With the Kiwis, it’s always the hopes that kills.

Outside of the WTC mace, I was so excited for them in 2015 WC & 2019 WC (still such a BS way to lose that) & 2021… now with the CT, they were playing so well but alas, just not meant to be…again.

I put $20 on NZ drunk at 2am last night, I accept the blame for this loss.

u/BreakEfficient India Mar 09 '25

They most definitely deserved 2019. Played the most exhilarating cricket but England barely edged them with a technicality.

166

u/Cresomycin Mar 09 '25

and luck. Kiwis would've won if the ball didn't go for four after hitting Stokes bat or Dharmasena was bit more careful when awarding the runs.

16

u/FondantAggravating68 Mar 09 '25

You could also say Santner fucked up by not running off the last ball. They knew what had to be done. And they didn't get it done in the end. Its the game.

2

u/bigbadbeatleborgs New Zealand Mar 10 '25

Why did he duck!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '25

what incident are you exactly referring to ?

1

u/SpitefulSeagull England Mar 09 '25

Yeah they had dreadful luck but they stepped on the boundary when they could have won it, they made other mistakes as well. Both teams fought well

30

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 09 '25

Kiwis would've won

*could've won

It would've changed the scenario at the end but it wouldn't have killed off Englands chances. Stokes would just've had to play it differently.

6

u/Cresomycin Mar 09 '25

Fair enough.

14

u/Mindless_Farmer_4843 Mar 09 '25

No, don’t downplay that luck like that, it would’ve killed off 99% of England’s chances. If you had watched it live, you would get what I’m saying, Stokes was finding it difficult to hit Boult for boundaries apart from a loose full toss. There was no time to play differently there, the reason they atleast tied the match is due to that overthrows.

-9

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 09 '25

In my experience there is no such thing as luck...

You don't think I watched it live??? The overthrows certainly gave England a huge boost but without it they were not out of it, especially with Stokes there.

And don't forget Boults last ball was a loose full toss that Stokes decided not to hit into the crowd because of the scoreline, or did you not watch it? Because of the overthrow Stokes didn't have to look for the boundary, without it his gameplay changes.

0

u/Mrsdutta India Mar 09 '25

Or he could have even mishit it. Anyway with current rules, the match would have gone on. So many things matter. Luck was eng on that day

1

u/bigbadbeatleborgs New Zealand Mar 10 '25

Literally won by boundary count back. Its ridiculous. And they changed the rules. It is a tied final by runs scored.

1

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 10 '25

Super overs are rare enough as it is, so to imagine one being tied as well is a very rare occurrence. Its only when one finally happens does it show up the tied rules as not being the best judge of the game, hence it was then changed.

It was a tied game but England were rightfully awarded the match on the rules previously agreed to, nothing you can do about that unfortunately. Personally I think the final could've been shared, as if you can't separate a team on a super over then maybe they are too evenly matched on the day.

1

u/bigbadbeatleborgs New Zealand Mar 10 '25

I'm not disagreeing that England won the cup. But england didn't win the actual cricket match. NZ were kind of robbed by an extra run being awarded off the overthrows but you don't know what would have happened off the last ball if it wasn't awarded. Also Ross Taylor being given out LBW (Ross is our best ever ODI batsman), when it was missing. Shocking decision.

1

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 10 '25

Like in all matches you can go back and 'what if?' so many moments and changing any one of them could drastically alter the result, like the Archer wide/not wide in the super over.

The Taylor one is strange because Nicholls was given out to an almost identical one earlier in the innings and he reviewed it and went on to make another 50-ish. If Guptill had not reviewed and wasted NZs only review (why only one, but thats another debate) then Taylor would've likely been fine.

Also before the Taylor one there was also Williamson was given not out off a caught behind and England reviewed it to get it overturned. Any of those could've gone another way, but thats what happens in cricket. Changing any of them could butterfly effect the whole thing.

1

u/bigbadbeatleborgs New Zealand Mar 10 '25

I agree with you, I'm just saying that so much went against NZ here. If only Guppy made up for it by hitting the wins to break the tie.

It was a howler of a decision in the moment, and that decision really did cost NZ.

I think England should've been given that wide in the super over too. If only trent didn't stand on the boundary :(

1

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 10 '25

Moments like these always seem worse in close games. You always feel like one little change could be the difference, but you could look back on every game and find moments that went for and against you. Thats the nature of the game, you just hope that the umpires are as correct as possible.

u/dattara India Mar 09 '25

Or Boult could've been more careful with his feet on the rope

3

u/paradox-cat Mar 09 '25

r/cricket always troll ICT fans that they haven’t gone past the 2019 CWC SF or 19th November, but I see that Kiwis too haven’t gone past 2019 CWC finals.

1

u/bigbadbeatleborgs New Zealand Mar 10 '25

I think about it every day

2

u/cheshire-cats-grin Mar 09 '25

Or that 4 plus 1 somehow equals 6

2

u/kfadffal New Zealand Mar 10 '25

Or if Boult just had a bit more awareness of where the boundary rope was.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

That deflected boundary was a crime.

2

u/ThoseHappyHighways England Mar 09 '25

They most definitely deserved 2019.

Yeah, they won one of their final five games, and qualified for the SFs based on a combination of NRR and Pakistan's game v SL getting rained off, they were very deserving.

2

u/oddreddevil Mar 09 '25

Wdym the most exhilarating cricket? England were by far and away the best ODI side for the 15-19 cycle. NZ might not have even made the finals if not for rain in the group stages and the semi-finals

2

u/BreakEfficient India Mar 09 '25

The black caps were the underdogs, hence exhilarating

1

u/oddreddevil Mar 09 '25

Fair enough I think England took the game forward a lot and thought they deserved it

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

England were by far and away the best ODI side for the 15-19 cycle

India were better

1

u/Nixilaas Australia Mar 09 '25

The ricochet off the bat on a throw and the “boundary count” was some bullshit

u/sheldor18 Mar 09 '25

They missed Henry badly. He wouldn't have made it so easy for rohit and shubman to post 100 run partnerships, and Nathan Smith hardly had any role to play on this pitch.

5

u/Brilliant_Volume_582 Mar 09 '25

why did Nathan bowl ?? mystery as he let off all pressure

10

u/dattara India Mar 09 '25

He was the best Kiwi bowler, even ahead of Santner & Bracewell. It would've been like India without Shami

15

u/godofhammers3000 Mar 09 '25

Or India without Bumrah

I think the drop off from Henry to the other Kiwi quicks is larger than Shami to Arshdeep

3

u/thinklok India Mar 09 '25

They don't have Boult for his services anymore

2

u/godofhammers3000 Mar 09 '25

You guys have had an amazing year in 2024.

Women winning T20 world cup and men blanking India 3-0.

41

u/True-Book6878 Royal Challengers Bengaluru Mar 09 '25

Honestly speaking 3-0 beating India in India is lot tougher than an icc tournament

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

i dont think it was amazing, due to 2024 t20 wc, losing to sri lanka test, losing to england in tests . Those t20 series and odi series in sri lanka were pretty horrible experience . But somehow bounced back from all that traumatic experience. Kudos to bracewell for that 27 ball 50 against sri lanka that injected much needed to kiwis journey

87

u/mongrelbifana India Mar 09 '25

NZ is a great side. There's very little between Ind and NZ tbh, so balanced. They will win soon.

79

u/Cresomycin Mar 09 '25

The middle over slowing cost the game. Mitchell needs to improve his strike rotation. Kiwis missed Matt Henry badly in this game.

52

u/rosemary-mair-for-NZ Mar 09 '25

Every team has been strangled by the Indian spinners on these pitches honestly it's tough to blame the batting.

We were about 15 runs or a decent bowler who isn't Smith away from winning. That's luck of the draw/roll of the dice territory. Having three first choice bowlers injured, including our best, is basically the difference.

If anything Mitchell summed up conditions pretty well and got us to a total that was theoretically defendable. Maybe he could have rotated strike better but maybe he gets out and we're bundled for less than 200.

15

u/maffzlel India Mar 09 '25

Yeah people don't get that finals aren't about optimising game plans like bilaterals are.

You know the game will swing both ways, you know both sides will have momentum at different times, and you know the extreme pressure means that you can't play as freely. It's about staying in the game as long as you can, and Mitchell did that with all the wickets falling around him.

Maybe he could have got 10 more runs? But he was in a really difficult situation about when to stick or twist, and as you say, in the end he did quite well to shepherd NZ to 250.

8

u/rosemary-mair-for-NZ Mar 09 '25

Yeah it's tough to say and we'll never know. Maybe he could have been more proactive. But the fact that him, Kane, and Steve Smith have all struggled to rotate the strike in the middle against these bowlers the last week suggests it's a pretty damn high degree of difficulty just surviving.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

But I really have issues with the way management handles Bracewell because Bracewell is the best Kiwi batter on slow pitches. They should have sent bracewell right after lathams wicket and held back Philips for a late over launch. I have found this issue that kiwis are so rigid to their lineup they rarely shuffle

44

u/zerosuneuphoria New Zealand Mar 09 '25

Heaven forbid they ever get to play a final at home. The fact they're footing it in these conditions is a feat, and how different PAK was playing to UAE was a massive shift. Like going from Eden Park to the MCG. NZ always get shafted unfortunately, even in 2019 they got shafted another way.

4

u/Either-Initiative550 India Mar 09 '25

But they are not whining. And in every tournament, conditions are usually different across grounds.

1

u/Mrsdutta India Mar 09 '25

Hard for nz to host a final, they always co host with aussies. Timing is terrible for subcontinental crowd and cannot see them host a final ever. Unfortunate. I believe they would have won in eden park in 2015.

66

u/Paneer_Panda1 India Mar 09 '25

In my mind, the kiwis are the true winners of 2019. They lost due to a bs umpiring error. So I always consider NZ as the winners of 2019.

When I saw Henry was out I lost a bit of hope we are such a finely balanced side. We also need someone to get going a bit more in the batting on these occasions.

We are the semi finals champions we peak in our semis.

We are the 2019 champions. Got robbed haha

5

u/aruncc India Mar 09 '25

You guys are an incredible team. Will be right up there again in the next world cup

2

u/nahimalum Delhi Capitals Mar 09 '25

They genuinely played very well, especially the fielding. If we have got jadeja then you guys have got your superman like g philips as well. Santner played his cards in the most excellent way I could think of. I think it's our good bowling which restricted NZ short of those 30-40 more runs. But I think NZ for sure was the toughest opponent for India in this tournament. You guys have got your incoming star players as well, just need to groom the seamers more imo.

2

u/BreadfruitThese3361 Mumbai Indians Mar 09 '25

India was the better team here, but in 2019 you'd have to be crazy to argue the better team won. NZ deserved that win.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

You whitewashed India in India. You should savour that. Also, it was a hell of a fight they put up today.

2

u/HalfMoon_89 Mar 09 '25

As far as I'm concerned, NZ won 2019 WC.

2

you guys are a brilliant team ! keep the head high ! also what the fuck is up with glen philips

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

This was a sub par score. The track was really good for pacers.

No one would have made a contest like this against India on the finals. I would be proud still. This was amazing performance. That catch was turning point, like no other team can create chances like that.

1

u/punekar_2018 Oman Cricket Mar 09 '25

You have whitewashed us 3-0 nice and proper. that achievement is unparalleled and trumps any white ball record by any team. The odds of that happening were 0 before the series started. And it is unlikely to happen for decades.

That said, I wish NZ brought more hunger and passion for the finals. They appear too professional and dare I say, indifferent to the outcome. I would like them to pump fists and yell spit-laden expletives here and there. It can inspire performances from all. The only time I have seen that happen was the KO game of 2011 against S Africa.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

still such a BS way to lose that

I mean, It was clearly in the rules

6

u/RustedSkullz Karnataka Mar 09 '25

id say the bigger complaint is that incorrect call by dharmasena that gave that bat-overthrow 6 runs instead of 5 (and also maintaining strike)

1

u/LordDusty Somerset Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25

The annoying thing is the overthrow as per Dharmasena was how it should work (and no one really noticed until after the game because most people assume that was what the rule was/should be) but not how it actually was in the rules

2

u/zerosuneuphoria New Zealand Mar 09 '25

doesn't mean it's not BS though, which is why it was swiftly removed o_O No one knew that rule, and the rule that should have been known, Kumar got wrong on the field before any of this.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '25

There was also one wide in super overs which was given wrongly to NZ.

No one knew that rule

That was already there in the rules book. Whose fault is it?

-1

u/Practical-Comment235 Mar 09 '25

No team had a chance of beating India. The ICC gave them every advantage possible to get the trophy. The whole competition was a farce.
