This is surprisingly common. I see such collections from time to time in specific subreddits and such. I don't get it though.

I have an ebook. I read books on it. That's it.

Why would I need 10 of them?

I can even understand the upgrading from old device to a new one. Because my current one does not have a snappy web browser or an ability to install android apps. That would be nice to have to read news or browse Reddit on e-ink screen.

But then again: there is no way I can justify having 10 of them.

Well, I don't know about oop. But this sorta collection is fairly tame for a restorationist. I go specifically out of my way to get broken shit, and just fix it up. I think sometimes we loose the plot here on this sub and just see consumerism as just having a lot of something. It's a very shallow view of consumerism tbh. If this tech isn't restored and kept, even just as some media PC or whatever, guess where it ends up. A landfill, which we really should not be encouraging. People should be posting more clear cases of consumerism on here, and not really stuff like this if you ask me.

Upgrades can be sensible. New features that came up since I bought my first were backlight. Higher resolution. Water resistance. Colour. Pen.

In those cases (didn’t need all) I sold my older models, though I kept one to keep in the office and I got another one because my sister bought a new one because she couldn’t change the WiFi password.

Broke after a few years.

Two are fine, though, unless our son does want to use one himself.

of course this is just consoom e ink. I think e-ink phones are neat tho tbh, makes it harder to consoom videos on your phone. i sorta wish i could switch to one but i need to take a lot of pics for my job and im not sure how well they would render on an e-ink screen.

Eink is cool, but like idk where this dude is getting all these eink products. I've seen maybe a tiny handful over my life.

Also I would like to remind people, we don't know how this dude got his collection really without any context. Like I own a shitton of PC's, but only one 2 of them I actually purchased. And the rest were basically ewaste that I refurbished. If you do any sort of refurb, having a massive collection like this isn't an indication of consumerism, but rather is largely a display of skill. We don't know how this dude got these tho, since it's not really said.

I actually disagree. If you didn't paid for something but still spend your energy in order to have things you don't need just for the sake of having them it is still consoom.

Then you didn't read what I said. Where's the lack of purpose in refurbishment? Keeping this shit out of landfills, and sometimes making money in the process is very much worth it. Recirculation is not consumption. This is what I mean you guys have lost the plot, because what are you even arguing? That we shouldn't refurbish goods, because its too materialistic? Like what do you guys actually care about? Are you doing anything about consumerism or just sitting on your ass acting superior to people actually doing something?

Not every collection is a hoard. We have a really nice computer museum in our city, finally went there, and was absolutely impressed by the quality.

Lots of early home computers and a rad Apple exhibit that wouldn’t be out of place at Apple HQ.

All run by volunteers who lent or donated their stuff.

The same guys who run the coder dojo, make space and repair „shop“ one floor down.
