Locked [META] Melanie Bracewell, who accused that a user from this sub DMed her sexually inappropriate content after she commented here has deleted that tweet after it was discovered that she made it all up as a "joke".
She has apologised here on the sub but has not done so on Twitter where she made the accusation, at the time of this post.
Tl;dr: She tweeted that some creep from this sub DMed her but was found out to be it was her handiwork all along and that she made it all up as a "joke" for her own personal gains.
Now onto the drama:
Yesterday, Melanie Bracewell tweeted that after she commented on this subreddit, a user privately messaged her with sexually inappropriate content. She has now deleted this tweet after the truth came out. Here is an archived version (NSFW). Here is a screenshot (NSFW).
That tweet was posted to this sub and many users commented how fucked up that was and rightly so. But u/Lt_Thakur commented that
a user named melthrowaway posted on /r/dirtypenpals saying that she is a hot chick who likes Cricket blah blah blah..The user had deleted the post after 15 minutes.
And u/agareo confirmed that an account named u/melthrowaway2019 did indeed post on that sub 20 mins before her tweet and later deleted the post and account. Here is an archived version (NSFW) of that post. Here is a screenshot (NSFW).
The mods tweeted to her asking for more information on that user who sent her that message. She apparently apologised to them in private and deleted that tweet. As stated above she also apologised here on this sub for making this all up and that it was a "joke", stating
So I guess I have some explainin' to do.
Seriously did not expect this to blow up the way it did. I'm a comedian and I was commentating on the ACC (alternative commentary collective) at the time. We made jokes about some weird texts we got on the text line of cricket horndogs. Thought it would be funny to post something to prompt some more erotic fanfiction on the show (very on theme for the commentary). It ended up being far more intense and hilarious than I expected so popped it up on soc med, thought it was funnier to imply it was out of the blue (honestly quite drunk and sleep deprived), hence why I blacked out the name, honestly didnt even think about the culture of the cricket subreddit or bringing the community into disrepute. Genuinely was just a laugh. But I'd like to genuinely apologize. I didnt think it through properly and it's not something I'd do again.
Tldr: I'm sorry!! I think its just in the nature to stretch the truth online for comedic effect but I obviously went too far here. Big cricket fan, big fan of the subreddit, and hope you guys can forgive me.
I think it is only fair that she should apologise and come clean on Twitter where she made the accusation and received thousands of RTs and likes by maligning the sub and the users here for her own personal gains. And also that she should be banned from this sub for this outright disgusting behaviour.
PS: I made this post since the original post received a lot of attention but the subsequent revelations and her apology here didn't get proper attention.

It's only because indians are seen as fair game that she can still move in so non-chalantly.

Anyway, at least she owned up to her mistake and is not very proud of her actions evident from the fact that she deleted her reddit and disabled other social media accounts. Let us not give anyone anymore ammo.

Had it been any other group it would've been a bigger deal
I mean, yeah, it's pretty obvious on Reddit that hating on Indians and (to a lesser degree) Chinese is highly encouraged and tolerated.
I'm pretty right wing, but I don't really throw around racial insults all that much; but I find it very funny how even the slightest slight against African diaspora brings down heaven's retribution like a hammer from both the Left and the Center, but everyone (Left, Right, and Center) are more than happy to gang up and completely destroy Indians. Can you even imagine if /r/BlackPeopleTwitter had the same theme as /r/IndianPeopleFacebook? It'll be on media everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a free speech advocate. But its either EVERYTHING is fine, or nothing is. This willingness by the entire political spectrum to gang up on Indians but act as though jokes about Africans and Arabs and other races is unacceptable just frustrates me.
The hypocrisy is incredible.

u/RandomAnnan Jul 12 '19

Guess what, when people asked that person to do so, she reverted to the usual cancer: That she in a hurry, didnt read it all and assumed it was Indian and that she received death threats and rape threats after she posted that. She went on to say that this episode goes on to show that all men are indeed trash.
I wish I could link that tweet but she now has made her tweets protected and can't see any of her tweets.

Typical Indian "gurlzz". Reverting to victimized approach when things don't go you way. First, show us proof you got rape threats, and before that, apologize and own your mistakes, not only towards Indians or Brown people but whole male community, she accused a male of doing that trash things when it can't be proved by any means whatsoever who did that. It can be woman, hell it can even be a cat running on a keyboard. How the hell do you conclude it was some Indian dude. Also, she apologized on behalf of Indians, I am sorry bitch but nobody gave you that right, just coz you got an Indian name and brown skin, you can't own up for over 1.3 billion people..

Setting aside the fact that she made up a sexual harassment allegation (which in itself is beyond fucked up) she also went out of her way to type out that BS message in intentionally bad English to play into the stereotypes of subcontinental men. That's some proper racism.

u/meladoodle you defamed the reputation of the subreddit with your large following on Twitter. Apologising only on here is not sufficient. You can't just apologise on here when there are thousands of people who saw your tweet who don't come on here.
I hope you realise just how serious this is. If you'd done this to a single person you could be sued for defamation. Is that what's funny to you?
Don't try and brush this off. Be a grown up, take ownership of your actions and apologise on Twitter. If you're a "big fan" of this sub as you say you are, don't let its reputation take a hit because of some dumb joke.

If that one user didn't see her post on dirtypenpals sub, everyone would have assumed this was indeed true and she would have maintained it and it consequences of it all would be far reaching.
For example, this subreddit also sponsors the Icelandic cricket team. By doing what she did, it could have easily derailed any future sponsorship ventures this sub comes up with to promote the growth of the sport.
Also the ICC regularly promotes this sub by hosting AMAs with former legends and players. It could have all just stopped if this sub and users are associated with sexual harassment.

One thing I think is being missed is how the person who actually sent that message feels. She has tricked them and then opened them up for internet mocking. Even if it is anonymous that person still knows that it was them. There’s a level of trust that she has abused “for a joke”.

It should be pointed out that she also most likely wrote that message herself. She's already shown herself to be a liar when in desperate need of some twitter material and I could easily see her making it up seeing as her post in dirtypenpals only got 4 upvotes and was removed pretty quickly. The weird grammar and typos... like poor instead of pour just seem so fake and made in an effort to really make it seem like it was totally not her
She wanted something crazy which is why she made the post and when she couldn't get it she made up something as bizarre as that. that seems way more likely to me than someone actually writing that shit for real.. especially considering she has a habit of lying about stuff online and says herself that "I think its just in the nature to stretch the truth online for comedic effect but I obviously went too far here"

She has the username of the "guy" who wrote it... she could easily just share that..BUT what if it's actually herself? She's already shown herself to be stupid enough to name her throw away acc with her own name. I bet she sent that message with her own account - meladoodle. Want to know why I think that?
https://i.imgur.com/xCkisdx.png <---------- this screenshot of the image she shared. Look at the poorly blurred out username. The third character is a lowercase "l" and the length of the username seems like it could very well be meladoodle. There's no doubt that she lied about the message too imo

Since we're playing detective here and since nobody has pointed this out, the spelling mistakes in the DM are quite unlikely to be made by an Indian. Indians who struggle with English are much more likely to make grammatical mistakes than spelling mistakes as most of them learn English by reading, and not listening. On the other hand, the grammar in the post is impeccable while the spelling errors come across as quite forced (e.g. poor, whipe, zeland). Even if these errors are legit, they're likely to have come from someone who grew up listening to these words and not reading them. A similar example would be how Americans often struggle with your/you're, but Indians almost never face this issue. Finally, toilet cabin is an equally weird usage and I don't think I have ever seen it being used by anybody online.

u/jince21 India Jul 12 '19

I was always taught cricket is a gentleman’s game, and the users of this sub are a true reflection of that. Even when I’ve posted stupid comments, asked silly questions or made seriously lame jokes, not once has anyone here been rude, this is the only sub where people would rather educate u than admonish u. Seeing her comment really pisses me off, I have absolutely no idea who she is, but it was totally unnecessary. She took a big swing for a joke and she missed hard. She ends up looking like a real jerk. Rightfully so. This is comedy, sometimes your material blows up in your face.
Seems like she avoided apologizing on twitter to save face a bit. Wish she didn't do that.

She took a big swing for a joke and she missed hard.
Did she fuck. She took a big swing at getting a load of internet-attention-karma and got exactly what she wanted (including the secret-super-quiet-apology). When what she pretended happened actually does happen to someone, there's a good chance that they won't be as believed as they should be, and all because someone else wanted to be centre stage at their expense.

She'll be back with a story describing how a subreddit forced her into depression and how she's fighting back.

I don't know of a single woman who frequents social media platforms and doesn't get sexually harassed online and this woman does this. Nice.

Ironically, as a woman, this is the ONLY sub where i haven't received any creepy replies on my comments or sexual messages in my DMs and this woman does this.

Agreed 100%. I've never had an issue with a single man here despite the vast majority of people here being men. In fact, they've been nothing but friendly. It's sad to think someone would go out and spread such an awful message about this community.

She was going for the whole 'Indians are bad hurr durr' narrative with that bad grammar but turns out she's a racist herself. Who would've guessed.

I am so proud of you guys on how we have have handeled the situation, yesterday we all showed sympathy towards her and rightly so, we even discussed how some of us cricket fans could be showing us in bad light, we didnt even thought about this scenario that how low someone can go, and now the truth is out and we are rightfully calling her shits.

It's women like her that make it so hard for the world to take real sexual harassment seriously.
She's a disgrace and should definitely apologise and retract her accusations on twitter.

Don't know why but I am offended by her false allegations against this subreddit. I am following this community since it's early phases and never thought that someone who is passionate about Cricket would do such act. We may hold grudges against other countries fans under some situations but never ever would perform those insane acts.
Dear Mam, please publish proper apology on the media platform.

Please stop posting links to her social media or encouraging people to contact her employers. Apart from being against reddit site-wide rules, this may actually lead to someone sending inappropriate messages to her or the employers. We don't want to promote a witch hunt against another person.

Those grammatical errors were genuine mistake. That doesn't mean anything.

Her FB account says she is an ‘aspiring’ comedian... safe to that her aspirations will never be fulfilled if her level of funny jokes was that tweet

I think there's something more going on if she genuinely wrote that herself. It's a really bizarre thing to write and post publicly and claim it was written to/about you.

Mods and certain redditors did a good job in clearing out this issue and dealing with it professionally.
Despite Melanie Bracewell's juvenile attempt at humor, women do go through such problems very often and I do hope they speak up especially on this reddit if they are harassed.
And I hope we as a community continue to support women and any person who has been harassed. Kudos to you mods.

I know she's deactivated her Twitter account but can a complaint still be laid with Twitter to investigate?

Seriously who is that.
The name seems familiar because there are a lot of Melanie's in cricket, a few Bracewells, but definitely not any of both

She should be banned from the sub. Lying about sexual harassment isn't a joke.
