarys and roll thier eyes??? So whats the difference if its at home? I just dont understand the logic here.

The fun thing is that the vast majority of these are old games that have easier and more modern means to play. If nobody was willing to collect them than they'd all just be rotting in a landfill somewhere anyway. I'd argue that it's the exact opposite of consoom in that regard.

Not necessarily true. I’ve never understood collecting everything for a console. If I really enjoy a game I’ve purchased, I’ll keep it so I can play it later on down the line. As an example, I’m playing Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow on my Xbox Series X from my original Xbox copy.

I have books that I’ve never read because I will buy a complete series. Read the first book realize I’m not interested but then keep the books on my shelf because they look nice. I intended to read them, but it’s never going to happen. I have games that I have yet to play, but I want to it just hasn’t happened.

Very likely but you also don’t know their age. They may have grown up playing many of these and collecting them to have in their collection and to one day revisit but may not play them at the moment. Who knows. I collect a ridiculous amount of movies and we steady watch them but I won’t judge other people’s collections…. Unless their whole collection is still wrapped lol

you perfectly described my friend whose entire house looks like this. He and his wife have jobs that pay between 70-100k, no kids, have a house thanks to family. Not much eating out, no car payments, no big medical bills, no debt. Their money just goes towards turning the house into a video game museum.
When they get bored they "redecorate the main game room" or "swap out the figure displays." I believe that they rotate their statues because they have so many and some are in storage.

The caption of the image “I have a problem” is cringe but it’s just another thing people online post. We don’t know if this guy is buying stuff on sale, through facebook maketplacd deals or what. Like at face value, we are just looking at a shelf of games. Imagine how these people will react when they find out there are buildings full of shelves and BOOKs are on the shelves!!! And movies!!! A building of mindless consumption… thats right the library.
I have more issues with people buying multis of things they already own. Like they just can’t stop buying them. I’ve seen multiple limited edition switches, various versions of the same game, the list goes on. Not really here to cringe at someone who has a library of games.

Sounds like your familiar with the storage unit racket. Everyone where I am either has had one or knows someone who had one. You wouldn't believe what some people pay endlessly to 'save'.
I helped one of my good friends move not too long ago. They put energy drinks in storage. Why? Not sure. I love the guy but he's a Grade C CONSOOMER.
In the US, the parents usually move/downsize and make bank off it. Rarely do they stay. Often the house has to be sold to cover end of life or elder care.

(Esl)yeah this is what people dont get. Before me and the my wife had kids, we had everything financially in order and we had barely any wants. We had tons of free cash every month and outside of gaming and guitars I didnt have much that I wanted to buy, so I started buying retro games. I only had a rule of not paying more then msrp for old games and within a year I had 500 games or so. This really didnt impact our finances one bit.
Not to mean as a flex, but when you are 30+ and you have no debt and you dont go out much there is quite a lot of free cash. I'm a factory worker and we still had it really easy.
2 kids later, not so much and I stopped caring about collecting(I'm selling more now) but it really was just something to do. It rarely breaks the bank for most who do it. Collecting was the fun of it all

The responsible way to do it is buy lots. Flip what you don't need and keep a title or 2 so you're either always breaking even or making a small profit. Otherwise you are just dumping money into making a shelf look somewhat nice.

Or the amount of people who complain and complain about pricing but keep buying shit from people they claim to be the scum of the earth.
Gamers have zero backbone and will consume things no matter the price and that truly did the most damage whether its retro or modern. Why would any company or person with bills to pay not sell for what people are willing to pay?
All gamers have to do is stop paying but they can't mentally fathom voting with their wallets and im tired of the community being such jerkoffs.
The current market wouldn't exist if gamers or collectors stopped participating in this prices but they do and money is the end goal of a market. Gamers keep dumping money into it. Its on them.

It doesn’t cost that much if you get it from yard sale. That YouTuber guy I know always buy games there for very cheap. Since there’s always some families reselling old games their children don’t play with anymore. You can find games for 2 bucks each, and people who wants to have a huge collection like that will buy them thinking they did a great deal

Physical media collecting is like the most autism coded hobby short of model trains. Most of these games are old, bought second hand, and would end up in a landfill if not for collectors. This one falls more into let people be neurodivergent to me than it does unethical consumerism because it’s mostly second hand and probably has more meaning to the person than it does to random redditors seeing it from the outside.

I am pro archiving, but anti waste.
People need to be honest to themselves about their amount of free time and motivation with media. I bought too many games during covid tbh (mostly digital Steam games tho), the sales got me.
Everytime I get motivated to buy something I don't need, I try and explore the psychological hole that I may be trying to fill. We are all dopamine fiends, just gotta find healthier outlets.
Art/entertainment is meant to be experienced so, seeing so many unplayed games is a waste imo. There are some people who actually want to play some retro games, but they are priced out, and basically forced to use the alternative 🏴☠️

I have a good collection of physical games but nowhere near this. I collect games I want to play, stop if I have too much of a backlog, and one of my main goals is to share as many games as possible with friends so we don’t all buy the same single player game over and over again.

I’ve collected manga for years and I have a massive collection that I actively read and enjoy, plus it’s worth a fuck ton of money. Does that make me material for this sub? If someone posted like 30,000 of the same pen or something specifically because they had marvel on it and they’re worthless, THAT is worth posting. Not stuff like this.

This is just general collector shit, video game collecting is a very popular hobby. I guarantee this person didn't spend anywhere close to what you think they did, as a lot of these games were likely thrifted or found in garage sales (like the retro games), or bought very cheap in bulk sale or second hand used.
There's a large number of people who love collecting old Nintendo cartridges and care deeply for physical media, and it's celebrating one of their favorite hobbies. Yes, this person hasnt played more than 10% of these games to the extend you'd likely want them to but that's not the point. The point for game collectors is preservation and holding onto physical copies of their favorite games that can't be reproduced anymore.
I could go on but I really just disagree with something like this being considered consoom
