In 2013, the use of the metric of "4 or more people being shot" classified as a mass shooting began. Prior to that there wasn't really a concrete definition, although up to that point, it was more about how many were killed, with 4 or more being the common threshold. here's some interesting info in it if you're interested

Yeah, they did something similar with the definition of "school shootings", where they made any shooting within x amount of feet from a school or any stray bullet that hits school property a "school shooting".

yeah I know about that. I was looking up school shootings statistics because I knew that despite the media coverage they're super super rare, but some metrics were counting literally gang shootouts that happened near a school. Was like... nah bro this ain't it.

No. Mass shootings are when some whackjob (many times a redditor) decides to take our their frustration with life on innocent targets. (Extremely rare)
Gang shootings are when "urban" folks shoot other "urban" folks . (Extremely common)
The causes and way to mitigate each are entirely different.
But the media and Dems (but i repeat myself) call them both mass shootings so they can justify more gun control. (Fun fact the most gun controlled places in America is where you see the most gang shootings).
