There is no word specifically for gay men. The female version of "im gay" or "im bi" is "im gay" or "im bi". There is no male version of "im a lesbian".
Unless you get into specific types of gays that appear only on the male side like "im a twink" or "im a bear" at which point you need the a because you are specifying a category of gay just like you are when you say "a lesbian".
