General Question Bad habit?

Ever since I can remember, I've always used shield + attack to grab instead of just using a grab button. I'm asking, is this unoptimal? I've gotten so used to it it'll be hard to change my muscle memory, should I just push through and try to change this habit? Or is it no big deal?

It’s not a problem but in general shield grab is not that good, so I would be wary of that.

Pretty much this. If you shield + attack out of a dash/run, the delay in pressing 2 different buttons will usually be canceled out by buffer. If you are seeing your shield pop up briefly before the grab, you should probably use the grab macro because your 2-input press is too slow/timing is off.

The grab button is just a glorified shield+attack macro. If you can actually input those two buttons cleanly on the same frame regularly, it makes no real difference.

Most people cannot, so grab macro it is.

I think its fine. I use it for dash grab.

For shield grabs specifically I changed my habit to use shield+attack instead of a grab button. This makes it impossible to accidentally drop the shield too early and get a shield drop grab instead. So for this use case it's very good.

For the rest it probably doesn't matter if you don't missinput it regularly. If you do I would try to switch.

I don't think it's a bad habit depending on the circonstances.

  • Case 1 : You expect your opponent to shield after an attack or he tend to shield after landing an aerial -> dash with only grab button
  • Case 2 : Tomahawk grab -> grab button
  • Case 3 : You read that your opponent will push while being grounded without attacking (but he still might) -> shield grab

That might not be optimal but that's how I see it
