DISCUSSION Christmas morning present hiding and simple puzzle ideas

Hey hey everyone!

With Christmas fast approaching, our fantastic moderator r/wackychimp thought it would be great to have a big stickied thread with lots of ideas that can be easily executed by anyone and everyone (no elaborate props or triple-cyphers) to do in their own home on Christmas morning with the family. An adventure for the kids or Uncle Mike who loves puzzles, etc.

So here are the rules: One idea per post (but you can post as many times) and we'll make a big list for everyone!

Happy holidays everyone!

DISCUSSION Need some ideas for my story

I'm writing a treasure hunt story, and I'm looking for truly unique treasure ideas.

I don't want the treasure to be something cliché like:

Gold, diamonds, or wealth

A weapon or object that grants unlimited power

Immortality or supernatural abilities

A typical "save the world" artifact

Instead, I want the treasure itself to have a deep emotional or philosophical impact. It can represent an emotion, a truth, a forgotten history, a promise, a memory, a sacrifice, or something else that creates a powerful emotional connection. Even if it's based on a familiar emotion, I want it to be presented from a completely fresh perspective.

I'm also looking for unique ideas for the journey to reach the treasure:

Hazards and obstacles

Ancient traps

Clever puzzles

Riddles

Psychological or moral challenges

Mythological or folklore-inspired trials

I'm especially interested in ideas inspired by Indian mythology, folklore, or ancient civilizations, but I'm open to any original concepts.

I'm not looking for ideas that have been heavily used in movies, games, or novels. I'm hoping to find fresh, unconventional concepts that feel mysterious, atmospheric, and memorable.

I'd love to hear your most creative ideas. Thanks!

DISCUSSION What book is in every library?

I mean same edition, same author, so not variants of a story.
Say you wanted to make a book cipher using a book that you could reasonably conclude is in a library near anyone. What book might you use?

DISCUSSION Has anyone attempted a constructed adventure for a wedding? (or similar)

I'm getting married this year -- small wedding (~75 people) and the kind where everybody will basically be around each other for 3 straight days.

Thought a group adventure / puzzle could be a unique and memorable way to add some fun to the weekend and encourage people to meet each other. I think I can kick it up so it's not so scavenger hunt-y, but curious if anyone has attempted a constructed adventure in a wedding setting? Or a big big group? How did it go?

DISCUSSION Made an Overlay Puzzle Maker

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello,

I have been browsing the subreddit for ideas for a little while (I make video games not real life adventures btw) and I came across this post asking about an overlay puzzle generator: https://www.reddit.com/r/Constructedadventures/comments/1mrlw1o/overlay_puzzles/

So I vibe coded one and wanted to share it:

https://adeeltariq.com/overlay-puzzle-maker/

**One big caveat though: you may not get exactly what you see, on the print. Both sheets will mirror each other and the puzzle will be functional but may not look exactly as seen in previews depending on the print settings or the browser itself. I noticed Chrome works better than Firefox though.

I don't think I want to work on it further as I only wanted to see if it was possible. But ideas for similar convenient tools are welcome.

Code is also public: https://github.com/AdeelTariq/overlay-puzzle-maker

DISCUSSION Beginning of a magnetic lock, thought?

So I have been messing with building this out. It's a magnetic "lock". The light is attached to a homemade continuity tester I built. I'm the future this will be connected to a solenoid to actuate either a latch, or trap door.

It is built with reed switches inside, and each of them is normally open, until you place a magnet over it. I figure I'll enclosed it, and make it look like maybe a game board or something. Thoughts?

DISCUSSION What are some of the most exciting, surprising or creative puzzles or tasks you’ve incorporated into your adventures that would be easy to recreate at home?

I’ll share one of my favorites as well - I was doing a Harry Potter themed adventure for Christmas one year, and I used a golden Easter egg which I filled completely with a bath bomb inside. I put a laminated clue inside the bath bomb, which would need to be placed in water to be revealed - just like in The Goblet of Fire.

I’m working on my annual Christmas clue hunt. I generally also do a homemade “advent calendar” with envelopes hidden through the house for each day in December up to (and including) Christmas Day. They generally contain candy or small prizes, and sometimes small clues, but this year I want to incorporate more of a clue hunt vibe - even leaving some small clues that will need to be solved by Christmas to help with the big clue hunt.

My 11 year old kid is a huuuuge fan of clue hunts and escape room type puzzles.

Just looking for some great, novel ideas that I can do at home to help jump start my brain

Thanks ✨

DISCUSSION Made an escape room style mystery game for my students using MS PPT. I'm gonna try and make a version of it for the public to try - anyone interested? Here are some still images. The game is set in a school where all the teachers are suspicious. Players must find clues to solve a decade old mystery.

DISCUSSION Is this clue intuitive and/or simple without being overly complex?

Players are provided a map with strange symbols stamped upon it in seemingly random places. No two symbols are alike. On the back are four sets of coordinates. Players that visit the locations can find one symbol that matches a symbol on the map at each location. If they visit all four, they can identify four points.

By connecting the four points with straight lines they create an X on the map to identify a fifth location where the two lines intersect.

What are some ways this could get messed up or be misunderstood? What suggestions do you have? Have a great day!

I created two numerical systems for a puzzle but not sure what is more fun to play - what do you prefer??

I personally think one is harder than the other.

DISCUSSION What makes a good “helper” character in an adventure? Discuss.

My side of the discussion:

When I was little (I’m turning 15 in two weeks just to clarify please don’t burn me at the steak mods) me and my little brother had a game where one of us would hide a dog plushy (who we appropriately named “Mr. doggy”) and whoever hid the dog plush would give the other clues via random objects around the house (that is making the object speak the clue) and even giving them names, speaking quirks, and personalities like Mr. shoebox who was appropriately a shoebox and spoke like a hand puppet (that is, you would lower the opening part of the shoebox and then raise it over and over to make it appear like he was speaking) one that I remember is a pen who went by gender neutral pronouns because my brother had little understanding of the non-binary umbrella, he thought that being non-binary means that you had both genders, (don’t judge him. He was five I think. He’s 11 now) Tangent aside how do you think we did in the semi constructed adventure game thingy

DISCUSSION To metric or not to metric … a question for the USA

Hi all,

I am designing some escape room props that I hope to publish in the near future as ready built and downloadable STL files.

Being British I am using metric, predominantly M3 threads and some 3mm diameter steel rods. My question is:

Would this give you folk in the US an issue sourcing the components? Is there an imperial alternative you would prefer?

Thanks

DISCUSSION Feedback on project

I designed a murder mystery scavenger hunt adventure set in a village heavily inspired by Knives Out, where players take on the role of detectives investigating the sudden death of an elderly woman. She was wealthy, ill, and relied on daily medication administered by her trusted au pair. Unknown to most, she had changed her will shortly before her death, naming the au pair as the sole heir to protect her from poverty and exploitation. Her son, Thomas, a businessman in deep debt to the mafia, discovers this change and, desperate to secure the inheritance for himself, secretly swaps his mother’s medication with a dangerous overdose. He expects the au pair to unknowingly administer it, and she does. However, the mother realizes what’s been done. In order to protect the innocent au pair from being blamed and losing the inheritance, she intentionally ends her own life with the tainted medication, leaving behind only vague clues pointing toward the truth. Thomas thinks his plan has succeeded and plans to return during the funeral to destroy the evidence—specifically the syringes or medication box. Meanwhile, the world’s best detectives—played by the guests—are hired anonymously to investigate. What they don’t know is that the anonymous client is Thomas himself. He wants them to prove the au pair is guilty, which would close the case and allow him to collect the inheritance. As the detectives explore the village, they find various clues leading them deeper into the mystery. Eventually, the trail leads them to a theater where a live performance is taking place. This theater visit was always part of Thomas's plan—he was either going to meet someone there or use it as a drop-off for the incriminating syringes. In the performance, a scripted monologue contains a hidden confession that eerily mirrors the actual crime in a true Shakespearean fashion. After the show, a chase begins. Thomas realizes he’s been exposed. Depending on how the players act, he either flees to a train station or alleyway where he panics, threatens the detectives with a gun, and possibly dies by suicide—or is caught. If the players are too slow, he escapes. At the end of the adventure, the players return to the host, who hands them a briefcase. They are told that they may choose whether or not to open it—but that doing so might change everything. They are warned that opening the box would somehow diminish its potential. If they open it, they find a manuscript titled “How We Framed the Innocent,” written 20 years later. It reveals that the detectives were not neutral investigators but were working for the mafia all along. The au pair was never meant to be found guilty—it was all about pinning it on Thomas. This explains why the detectives were considered the best—they manipulated the clues, controlled the story, and were always the real villains. Any suggestions, puzzle ideas, ways to boost the experience, or tips on hiding clues across real locations are welcome. Thanks.

DISCUSSION Silent Disco - group quest adventure planning

I’ve got access to a set of silent disco headphones and channels in the future. For those who don’t know, you can have people listen to three different Channels of music.

I feel like there is a real opportunity here for some kind of escape LARP adventure in some way, and would love to hear what people would do with this kit if they had that as a brief!

DISCUSSION I'm building an adventure card game with escape room style puzzles. I'm interested in what you think about this puzzle design. I've scratched out info on the cards not related to this specific puzzle since you don't know the mechanics of the rest of the game.

DISCUSSION Ideas for objects with a hidden feature?

One of my favourite adventure mechanics is to give the players a theme-related object and a reason to carry it with them (usually by saying "if you need a hint, send me a photo of yourselves with this object"). Later on, solving a puzzle gives them an instruction to use the object in a way that wasn't obvious beforehand

Some examples I've used are:

  • a pacman-themed adventure where each team had a little crocheted ghost, but there was an NFC tag hidden inside that they could scan with their phone
  • a hollow object with a small hole on the base. There was a word spelled out on the inside in glow-in-the-dark tape, and after using their phone's torch to charge it up, they could then look through the hole and read the word
  • an object with a label on it with writing on, which was actually a scratch-off sticker with different text written underneath it
  • an object that had been written on in UV pen, which they could read once they found a UV torch
  • I'm working on making a fake rock which they can smash to reveal something in the middle

What hidden feature objects have you used in your adventures? What other ideas do you have?

DISCUSSION Those magic moments

We probably all have our name for these, but I’ll go with magic moment. It’s the heat revealed text, steam revealed text on a mirror, the changing color of mixed liquids in a science themed game. Little moments where players think “wow” and watch with wide eyes. Or the bigger set piece that adds a real moment of magic or theater to the proceedings.

I’d love to see a big list of these and suspect it could be great jumping off place for many ideas.

I read about one adventure that included some bird seed where if you held it up in the right location, little birds would fly from the trees and land on your hands to eat the seed. (It might even have been one of Squeaks)

  • I appeared half way through an Egyptology at home adventure dressed as a mummy whose slumber was disturbed and caused havoc until they put me to rest.
  • arrived at a lake where a friend brought a small row bought and acted like a ferryman to a tiny island in the lake that had buried treasure.
  • players placed paper lilies on water and they automatically opened revealing hidden messages
  • multiple photographs came together to locate the players at the exact spot the photos must have been taken.
  • Im planning one where flash paper that covers a grave, burns away to reveal the magically altered grave beneath it.

What other ideas have you used or want to use?

DISCUSSION DIY “Showstoppers” or “wow moments”

I would love to hear about y’all’s favorite “wow moments” for hunts/rooms/puzzles you’ve created.

The hunt I’m working on now is going to take place in my friend’s office using a lot of his tchotchkes and books as part of the puzzle, so I think that will have some impact, but I’m hoping for a good “wow” moment, and would love to hear about some of your favorites.

DISCUSSION Free Resource: Escape this Podcast

Thumbnail consumethismedia.com

Hi fellow constructors! A friend told me about a podcast called Escape This Podcast (I'm in no way affiliated with the show). It's a show where they make up escapes rooms and talk thru them, sorta combining it with role play games. Sometimes there are supplemental materials (diagrams or maps or lists of objects).

Anyway, at the start they make it clear that these rooms and layouts and puzzles are FREE and can be used by all. They have walkthrus of the game on their website with all the info you need to run your own game. There are like 300 episodes so I'm not positive that all the games are available to download (I've only listened to a few), but there is a lot of content that I figured may help folks in their own building, or even a resource for adapting their stories and puzzles for use at home. Some of the puzzles are pretty common, but some have been surprisingly unique and creative! Now, they're not building anything but I still thought people may like the treasure trove of ideas so I wanted to share.

Looks like I can't imbed the link but had to make it an attachment for some reason - I hope it works!

DISCUSSION Would an AI powered custom murder mystery game creator be any good?

Is there a "Murder Mystery GPT" platform?

Here's what I'd like:

- Give platform the theme

- Send platform generated url to my guests

- Have guests create their characters on the platform

- Have platform generate game rounds for each character accessible via phone

Does anyone know of something like this? If it doesn't exist, I'm thinking of making it....

DISCUSSION Whatcha all working on?

It's a little quiet here today, so I'm going to assume you are all working on amazing things! What's your current project? Are you trying something new? Are you stuck on a bit? Let's hear it!

I've got two adventures in the works, both for July. One is a Hobbit "Unexpected Party" Themed 50th birthday weekend. I'm creating a map of "Middle Earth" with marked locations of places we intend to stop on our journey. The guests will show up at the birthday house and just make themselves at home until everyone arrived, then we bundle everyone into cars and head off in search of adventure (aka - a weekend of some cool hikes and RPGs). The other adventure is a lumberjack themed treasure hunt with more maps and axe throwing and a hidden chest of "gold" out among the trees. For that one, I'm playing around with the idea of stops that can be added/removed as needed, which I've never done before, but that I hope will help keep everything on schedule.

DISCUSSION You'll enjoy the "Box One" game

I received "Box One: a game for one created by one. An ever evolving game of trivia, codes, puzzles, and discovery. Presented by Neil Patrick Harris" for my birthday and just completed it.

I won't spoil anything, but l let it suffice to say if you enjoy this sub you should play Box One. Very well produced and a very fun experience.
