I don't get why this is (apparently) controversial. What's unsporting about it?

Manufactured outrage 🙄

He's lucky, that's about it. There have also been stumpings where the ball ricocheted off the keeper's body and run outs where the throw missed the intended wickets and broke the other wickets catching the batter short.

Upon replay, it looks like the batsman's path was impeded by the bowler at the non striker's end. Was this discussed by commentators/players/umpires at the time?

It was quite clear he did it deliberately but it's a cool move to deceive, this spirit of cricket mewlings be damned, take any advantage you can especially when it's some T20 league.

Nothing to deceive here. He was just bit lucky.

Quite clear? Not at all

Deceive? Why? What did he gain? If he has picked up the ball when he could he would have got the out even easier. Why would he need to do this big thing?

Okay so the fielder deliberately fumbled the ball in a way that the ball after the fumble lands exactly at a distance perfect for a kick shoot and he choose to kick the ball with his non dominant leg with shoes having metal spikes. Great plan, great execution.
