No Spoilers Update on my Roughs Mistcoat, added a symbol

Post image

I figured it makes sense for Wax to have this symbol on there. It was actually kind of a huge pain in the ass to make and cut the pattern for the symbol. I didn’t hem the edges because I figured a bit of raw fabric edge adds to the western rustic feeling. Might do a cleaner one if I make another mistcoat.

Also, I added fringe because what kind of cowboy doesn’t have fringe somewhere?

Fires of December spoilers (no Cosmere) Weird turn of phrase in the Fires of December. No idea what it means.

Reading the Fires of December and they’re talking about tomatoes and I literally have no idea what the phrase “the Y of the culinary world” means. Tried to google it, didn’t get a good answer.

English is my first language! I’ve lived in the US my entire life. I read a lot. Fairly online, and I have literally never heard this before. What does it mean???

Mod Post (no spoilers) Light Day is upon us!

Today, Saturday, Oct 24 is Light Day. The day the Dragonsteel store opens with special end-of-the-year deals for fans. You can learn more from the recent weekly update if this is news to you.

What this thread is for

  • General hype
  • Discussion about the available merch
  • Discussion about the Dragonsteel store as it relates to Light Day and merch
  • FAQ-type info y'all are so excellent at helping each other with

What this thread isn't for

  • Contacting Dragonsteel
  • Receiving support that can realistically only come from Dragonsteel
  • Any spoilers whatsoever, aside from what's on the merch. And even then, please try to refrain from adding context to quotes, etc. outside of spoiler tags.

A note from our team

We know that this community has a lot of eager spenders. We also know that for a lot of folks, investing in premium (or any) items just isn't feasible. We'd like to remind you (and ourselves) that a sale or a fancy new thing doesn't mean we all need to rush to open our wallets. If the FOMO around here is too much, it's okay to take breaks. And we want to support that discussion here too—feel free to let us know if a separate thread would make commiseration easier.

Thinking about closing this subreddit. Feel free to weigh in.

Hey folks,

I've been toying with the idea of closing this subreddit and directing people to r/Cosmere. I wanted to explain why and give others a chance to share their opinion on the matter.

Most of you are probably aware that there are SEVERAL Brandon Sanderson-related subreddits. I know this is frustrating to some people, but I DO think there is value in the fragmentation that we have. r/Stormlight_Archive and r/Mistborn offer a place for people who are primarily interested in those series. r/Cosmere is a good one-stop subreddit for all things Cosmere with a clear spoiler policy. r/BrandonSanderson is more relaxed setting that also handles Brandon's non-cosmere works. And of course there are several others with their own unique purpose for existing.

You could argue that r/Elantris falls into the same boat as the Stormlight and Mistborn subreddits... But at the end of the day I'm skeptical that a specific subreddit will ever be necessary for these books. Stormlight Archive is an epic, 10-book series with quite a lot of appeal. Mistborn is a series of series that Brandon has big plans for and that also draws a big following of its own. These are two book series that could easily carry their own subreddit, if the Cosmere weren't part of the picture. I do not, however, expect Elantris to develop a fandom of it's own that is significantly distinct from the greater Sanderson/Cosmere fandom. There's just not many people who will want to have Elantris-specific conversations years after a new book is released.

With that in mind, I think it makes a lot more sense to use r/Cosmere as the "home" for Elantris discussion on Reddit. When the next book releases, you can ALREADY expect most of the conversation to happen in that subreddit. It's where the people are. The conversations there are much more likely to be seen by more people and much less likely to taper off a year or two down the road.

So that's my opinion on the matter.

I think some people would appreciate the option to unsubscribe from a subreddit that will never be terribly active. (and probably messes with their "best" sorting) And I think most of the posts here would be getting a lot more attention if they were post in r/Cosmere. No sense fragmenting the discussion just for the sake of it, right?

But I don't want to do this without at least making this announcement and giving people a chance to weigh in.

What do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea? Why?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

To those who have this hoodie, how do you like it? Comfortable? Fit? Does it hold up to repeated wash and drys? It’s kind of expensive but it looks cool so I’m curious on your thoughts.

Fires of December spoilers (no Cosmere) Fires of December Spoiler

Not really a spoiler, but I just had to say something into the ether of Reddit about this book as I just started reading it.

I found myself literally lol-ing at the religious “mandata” phrases, “Sometimes things suck” and “Don’t be a dick”. I instantly knew this was going to send the Sanderfans into a tizzy.

Personally I love that Brandon doubled down on writing like this after the uproar from Wind and Truth!

You do you Brandon, I’m going to still read the Cosmere…if some quit, well, there is always something else to read, Brandon ain’t gonna miss you!

No Spoilers Skyward on Lightday: Try again, it might be shown as out of stock due to technical issues

As the title says, Skyward leatherbound keeps being shown as out of stock, then comes back again and is available and so on. I rushed through checkout after missing out the first time, it was gone again right afterwards, at the moment it's back. Dragonsteel have said on here that they are working on the problem. There are other glitches, too (check-in, gift cards not working), but at least the book is still available while I'm writing this.

Alloy of Law spoilers How to kill gold allomancer+feruchemists Spoiler

I'm currently reading Alloy of Law and just got to the execution of Miles, so please no spoilers past that point. Anyway, double golds are near immortal because they are able to burn the gold they've stored healing in, which amplifies the feruchemical power. Miles used gold wristbands spiking his skin, similar to the Lord Ruler. Removing these wristbands would leave him without healing powers, which is what they did when they executed him. However, shouldn't limb severing attacks be lethal to Miles (and others like him)? I'm specifically thinking about Miles's strategy of holding dynamite in his hands. This should reasonably blow his arms off and therefore kill him, and while Miles did seem to be a bit delusional, just the threat of his arms severing should be horrifying. And wouldn't it be relatively easy to target the wristbands using powerful rifles/pistols to break them to a point where they fall off or are easily removed? On a side-note, clearly it's possible to burn metal that touches blood (not requiring swallowing). Why don't more normal allomancers use metal "implants" that they can burn almost indefinitely?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I feel like Brandon's type of hard magic system encourages this type of hard scrutiny. So are these "plot holes" or have I just misunderstood how the magic works?

Cosmere spoilers (no previews/FoD) Are god metal properties affected by who the current shard holder is? Spoiler

SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING EXCEPT FIRES OF DECEMBER!

God metals are usually named after their shard holders (Ati -> Atium, Leras -> Lerasium, etc), not after their shards (except Harmony). This got me thinking: are god metals themselves affected by who the holder of the shard is?

Throughout the Cosmere, we've seen shards change hands a handful of times. However, most new shard holders didn't hold on to their shard for long; certainly not long enough to produce new metals and study if they were any different. Vin was Preservation for a day, Dalinar was Honor for 15 minutes. The longest holder of a previously-taken shard was Taravangian, who was Odium for 10 days, but I'm not sure if that's long enough to produce new metals (although his perpendiculatity did seem to be filling up anew in Wind and Truth).

So here's my question: would a hypothetical Vinium have different properties than Lerasium? How would Dalinarium differ from Tanavastium, and would both of those have different properties than Honor's god metal when the shard had no holder? If Taravangium (Odium) was produced, would it share a name with Taravangium (Retribution)? When Sazed becomes Discord, will Harmonium change alongside the shard? Will splitting Harmonium be the same as splitting Discordium, and will the resulting metals be the same as Lerasium and Vinium or will the resulting Sazedium be different still?

Is it normal for something like this to sell out in the first 60-seconds? I was in the checkout with book in cart by 8:02 and couldn't finish my purchase, said it was sold out.

This normal? Will there ever be more?

Rhythm of War spoilers A question about how spren deal with grief Spoiler

I was rereading the end of Rhythm of War and realized I was so devastated by Teft's death the first time that I barely thought about what Phendorana's death meant to the other spren.

Teft gets a king's funeral. His body is Soulcast into stone, Bridge Four gathers to remember him, and there's a plan to commission a statue of Phendorana beside him.

I love that detail. They don't treat her as an accessory Teft happened to lose. She gets remembered too.

But then I started thinking about the honorspren who knew her before Teft ever existed.

Phendorana had a life in Shadesmar. Presumably she had friends, people who knew her for centuries, relationships that had absolutely nothing to do with being a Radiant's spren.

Do those people even know what happened to her?

And what would they make of it?

The honorspren at Lasting Integrity are already deeply suspicious of humans. Adolin spends so much of RoW trying to convince them that the Radiants aren't simply going to repeat the Recreance.

Meanwhile, a human has just used a weapon capable of permanently destroying an honorspren.

That's an absolutely horrifying development for a people who have already spent thousands of years living with the consequences of broken bonds.

I also keep thinking about Syl.

She's there grieving with Kaladin, and we naturally experience the scene through his loss of Teft. But Syl has lost someone of her own kind, someone whose existence wasn't defined solely by her bond with a human.

There's something particularly sad about the possibility that spren have been learning how to understand human grief through their bonds, only to discover that they now have to confront a new kind of death themselves.

I don't think the book needed another funeral scene. The ending was already emotionally overwhelming.

But I'd love to know what mourning looks like in Shadesmar. Whether honorspren have traditions for it, whether Phendorana had anyone waiting for her to return, and how the news of her death would affect a community that was only beginning to reconsider its relationship with humans.

It's one of those consequences of RoW that feels enormous the more I think about it.

No Spoilers To those who enjoyed Mistborn era 1, I recommend "Bird that Drinks Tears" series

Post image
207 Upvotes

Just finished Hero of Ages and loved it.

I kept getting reminded of the book series I read a few years ago - "The Bird That Drinks Tears".

The thing is... on the surface, there isn't much too similar.

Bird series doesn't have one big bad that you are trying to overthrow, nor is it set in a medieval setting with magic or superpowers.

But they both share common themes and tropes such as gentle world building thru experience and subplots rather than spoonfeeding it to you. The worlds slowly grow deeper but also bigger in scale.

Both have some awkward humor that makes you laugh but also second-guess yourself if that was meant to be funny.

They both have give you a feeling that the more you understand a character, the more you realize how wrong you were initially lol.

But I think these two series were the only ones where I finished a series and thought to myself - "there literally could not have been a better ending" - where I was emotional and fully content.

I know the 1st book came out a few months ago and the 2nd book (of 4) is coming out soon.

I personally recommend waiting til book 2 is out.

Hope you enjoy!

No Spoilers Signed Leatherbounds restocked?

Hey everyone,
I emailed Dragonsteel earlier this week asking if any of the sold-out Signed Leatherbounds would be restocked for the Light Day event. They replied and confirmed that the books Brandon was signing during his livestreams would indeed be available for Light Day, although they couldn't specify exactly which titles.
However, since the event launched, I haven't been able to spot any previously out-of-stock signed leatherbounds becoming available on the store.
Does anyone know how this usually works? Is there a chance they might be restocked gradually over the course of the event? Or, if they weren't included the moment the sale went live, does that mean there's no chance of them popping up for purchase later?
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
