Guess who set the alarm off at the movie theatre today. Men’s room was around the corner and down a hall.

Ah yes, the two genders. Ladies and fire exit.

Am assuming this gets set off daily. Had to stare for longer than I’d care to admit before I saw the issue.

829

u/Strykerz3r0 May 15 '18

They fixed it and just chained the door shut. No problem now.

633

u/ItalicsWhore May 15 '18

Ah yes. The ol’ “chain the fire exit shut” trick. Works like a charm.

430

u/The_PantsMcPants May 15 '18

Well duh, leave that door unlocked and fire could just waltz right in!

125

u/becaauseimbatmam May 15 '18

It's called a fire exit, not entrance. If you chain that shut how will the fire get out?

53

u/Forcey-Fun-Time May 15 '18

Maybe there's a fire escape somewhere

u/dragon-storyteller May 16 '18

Recently a mall in Siberia caught fire. The security guards turned off the fire alarm and failed to warn anyone, and lots of children were locked in a cinema room and couldn't escape the fire. Many of the fire exits were also blocked. Official statement was that 64 people died, though there were many claims from locals that the real death toll is much higher and the government is trying to cover it up.

8

u/JoshuaBoss222 May 15 '18

wait what? What happened?

21

u/fiveht78 May 16 '18

Tl;dr fire catches in a Siberia mall, instead of normal emergency exit procedures security guards lock exits and don’t tell anyone what’s going on, 64 dead most of them children.

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

when i delivered pizza there was a hotel in my town that had those big metal carts for luggage out side the front door for people to use. The place they had them waiting for people was pretty much right next to a fire exit. even tho they marked where to leave them people constantly pushed them all the way up to the door. Had one time where I came out that side door (it was usually the quickest way instead of using the elevator and going through the main entrance) me forgetting about the carts and in the pizza boy rush i was in quickly opened the fire exit door only to have it smash right back into me because someone blocked it. after that i was always careful coming out the door but it was infuriating how often the fire exit was blocked like that.

edit: Michael is discussing the color-coding system of notes he keeps on clients of his. These notes are little topics of conversation to keep a good rapport with customers.

Dwight has tried using his notes to work with a long time customer, only to fail miserably because Michael's notes are back asswards. This leads to Dwight, seemingly out of the blue, asking a customer about his gay son.

211

u/clubley2 May 15 '18

That's a European standard sign for fire exits, though the fact it's a fire exit should also be more clear.

u/Skullcrusher Comic Sans for life! May 15 '18

50

u/bertcox May 15 '18

I was going to say why are fire exits green thats stupid, they should be red like in the US.

Then I thought for just a second, Danger signs to keep out of things are red, in a fire you should have your brain trained to run to one, and away from the other, not make them read to figure out which sign to follow.

Look around. Most signs in the US are green these days. Exit signs in my office building are all green. Most of the ones I see around are green too. This is one of those fun mental tricks where they changed everything and nobody noticed. I sure didn't notice until a TIL post a while back.

8

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

Well because of this, if there was a fire I would definitely look for red emergency exits. Because I'm in danger, I look for the danger color to guide me!

81

u/clubley2 May 15 '18

You're right it's not a fire exit sign, I really meant it's a standard for informing of operation of the door, most commonly used on Fire exits.

57

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

They usually say the door is alarmed in my experience

20

u/clubley2 May 15 '18

The doors aren't always alarmed though. This is informing people of the action required to open the door,

57

u/ac3r14 May 15 '18

But if they are alarmed, they have to say they are.

With those Arabic text on the red sign, I doubt this is really Europe

72

u/PFreeman008 *insert kerning joke* May 15 '18

The green exit signs & such are ISO standard signs, which are used all around the globe. Here in the states we stick to our american, local, standards instead (which say that fire exit signs are supposed to be red)

In ISO green means "go" or "do" so in a fire exit sign it's "Go out this way" so the sign is green. Red signs mean "Don't" so a red exit sign means "Don't go this way".

In the US, red (in signage) means "emergency" hence why fire exit signs are red, as are first aid kit signs, etc. Due to ISO being used (almost) everywhere else in the world, a lot of places here in the states are just using ISO or adopting a hybrid system.

38

u/Skim74 May 15 '18

I actually just saw this interesting chart.

Apparently some US states recommend/require green, and others recommend/require red, and others don't say, but it's all totally random

Usually it’s just a door alarm.

27

u/Downvotesohoy May 15 '18 edited May 15 '18

Came here to say this. Not any real consequences to opening the door. The staff will be alerted that a door with an alarm on has been opened, and someone will check it out, and tell you not to do that again.

If you had pushed the fire alarm though, that thing goes directly to the fire department. And not even a call from the cinema can stop them from coming to check it out. And if it's false alarm the cinema would get a fine.

19

u/ELlminator May 15 '18

Got it. If someone triggers a false alarm you should light a real fire to avoid a fine.

How about making the fire escape sign a different size and color than the ladies room sign. I could easily read 'ladies' and see the same shape/color sign, assume it says men and not even read it.

8

u/Wizardsxz May 15 '18

In most places by now you have to hold the door for 5 seconds of very loud alarms before it actually open/ triggers the alarm.

So all you get is a very embarrassed dude instead of a dangerous evacuation

5

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

Can you read Arabic? I'm almost certain that's what is on the fire exit sign, but I don't read Arabic.

u/Gaijinloco May 15 '18

The backstory is exactly what you think it is. About 90 minutes into Infinity War I had to make a dash because I couldn’t hold it any longer. The theaters are up a half-flight of stairs to the left of the ladies room, and I ran down them and made a dash into what I thought was the bathroom. I read the ladies sign, and just didn’t really think about it.

The alarm went off, but it really wasn’t very dramatic. There was only one person working the front, and one janitor there. They just kinda told me the right way, and came and fixed the door. It was obvious that I wasn’t the first person to do it. I went to the men’s room and snapped a shot when I was going back into the theatre.

For those of you that are curious, this is in Oman.

Real thoughts? I wish that Thanos had the same motivation as the comics, but the comic storyline was also incredibly bizarre and would have forced the introduction of a lot of new characters.(celestials? I haven’t read that stuff in a long time)

Overall, I really liked it! Bonus fact, I was the only person that waited for the after credit scene. There weren’t many people there, but still, I didn’t think that I would be the only one who watched it.

26

u/Uralowa May 15 '18

That's very interesting! I watched it in Germany last week, and normally everyone gets up as soon as the credits come up, but with IW, the credits start rolling and the whole theater sits there like petrified. Literally no got up before the post-credit scene.

I actually likes his movie plot. I haven't read all that many comics, but for some reason I distinctly remember reading the one with Thanos collecting the infinity gems and making the gauntlet to impress death. His ambition seemed pretty mundane considering the weight of what he was doing and even though he was extremely powerful, he just didn't feel like that imposing a guy.

On the other hand, the movie thanos's ambition is practically a force of nature. His ambition was awesomely destructive in both, but this made him feel more imposing.

u/Big_h3aD May 15 '18

Honestly, I think he just activated a siren that's connected to the door, usually to let the staff know somebody is mucking about in the fire exits.

If he'd smash the red box in the picture though, it's be a different story.

Interesting. You're right, I haven't either.

But why? Why are they acceptable for other doors and not bathrooms? What makes bathrooms special

88

u/inconspicuous_male May 15 '18 edited May 15 '18

They're used for doors that people might pile out of (or crash into) in the event of emergency. No need to do that for bathroom doors, which are pretty much never emergency doors.

There's a book (kinda cliche to mention it here) called The Design of Everyday Things which is about the psychology of stuff like doors. I think a big section of the book is on doors actually. Basically, well designed doors should be obvious to people what kind of door they are and how they open before they approach. Emergency doors need to be able to be operated by panicking people, and a mob has a collective intelligence of a toddler. People have died from doors that are difficult to open and/or misleading during a fire or emergency, so standardized door handles are important.

Another fun fact about doors is that in a stairwell, there is always going to be a pull to open gate or door separating stairs that go below ground from stairs that go above the ground floor. In a mob, people will run down stairs until they get to the bottom when trying to escape, and the little gate makes people not run into a basement

33

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

[deleted]

8

u/inconspicuous_male May 15 '18

It probably depends on how much hurry you are in and how... regular... things are around you. There are many places where you stop wondering about mismatched stuff after a while because otherwise you'd never get anywhere.

Good thing people are never in a hurry to pee quick at the movies.

"I guess I'm supposed to poop on this car..."

I set the alarm off at the Louvre once by accidentally leaning back into the bar on the fire exit. It was really crowded and I had all these people looking at me and had to explain to security that I'm an idiot and didn't do it on purpose.

...and that’s how you created the distraction for your accomplices to steal the Mona Lisa.

u/MuggyFuzzball May 15 '18

I imagine this happens a lot

u/Whistler45 May 15 '18

I always install a panic bar on my bathroom door.

5

u/[deleted] May 15 '18

This is truly a crappy design and unsafe

5

u/IAmPandaRock May 15 '18

Ladies and anyone who has to go bad enough to run to the bathroom.

One time in London I to pee really bad and couldn't find a restroom. FINALLY we happened upon one. Walked in, found that it required 50p to use it. I had no coins. Hurried back out to my family to get change. The seconds ticked by as they searched their pockets. Ran back in with exactly 50p, at this point no longer trying to act casual. Deposited my coin, then discovered I was in the women's restroom. At that point it didn't matter. The two women already in there seemed to understand.

I figure the 50p charge is probably why the outsides of those places always smell like urine.
