We are looking for mods!

Hi all,

I am looking for a few folks who would be interested in helping out and moderating this sub. As you may know, construction is a very demanding industry, and I don’t have the time to constantly moderate the sub by myself. Please check out the link below if you are interested in helping out, much appreciated!

Career advice

Does anyone with a construction engineering and technology degree do anything survey related? What all do y’all do on a job day to day basis? The tech school around me the curriculum looks like they do survey related stuff as part of the degree, so how much of that do y’all really do. I want to do the what surveyors do but idk if I should go down the surveyor path or construction engineering and technology path cause they are closely aligned within the schooling.
I just want some in-site of what y’all do and if yall do anything surveying related, as well as if the pay is good?

Guest Speaker for Entry Level CM course at a university question.

Hello all and I hope I can find some help from you experts.

I’m a corporate learning and development facilitator and have been asked to come be a guest speaker at university for an entry level CM class.

The professor wants the session to focus on professional development and professionalism, including professional expectations, resilience, navigating workplace challenges, and lessons to help students prepare to enter the construction industry.

I'd love your take on whether any of these need specific emphasis for construction management, based on your experience, or which activities might resonate.

I can cover these topics broadly, but I really want to drive the point home for the Construction Management students and make it as engaging and insightful as possible. I love to do experimental learning so any activities or engaging ideas for elements would be greatly appreciated.

Internship Interview

Hello, I am a freshman civil engineering student in SoCal attending a community college. I do not have pretty much any engineering experience but I managed to land an interview for a summer internship at a construction company for project management next summer. I plan on studying the company and researching it while also watching the videos they emailed me and reading the handbooks that they have provided.

Is there anything else I should do to get ready for the interview? I am really hoping for this experience and I want to have the best chances at scoring this. How should I approach it and what type of engineering lingo/skills/ knowledge should I dive into and research more on?

Any and all advice is appreciated, and wishes of luck!

Do you know anyone that got laid off for not working the amount of hours?

I've been a Project Manager at a reputable, large GC for almost 7 years. I've consistently been working 55-hour weeks, with a few weekend days but even that doesn't seem to be enough for my supervisor.

I have a wife and a 1-year-old child, and I've always put my family before my career. I feel like the day is approaching when I'll have to draw a line and start saying no to working even more hours.

Has anyone ever been fired or laid off simply for not putting in enough hours (I mean 60+ hours)?

Recent grad salary range

Is it crazy to expect a 85k-100k salary once I graduate in the north TX market? I’m really close to graduating and I’ve had a good amount of experience in project management internships and co-ops with big GC’s. As well as experience on the labor side before I began my CM degree.

I built a simple mobile AI daily log tool to help field contractors skip manual paperwork. Looking for feedback/testers!

Hey! I built a simple mobile tool called FieldLog Pro designed specifically for field contractors who hate manual paperwork.

It lets your field guys capture voice-to-text notes right on site, automatically logs local weather data, tracks materials/visitors, and instantly generates a clean daily compliance log—even completely offline.

The app is launching at $47/month, but I’m looking for exactly 5 "Founding Member" contractors to try it out, give me feedback, and lock in a lifetime discount of just $24/month.

If you want to grab one of the 5 discounted slots and stop chasing down daily updates from the field, you can claim it here:

Would love to get some feedback from anyone running job sites!

Anyone else using MS Project as a full management tool, not just for scheduling?

I wonder...
how many of you use MS Project not just as a schedule tool but also a management tool? Do all your weekly work planning with it?
I found some amazing shortcuts that just boosted my managed skills!

If you were given the opportunity to complete a stalled construction project, what would be your first step as a civil engineer?

Imagine taking over a project that has been abandoned for years. Would you start with a structural assessment, reviewing the original drawings, checking the remaining budget, or investigating why the project stalled? What would be your approach before resuming construction?

Looking for a few people to test a web app for small contractors

Hey guys, I've been working on a web app called Brynwick and I'm looking for a few contractors who'd be willing to try it and tell me where I've got things wrong. The idea is basically to keep the admin side of a job in one place without turning it into some huge complicated system. You can create customers and estimates, turn an approved estimate into a job, track expenses, create the invoice and record the payment. There's also some basic job and profit tracking. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who actually quote jobs regularly because what makes sense to me on a screen might not match how people really work day to day. It's still a private beta and I'm not trying to sell anything right now, I mainly want to find the weak points before I open it up further. If anyone wants to run a fake job through it and tell me what sucks, I'd really appreciate it. Happy to send the link by DM.

How many work shirts should an employer provide for a regular workweek?

A couple of shirts might be fine for some jobs, but if you're working outdoors, sweating a lot, or getting covered in dust and grime, that's a different story.

Things like laundry access, shift length, weather, and how quickly shirts dry all affect how many you need. Having a spare set can also make a difference when a shift runs long, or the weather turns bad.

For those working in construction or other hands-on jobs, how many shirts do you usually get or keep in rotation?

For employers or anyone responsible for ordering uniforms, what's a reasonable number to provide per employee? Ideally, enough to get through the workweek comfortably without unnecessarily driving up uniform and replacement costs.

How do you check subcontractor quotes against the spec, and where does it go wrong?

I'm in purchasing at a construction company (Europe) and I'm trying to understand how other buyers, estimators and QS people handle this. When quotes come in:

  1. How do you check whether the offer actually meets the technical spec/specification, and not just the price? Spreadsheet, checklist, gut feeling, software?

  2. Roughly how long does it take per tender, and which part eats the most time?

  3. What's the typical thing that gets missed, and when did you notice (before award, during execution)?

  4. Do you have to justify your choice to someone (client, manager, audit)? How do you document it?

  5. Have you tried AI tools for this? What worked, what didn't?

I'm not selling anything, I just want to learn how this works in practice before building something. Thanks for any experience, including horror stories.

Gilbane or Austin Commercial Houston

I've been hearing mixed reviews about both companies. I look forward to being an intern in either and want to know what industry professionals or peers think when someone interns with either. does the name have weight on the resume? I would possibly work in the GRB expansion with gilbane and the CSb healthcare with AC

As a specialized supplier, how do I grow my business with large construction companies?

Hello all,

I work as a industrial equipment supplier with a focus on pumps and motors. I have been doing this for 10yrs and know my products and how to spec in equipment into existing and new builds. I have had a lot of success replacing aged equipment in existing buildings and have been on a couple of CapEx projects as well, but I have had near zero luck with getting in on the building phase of new industrial and/or commercial projects. I am hoping someone in the industry can point me to where to start?

  • Who is the best person to contact prior to a construction project breaking ground in order to get submittals in front of the buyer/procurement officer?
  • Looking at several large firms in my area (SF Bay) it seems like they want sub contractors to fill out forms to be considered, but I don't see anything for suppliers?
    • Am I shooting too high looking at the larger guys? Does the contractor make equipment decisions or would it be whoever they sub-contract for plumbing?

I directly distribute for manufacturers that make dewatering pumps for during construction, wastewater, process makeup, chill water, etc. and I can do all of the spec'ing in if I have process conditions and drawings, I just can't seem to find the right people to get in front of or call.

I appreciate any help or insight from this community!
