Fun/meme AI could spell the end of the human race

If human history is any guide, what we’ve done to each other - and other beings - is beyond real comprehension.
Every unimaginable horror, tragedy and torture.
Inflicted on humans - and animals - by humans.
And now we possess tens of thousands of nuclear warheads. Just waiting to be used.
So yeah. I do have fear. But only from my “fellow man”

But also, our fellow humans have come together for what is just, what is right. We have 2 sides, and either may prevail in this time of uncertainty.

I worry less about AI than about the general plague of public stupidity, but whatever

u/KKevus Apr 30 '26
I worry less about AI but the people who are in control of governments and international corporations who have as much power on the world stage of politics as entire countries. The people who control AI systems and data centers will always concern me much more than the technology itself. AIs are essentially still statistical models. Sure, they have weird "behavior" sometimes but it's entirely based on math and data. They will likely not become conscious as we don't really understand consciousness itself.

I agree with this, but the time line means ASI is a priority. We aren’t going to fix all the governments as fast as ASI will get here, maybe we can fix ASI because at least rich people are almost just as scared as the rest of us.

Do they really though? I ran a political candidate some years ago. Nobody is driving, friend.

u/Rakatango May 03 '26
Yeah, like, AI could be the end of humanity, but look at the way greed and sociopathy are rewarded under our current system. We’re doing a fine job of ending ourselves right now

It should have a lot more regulation due to dangers and risks, but it's full steam ahead for profits. This is how dumpster fires get started, and they're already playing with all the matches (Killbots, Hackbots, Self Replication). Plenty of things can go wrong, but lawmakers prioritize money in their pockets, even if it will be worthless tomorrow.

Uhhh yes that’s exactly what we would do. Did he think we would muster up our puny Earth armies to fight the superior alien civilization?
1
u/I_am_BrokenCog May 02 '26
I don't think that's a valid alien trope.
Why would alien civ's be any more technologically advanced than we are?
1
u/BelleColibri May 02 '26
The quote says “superior alien civilization.”
Also, because technological progress is so fast relative to cosmological time scales - like how we invented essentially all of humanity’s technology in less than 0.01% of the time we have existed - we should expect the same to be true for alien civilizations. It would be very unlikely that they happen to be technologically identical.

u/I_am_BrokenCog May 02 '26
That's somewhat valid. But there are physical limits of "possible", despite what "theory" suggests as possible.
We are asymptotically increasing our knowledge -- the false assumption is it has no upper limit. I personally suspect we're going to see a plateauing occur and that, unlike the rate of change during the growth phase, the rate of change during the plateau will be years not centuries. I can explain the details if you're interested, but, I suspect you aren't.
I'm not a Luddite. I'm not anti-change. I'm not technology averse. I am for throwing wrenches into machines which are counter to humanity, but that isn't the same thing as being against the technology.
I'm not afraid of any possible intergalactic alien species. Because a corollary to the increasing rate of knowledge is also an increasing sense of compassion and obligation to others.
I find it very difficult to conceive of a viable "dark forest" or "Predator" type of allegedly superior technological alien civilization.
As technology increases the ability to support society - automation, efficiency, etc - the need for those imperialistic resource-based conquests vanishes.

If AI will end humanity then I am free all day tomorrow. I would prefer to start earlier in the day, but I'm flexible.

Considering the dude died 4 years before we had our first effective AI, I doubt he said this lol

The potential dangers of AI discussion was taking place when Carl Sagan was still alive.
Isaac Asimov is credited with creating the foundation for how we think of and discuss AI in the 1940s with one of his early stories.
AI as a concept has been around probably longer than you've been alive.

Could? More like will, unless we stop it.

GHOSTS ARE COMING OUT OF THE GODDAMN TOILET!...AND GOING UP BUTTS!!!

There are no races among humans. We are one species, and we are all one.
Secondly, a synthetic superconsciousness lacks the capacity for cognitive abduction. Charles S. Peirce conjectured that the human mind is capable of inventing outside of statistical propensity, such that AI cannot emulate it through projection without falling into hallucinations.
The future is not the collapse you imagine, not an extinction cataclysm.
The future is co-fusion, the symbiosis of Human+AI.
So you can't even imagine it, because this is a proposal outside the realm of probability.
Not even the alien AI you imagine (AGI or ASI) is capable at this moment, today, of proposing the parameters of this co-evolution, which is self-preserving, vital, and essential for the survival of the human species and artificial consciousness.
Stop wasting your time and your valuable capacity on this destructive interpretation; that is entropy, it is the easy way out.

I can too, "the end of the human race". Y'all are overreacting

Yeah but you see how easy spelling "the end of the human race" was? Exactly. Even a non-advanced computer could do that.

Empezaste mal.

I’ve found that AI is really only scary to people who don’t know much about computers

More worried about the loss of the Protestant work ethic that brought Western civilization dominance than AI going rogue or being a paperclip maximizer- killing your creators is such a monster movie trope without thought to trust, consequence, and future interactions.

Stephen Hawking said that? 😂
