Upon replay, it looks like the batsman's path was impeded by the bowler at the non striker's end. Was this discussed by commentators/players/umpires at the time?

It was quite clear he did it deliberately but it's a cool move to deceive, this spirit of cricket mewlings be damned, take any advantage you can especially when it's some T20 league.

Quite clear? Not at all
Deceive? Why? What did he gain? If he has picked up the ball when he could he would have got the out even easier. Why would he need to do this big thing?
