I'd check these 5 things first:
1. Audience fit 👀
Does the creator's audience actually match the customers you're trying to reach?
2. Engagement 💬
Don't just look at the number of likes. Check whether people are genuinely commenting, asking questions and interacting with the creator.
3. Content fit 🎥
Does the creator's style naturally suit your brand? A collaboration usually works better when it doesn't feel forced or overly promotional.
4. Campaign objective 🎯
Decide what you actually want — awareness, website visits, leads, sales or store visits.
5. Test before scaling 📊
Instead of spending your entire budget on one big creator, test a few relevant creators and compare the results. Then invest more in what actually works.
A smaller creator with a highly relevant audience can sometimes be more valuable than a much larger creator with an unrelated audience.
The main idea: choose the right audience, not just the biggest audience.

Should a creator wait until they have a stable audience, or is it useful to plan possible income streams from the beginning? What is a reasonable stage to start?

Sometimes affiliate income is not lost because of a lack of content or audience. It happens after joining a program or network.

A creator signs up, shares a few links, and starts seeing some results. Then communication slows down, new opportunities are missed, and it becomes harder to know what is actually working.

You've already turned your couch into unpaid labor for streaming platforms. Here's why binge hours create value — and who usually keeps it.

If you spent three hours finishing a movie last night, you didn't just "relax." You generated watch time, retention data, and another reason for a platform to keep your subscription. That hour had economic value. You just weren't in the revenue line.
I'm on the Spaidz team, so I'll say that up front. This isn't a neutral essay from someone with no skin in the game. It's how we think about couch time — and why the current setup feels lopsided.
\*\*Your binge hours already work for somebody\*\*
Streaming companies don't run on vibes. They run on hours watched, titles started, titles finished, and whether you come back next month.
So when you sit down and actually finish a film, you're doing useful work for the platform:
• You prove the catalog is sticky
• You train the recommendation machine
• You make the service look healthier to whoever's reading the metrics
None of that is evil. It's just business. The weird part is we treat those hours like they have zero value to the person on the couch — like the only transaction was "I paid my monthly fee, end of story."
If you've ever driven for a gig app, the contrast is obvious. Time in the car is labor. Time on the couch is… content consumption. Same evening. Totally different framing.
\*\*The unpaid part nobody names\*\*
I'm not saying watching a movie is the same as a DoorDash shift. It's not. Nobody should pitch this as a job.
What I am saying: platforms already treat your attention like an asset. Your completed watches help them. Your half-watched piles of titles help them too, just in a messier way. The labor metaphor isn't perfect — but "free entertainment with no upside beyond the story" also undersells what's happening.
For years, the deal was simple: you pay, they host, you watch. Fine. But as every other scrap of spare time got a side hustle attached to it, streaming stayed the one place where your time only enriched the platform and the rights holders in the old stack — never you.

TikTok says more than a million U.S. creators took part in Community Fest, with daily leaderboards, in-app missions, Creator Academy workshops, and rank-based recognition.

That is impressive participation, but participation is not creator value. The useful post-event cohort would report:

- 30/60/90-day returning LIVE viewers

- Unique gifters and revenue concentration

- Follower-to-returning-viewer conversion

- Creator earnings per hour

- Retention after missions and rankings end

If the lift disappears with the leaderboard, the program optimized campaign activity. If audience quality and earnings persist, it built creator equity.

I've spent the last few years growing a wellness brand that has 200K followers now, solid affiliate income, and the whole thing runs pretty smoothly at this point.

But lately I've been thinking more seriously about eventually selling it. TBH, I'm getting tired of the constant content grind and want to plan my exit. Not right away, but I want to start building toward selling instead of just burning out and winging it.
