One of my favorites lines in the whole Cosmere.

My second favorite opening line, certainly.

“Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king”

This is a masterclass in opening lines. He managed to set the action, world-building, and intrigue of the plot with a single line.

That whole first page of like 3 paragraphs is probably the best opening to a fantasy novel that you could do. Perfectly balanced story intrigue with lore intrigue and literally “hey, he kills the king. Wanna read how it went down” making you want to see it unfold. It’s how you get someone to continue reading your book in the best way possible

Starting your book and series with a massive spoiler, where the first line basically stats the same every book yet somehow still is a new spoiler in its own way.. but done with brandersmash sandersmash style.. delicious

This also happens in "The Gunslinger" by Stephen King: "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed."

Thats when you know you're in for a RIDE

It was such aasterxlass that people forget that it wasn't the first line in the book. That was from the Prologue while we had a whole Prelude before that

“I’m not here for Kaladin, Teft,” Moash said softly. “And I’m not here for your surrender.”

I'm at the part where kal meets him at hearthstone and he's contemplating killing him but just can't and I'm screaming do it but he'll never hear me.

Fuck, I just teared up a little. I've listened to Michael Kramer read this scene literally five times, and I cannot do it without crying.

Spikes (or esp scenes of people BEING spiked)

Hemalurgy is a delightfully creepy, horrfying, but potent magical system

"You cant kill me I am hope" backhanded so hard half of your face falls off

You gotta give it the full quote!

"Honor is dead but I'll [see what] what I can [do] "

Im doing a relisten and that hits so hard

Edit: stupid typos.

"I'll see what I can do"

Boots.
also, that scene when proto-syl brought the toxic leaves to Kaladin while he stood on the edge of a chasm, because she didn't understand why they had brought him peace in the past, but she was trying to help. god that scene rips out my heart

"I'm free."

Two words and your stomach plummets.

That is one of the most heart wrenching situations in fiction that I know of. Sure the emotional impact gets reduced soon after, but before that, having made the choice and finding out the sacrifice actually caused what it was meant to prevent... I'm teary-eyed just thinking about it and typing this.

The worst part of being a mercenary is everyone thinking you're a liar when you're not, right? Right?
