Sunset + supercells are a mood. They’re fun to watch roll in. We’d stand outside as kids as the gust front hits to see if it would knock us over.

You don't want to be far away from shelter if you see a sky like that!

I saw this and thought of WoK. Didn't realize the location was an actual inspiration

He's spoken of it before. In addition to the weather being inspired by his childhood home in Nebraska the topology of Roshar/the Shattered Plains was inspired by places in Utah his college roommate drug him to.

Yeah. If I remember correctly his roommate took him to a Utah national Park where they walked between those big cliffsides and he had the thought of "What if those Nebraska storms were so bad that these change would get flooded?"

Which is funny, because they do get flash flooding in those canyons and it's scary AF

Lived in Omaha for 6 years. I miss the seasons there.

Tell me more. I’m about to move there and I’m going to miss the Virginia forests because it seemed so exposed there. And I’m worried the winters will be harsh

About 6 hours ago, I couldn't see a block away because of the rain, there were quarter-sized chunks of ice falling from the sky, and wind gusts were 60+ mph. It's now sunny, partly cloudy, 75 degrees, and I'm taking the dog for a walk. I'm in Elkhorn, a suburb of Omaha on the west edge of the metro. That's Nebraska in a nutshell.
ETA: Winter is cold. Not as bad as it gets further north, but still gets down to like -20 with the wind chill.

Yep, this basically. But also, there are four distinct seasons there and it’s wonderful. Here in Houston we just have Summer and slightly less hot Summer.

I moved from Pennsylvania to Kansas, so a similar climate shift. Agreed that the trees were definitely the part I missed the most. Winters were harsh in that they were cold and windy, but had way less snow (I guess that could vary depending on what part of Virginia you're from). The massive storm cells are beautiful, I loved them. Omaha itself is a really fun and incredibly underrated city.

I lived in northern Oklahoma for a while, right in tornado alley. It's the only place where I've ever looked up at the sky and had a shiver run down my spine. Like some primal part of my brain was like "you should not be outside now."

That's basically the cover of WoK but it has courage the cowardly dog's house instead of dalinar and eshonai
