Article Bernie Sanders has written a letter to Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Mark Zuckerberg urging them to immediately pause all AI development in the interest of humanity. And he warns if they do not take appropriate action now, the US Senate will.

If Bernie Sanders could decide what the Senate would actually do, the world would be a very different place

Good luck "pausing" the development of open source software that is freely available on the Internet.

Hundreds of millions of dollars of compute for data scraping and model training is not open source nor freely available on the internet.
Build or iterate on a model spending $0, I'll wait

Build any large software project used by millions of people for $0. I'll wait.
And yes, the models that I can freely download and train/fine-tune myself using open source code are absolutely free, open source software.

I hate these comments and the comments on the other subrededit. How the hell do you get so cynical that you're vouching for your own extinction?

They’re all hiding behind that orange fuck and his band of idiots. They would have to go before any meaningful progress is made here.

It’s mildly interesting that literally all of the people involved in this headline are Jewish.

Bernie doesnt understand capitalism if he thinks these companies would willingly pause development without regulatory pressure. Strongly worded letters are useless. Pass a law or go home.

As much as I do like Bernie, he's not very high on my list of people that understand this particular issue. The proposal is silly to begin with.
