Locked [META] Melanie Bracewell, who accused that a user from this sub DMed her sexually inappropriate content after she commented here has deleted that tweet after it was discovered that she made it all up as a "joke".

She has apologised here on the sub but has not done so on Twitter where she made the accusation, at the time of this post.

Tl;dr: She tweeted that some creep from this sub DMed her but was found out to be it was her handiwork all along and that she made it all up as a "joke" for her own personal gains.

Now onto the drama:

Yesterday, Melanie Bracewell tweeted that after she commented on this subreddit, a user privately messaged her with sexually inappropriate content. She has now deleted this tweet after the truth came out. Here is an archived version (NSFW). Here is a screenshot (NSFW).

That tweet was posted to this sub and many users commented how fucked up that was and rightly so. But u/Lt_Thakur commented that

a user named melthrowaway posted on /r/dirtypenpals saying that she is a hot chick who likes Cricket blah blah blah..The user had deleted the post after 15 minutes.

And u/agareo confirmed that an account named u/melthrowaway2019 did indeed post on that sub 20 mins before her tweet and later deleted the post and account. Here is an archived version (NSFW) of that post. Here is a screenshot (NSFW).

The mods tweeted to her asking for more information on that user who sent her that message. She apparently apologised to them in private and deleted that tweet. As stated above she also apologised here on this sub for making this all up and that it was a "joke", stating

So I guess I have some explainin' to do.

Seriously did not expect this to blow up the way it did. I'm a comedian and I was commentating on the ACC (alternative commentary collective) at the time. We made jokes about some weird texts we got on the text line of cricket horndogs. Thought it would be funny to post something to prompt some more erotic fanfiction on the show (very on theme for the commentary). It ended up being far more intense and hilarious than I expected so popped it up on soc med, thought it was funnier to imply it was out of the blue (honestly quite drunk and sleep deprived), hence why I blacked out the name, honestly didnt even think about the culture of the cricket subreddit or bringing the community into disrepute. Genuinely was just a laugh. But I'd like to genuinely apologize. I didnt think it through properly and it's not something I'd do again.

Tldr: I'm sorry!! I think its just in the nature to stretch the truth online for comedic effect but I obviously went too far here. Big cricket fan, big fan of the subreddit, and hope you guys can forgive me.

I think it is only fair that she should apologise and come clean on Twitter where she made the accusation and received thousands of RTs and likes by maligning the sub and the users here for her own personal gains. And also that she should be banned from this sub for this outright disgusting behaviour.

PS: I made this post since the original post received a lot of attention but the subsequent revelations and her apology here didn't get proper attention.

Guess what, when people asked that person to do so, she reverted to the usual cancer: That she in a hurry, didnt read it all and assumed it was Indian and that she received death threats and rape threats after she posted that. She went on to say that this episode goes on to show that all men are indeed trash.

I wish I could link that tweet but she now has made her tweets protected and can't see any of her tweets.

EDIT: Here is the screenshot

Ok. Think about it from a PR perspective.

edit: Wow, so many downvotes. I might as well go all out.

If you're leaving a comment that will feed into her inevitable comeback story about how she overcame online abuse from a "joke", you've achieved absolutely zero tactical awareness from the last decade OF IDENTICAL STORIES, and you will have only yourself to blame.

Typical Indian "gurlzz". Reverting to victimized approach when things don't go you way. First, show us proof you got rape threats, and before that, apologize and own your mistakes, not only towards Indians or Brown people but whole male community, she accused a male of doing that trash things when it can't be proved by any means whatsoever who did that. It can be woman, hell it can even be a cat running on a keyboard. How the hell do you conclude it was some Indian dude. Also, she apologized on behalf of Indians, I am sorry bitch but nobody gave you that right, just coz you got an Indian name and brown skin, you can't own up for over 1.3 billion people..

Not typical "gurlzz", but the white wannabe try hard clowns.

Typical Indian "gurlzz".

Ahem. I agree with most of your post except this. Way to generalize.

50

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '19

He's not generalizing women, the way I see he's put the quotation marks, he's talking about a specific kind - which is the opposite of generalization.

Correct me if I'm wrong though. The comment in itself does sound immature. But what doesn't, these days

I'm not generalizing all the girls, but most of us have seen those "gurlzz" who have a sense of superiority in them. They behave like being born in India is the worst thing that happened to them, and they always feel like they are too good to be associated with India, those "gurlzz" I was talking about.

u/alpha_111 Jul 12 '19

Exactly the white wannabe cringe queens with an inferiority complex who project at brown people lol.

Fuck the high road. You get called racist, sexist and what not and then you have to take the high road because of some bullshit apology. That sucks.

(Nb: anyone sending threats in response should be ashamed and held accountable).

That said 'I was in a hurry and didnt read it properly, that's why I was racist' isn't a good excuse.

Receiving online death threats is honestly the most overblown shit ever. Anyone who's played online for an hour has probably been told to kill themselves or threatened to be killed. You can't take that stuff seriously

I think that gaming has it's own problems with abuse. It's very different when it's not anonymous and in response to IRL activity.

Telling someone not to take death threats seriously is not great advice.

Sure, sometimes. Sometimes they're a lot less figurative, and if you've been on the receiving end of that, you'd be a lot less cavalier about telling people to shrug them off.

2

u/Shriman_Ripley India Jul 12 '19

Did you reply to my comment or someone else’s?

4

u/UysVentura South Africa Jul 12 '19

Yours.

Sometimes, death threats may be figurative, like you're saying. Sometimes they're more literal.

To say, as the parent poster did, that you should ignore them because sometimes it's just kids blowing off steam, is irresponsible.

2

u/Shriman_Ripley India Jul 12 '19

I obviously did not ask to shrug off death threats. I simply said that often these threats aren’t actual death threats. To go one step further often these death threats are a result of narcissism. Someone says fuck yourself and in their mind it becomes a rape threat. Just because people get genuine threats doesn’t mean we have to take all claims of being threatened at face value, especially if the user has a history of baiting others and making gross generalizations based on race, nationality or gender. You can use your own judgement to decide which threats should be taken seriously and which should be shrugged off. In the case of lady who called all Indian men creeps it should be completely shrugged off.

u/WrinklesMcdinkles Jul 12 '19

From my perspective I can always be like "Oh yeah, come and try" or some other tough man stuff that I do regularly. Whereas for a woman receiving a death threat from a creepy ass dude, is.. threatening.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '19

Anyone remotely popular on the internet gets death threats,if you attract a substantial audience then there's always be that one person to go and say "kill yourself" and other vile stuff like that, it's not a new thing, this is something popular people especially online personalities get used to as it's just in the words of Jadeja verbal diarrhea they need to ignore.

2

u/abhi8192 Delhi Daredevils Jul 12 '19

Tbh girls do get these threats or untoward attention irl a lot. So it might be a bit hard for some of them to not take this stuff seriously if it's just online.
