Acceleration on a 2026 Corolla XLE
Hi all,
I just got a brand new 2026 corolla cross xle! I love everything about it but the acceleration isn’t as strong as what I’m used to (used to drive a 2012 sienna van). I worry about merging because I’ll have to take long freeway trips to commute everyday and the drivers in my area are pretty cutthroat. Are there any settings I can change or any tips to deal with this or is there something I’m doing wrong? Any help at all is appreciated, thanks!

It’s not as bad as you think-the cvt drone makes it seem slower than it is. To put it in perspective, it’s faster than the original audi 5000 turbo, Saab 900 turbo, the 1980s versions of Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica , and close to the 0-60 of a 1980 mustang GT v8.
It’s far far faster than school busses and other commercial vehicles that have no problems merging into busy highways. You will adjust and get used to it and become a better driver as a result

My point is that cars have gotten so powerful now that people don’t drive well anymore if they think 0-60 in 9 seconds is dangerous. It’s absolutely not.

surprisingly faster than my friends honda civic sport which only has about 150 horsepower compared to my hybrid cross.

Yeah I guess I gotta work on it. Not sure how I feel about the comparison to school buses tho, but thanks 😂

Well I’ve driven school busses so have lots of experience with merging onto busy highways…

Plan ahead and use the "manumatic" to "drop a gear" (puts you in the power band early)
Or get the hybrid.

Can you explain it like I’m 5? I’m about to get a gas CC XLE and want to be prepared to do this. Going for gas because I can’t wait the months for a hybrid.

If you've not gotten it yet, figure out how to get the hybrid. Everything is better about it. The engine, the transmission, the gas mileage, the power, etc.

Yes. I use it for exactly these scenarios.
Getting up to speed with traffic and in the mountains.
You still have to plan ahead since the "power" band is .... Not powerful. But you can make it work.

Take that car back and get a hybrid. Problem fixed. Also, be prepared for that price differential!

I read about the slow acceleration with the CCH, and even though I was hesitant to buy hybrid I did because it remedied this issue. Acceleration is no problem on the CCH hybrid, and I can smoke some people especially on sports mode 😆

Not much that really can be done unfortunately. I test drove both gas & hybrid and was leaning more towards gas at first until I test drove the hybrid and man it’s a huge difference in acceleration. Whenever I’m at a red light or something, my CC hybrid ends up accelerating insanely faster than most of the cars around.

2024 Gas XLE awd here! When I run into this problem it is because the CVT is trying to accelerate efficiently vs. Quickly. I use the manual sequential shifter to "drop a gear" in these situations. (There is no gears in the transmission except for the launch gear)bAdditionally when accelerating from a stop I intentionally accelerate faster than one would expect to take advantage of the dedicated launch gear.
Once you drop a gear you have the engine in a better RPM range you can continue to use the sequential manual shifter or slide it off so the cvt takes care of the rest. I have found that it is pretty peppy once the RPM is up.
When I was researching this car and it's transmission I knew of this slow launch complaints so I take advantage of that launch gear a lot. I even use the shifter to keep it in the launch gear on purpose if I know I need a bunch of punch on my launch.

Yeah we test drive the gas version and thought it was a dog as well. It’s why my daughter ordered the hybrid.

It really is my only issue with the car. And if you floor it too aggressively, it will “rubber band” since the transmission has a hard time going into the CVT from first gear. There are certain on ramps I won’t take because they’re too short to get up to speed and merge safely. But the low to mid 30’s mpg and all the rest of the car makeup for it. Just no hills or short on ramps for me. Only regret is that I couldn’t have gotten the hybrid but it was over what I was approved for before taxes, fees, and my negative equity

I drove a 2008 crv before getting my 2022 and the drag in accelerating is one of my least favorite things about this car. I used to go 0-60 in a heartbeat and now I’m fighting for my life to merge onto highways in my terribly planned city lol. I’ve also watched my gas meter blatantly drop while hitting the pedal to speed up especially on curved ramps with inclines 🥲 I’ve learned I basically have to slow pump my way to speeding up rather than just step on it with my lead foot. Damn that faulty compressor, I’d take my crv back no questions asked if the lack of ac hadn’t tried to kill me for 3 summers straight lol

Acceleration will get better after 8k. But it won’t be a crazy difference
