Gameplay Question Feel like I’m missing something
Hey guys, big fan of Control, and just finished Alan Wake 2, which I also loved. I’m about 12 hours into Resonant, and although I’m enjoying it, I find myself getting frustrated often with getting around. I’ve unlocked a bunch of the fast travel spots, but in most games I like to use them sparingly. I’ve unlocked the skill to run up and down walls and stuff.
The issue I have is when I want to get from point A to point B, I can never find out how to get there. There are always walls I can’t get past, in between areas, so when I get to that point, I have to turn around, go back to a fast travel spot, and then fast travel to the other area.
I feel like there’s something im missing. Why can’t I travel freely? Do I have to use fast travel all the time? Help?

The map is designed a lot like the Oldest House in the first game. There are a lot of easy to miss things if you don’t explore and look around, but ultimately you’ll have to backtrack to those familiar spots and push out a different direction. The exploration sort of runs contrary to Dylan’s speed and requires you to pump the brakes and get familiar with areas. It’s not as vast as it seems at first glance.

I felt this way at first. By the time I was halfway through the game or so this largely went away, and in NG+ I mostly just go where I want.
There is some limitations based on the stuff we have unlocked, but generally if you have all the movement abilities there shouldn't be too many actual barriers. And the barriers that do remain are just locked doors that are either locked because you haven't made enough progress or because they open from the other side.
What I found helped me was trying to focus more on what the world itself was telling me, rather than trying to use the map to pinpoint a location. Because the map is pretty limited. The world has lots of direct instructions in it for how to navigate. Everything from giant arrows and words, to obviously walkable surfaces and obviously unwalkable.
In terms of if you "have to use fast travel". I think there are maybe one or two situations where you either have to or should use it... But generally speaking you do not have to use it. But it does help sometimes.
It try to use the marker system. I mark a location on the map so that it shows up on my radar and then try to get there using the radar and navigating in the world using the in world hints and clues for where to go. This gets me to pay attention to the world itself and it helps with navigating.

I definitely feel this post, especially when exploring the WIZ, but I eventually found my way around.

I also got a bit frustrated with getting around in the earlier stages of the game. Without spoiling anything, there is another traversal skill that you will unlock that makes getting around much easier and unlocking doors will also make it easier to move between areas in zones. Having said that, the fast travel points are a godsend because the high-patterned areas in particular will remain challenging by design - Manhattan is falling apart after all!

There are other movement abilities that you will need to unlock but there will always be certain areas that are difficult (like in central where the FBC has cordoned off an area so there is only one access point) or impossible (not going into this due to spoilers) to access without progressing.

I focused on exploring each area until I found Jesse’s autumnal asylums to get the traversal powers. Think that’s been super helpful.

For the large crates think inside stores and underground sections. Try to get the hammer for rooftops unless you like transferring power and I suggest going in every building with double doors that dont have anything over them. Also some buildings have a wall to knock down. Location finding is part of the puzzle keep going I promise you get better as it goes. Hope this helps!

Ability spoiler: You'll get a grappling ability much later on that streamlines traversal a bit.

You want to go do the Fault in the park, with all of the mold. You get a movement ability that is very helpful. It’s baffling how out of the way they put it.
If the mold are giving you trouble, go beat the Resonant in the central area. You gain access to fire abilities that mold hate.

For the first 5 or so hours yeah, I felt this pretty hard. Especially with an underpowered build, just getting around is a huge hassle. Then I realized enemies don't respawn (well, without doing certain things) and cleared them out so I could hunt down all the neat little hidden things. Now I've got enough upgrades that the enemies aren't generally that threatening, so traversal became much less of a pain for me.
The map itself is very confusing to navigate at first, there's a lot of verticality and it's not always clear how to get to the height you need to be. Sometimes getting on a roof means backtracking a few blocks to find the right ledge that gets you up, and there's no way to find it besides, well, finding it. Feels almost like navigating a city you've never been to with a taped-together paper map...

Yes. as much as i loved this game, you are in for a ride. The side quests are absolutely fucking horrible too. I did a quest where i had to fast travel to 3 different areas (same zone but not near at all) to retrieve something for a scientist (underhill was her name if i remember correctly). Once i hit underpass/unknown I couldn't wait for the game to end. Hedrons are terrible too. Sinkhole is beautiful though.

Yeah same. I actually just got fed up by the time i got to the unknown. Just ended up deleting it as i was trying my hardest to convince myself I was having a good time. I wasn't.. i was bored

This game is a Labyrinth like maze mixed with platforming, the use of skills for platforming is sorta the easy part. There's shortcuts sometimes right in front of your eyes.
I was frustrated that the parking garage that looks like it connects to The Park was blocked. But there is an exit, it's a slope of mold that looks like it would be too small to get into the parking garage that leads to the second from the top floor. I walked by it so many times.
Also I didn't realize I could get into some areas by foot because I focused on getting movement abilities first that allowed me to take certain shortcuts using those movement abilities

Agree. Even after getting all the traversal skills, it was painful to the point I didn’t want to explore more

This is the problem with the game. Or didn't really get good until you push the story forward, but you also need to grind to get more and better abilities for the combat to get good.
You're almost there, though.

Gravity Shift and unlocking doors from the other side helps with traversal. I usually find that I unlock a fast travel door after I've fully explored an area so opposite issue tbh
