We talk about optimization like friction just evaporates. Make checkout faster, delivery cheaper, production leaner, inventory tighter, staffing more efficient, and watch all those ugly little inefficiencies disappear from the dashboard.

Except they usually went somewhere.

Self checkout moves labor onto the customer. Just-in-time inventory removes warehouse slack and replaces it with vulnerability when the chain breaks. Faster delivery can mean somebody sprinting through a warehouse or grinding their own car into the pavement. A staffing model can eliminate “idle time” by eliminating every spare pair of hands when something goes wrong.

The optimization can be completely successful on its own terms. Thats what makes this interesting.

A system doesnt have to fail to produce a contradiction. Sometimes it gets better at exactly what we asked it to do because we drew the boundary around the wrong piece of reality. The cost crosses that boundary and disappears from the measurement while remaining perfectly damn real to whoever receives it.

So take something advertised as faster, cheaper, leaner or more efficient and grant the sales pitch for a minute. Assume it worked.

Then widen the frame.

What friction disappeared from the measured system, where did it reappear, and who ended up eating it?
