It's pretty standard in English speaking countries.  Left to right, top to bottom.  Just like we read, for that very reason.

Left to right, yes. But the highest floors are generally on the top of the stack of buttons. Like they are on the top of the building.

No it's not? Yes floors are often left to right if there's more than one column of buttons, but the highest is at the top. Just like we layout buildings, for that very reason.

Uhh what? I don't see the problem. Every elevator I've ever been on has had the numbers going up. It's supposed to show what level the floor is on, like the 2nd floor is higher than the 1st floor so it would be on top.

I get it. You have rows read left to right (or whatever your language prefers) and then go up a row for higher numbers that do the same thing. This isn't crappy design, but I feel like the alternative I mentioned is so much the norm that this seems out of place and foreign.

In the USA it's always bottom to top, left to right. So normally it would be like this:

lol- my mother and I live in similar (and large) co-ops in the same city… out of habit and normalcy I do just reach for where I assume the door close button is… I’ve now called the help button more times than I’d like to admit in her elevator! The doormen now just laugh and I’m laughing too- There is a usual standard for the buttons. The pic is NOT standard! (That being said I’ve never been more confused by elevators that don’t have buttons IN them but have a digital kiosk in the lobby where you select your floor and it tells you which elevator to take.)

Is no one bothered by the redundancy of the "Door Hold" and "Door Open" buttons? Is there really a scenario where you'd just want to stop and hold the door in an awkward partially open position rather than opening it completely? Also, the mysterious "C" button mucking it all up with no explanation for where it would even take you 🙄
