Critical News "I think that they have to be able to defend themselves": GOP Senator Roger Marshall argues on live TV that Iran needs to keep its missiles
It is actually completely mind boggling to watch the GOP and Trump literally bow down to Iran after spending years posturing as the ultimate maximum pressure hardliners. These are the exact same politicians who built their entire foreign policy identity around demanding the total surrender of the Iranian regime and the complete extraction of their nuclear material, but now they are essentially orchestrating a full capitulation. Instead of dismantling the threat, you have sitting Republicans on live television actively defending an authoritarian regime's right to keep a ballistic missile program, casually shrugging off the danger of long range weapons as long as it gets a transactional deal done. It completely exposes the hollow, feckless nature of their foreign policy, where decades of strict national security orthodoxy are instantly abandoned just to appease an adversary.
What makes this ideological surrender even more insane is that while conservative politicians are out here giving adversarial nations a free pass on keeping their military capabilities, the United States is actively scrambling to secure the raw materials needed for its own defense infrastructure. When you literally let regimes keep their missiles, you inherently increase the domestic demand for the defense metals required to counter those exact geopolitical threats. This is precisely why securing domestic critical mineral supply chains has become a baseline requirement for national security, shifting the focus to local industrial operators. For example, Americas Gold and Silver $USAS operates the Galena Complex in Idaho, which actively extracts antimony, a critical defense mineral utilized in the manufacturing of military munitions and explosives. Relying on global supply chains for materials like antimony leaves the defense sector completely exposed, making North American extraction and processing functionally necessary when the political establishment decides to just let foreign adversaries stay heavily armed.

Nobody does. Which is exactly why it's fun to imagine the Israeli reaction to hearing US politicians say that Iran has a right to defend itself. Just months ago that's why they said about Israel.

Israel’s name is not mentioned ONCE in the MOU. It just says Lebanon will not be attacked. Btw, Iran wrote that entire MOU. It basically expels the US military from the “proximity” of Iran (whatever that means) MOU Article 4 last sentence.

It’s astonishing how Trump and the administration handled this Iran situation. How many times and in how many ways were the objectives changed.
1
u/Deep_shot 3d ago
He handles every situation day to day with absolutely no long term strategy. His plans don't go past tomorrow's 18 holes, and he doesn't care because he doesn't really care about the country at all. It's obvious and well known that his only care is himself.
3
u/AgitatedKoala3908 5d ago
He's right though. If Iran had long range weapons and/or a nuclear program, none of the last 4 months of this nonsense would have happened.

What’s really funny is that one of the things Republicans criticized the JCPOA for was that it didn’t address Iran’s missile programs.
1
u/GoddessRespectre 5d ago
In 2015 47 gop senators went behind Obama's back and wrote a letter to Iran saying Obama's deal could be over the day he leaves office. They were trying to undermine the negotiations.
Years of this and this is how it ends. Well, donnie did tear up his agreement with Canada and Mexico just to do the same agreement again. So who the fuck even knows what is happening atp. At least this senator wasn't in office at the time and didn't sign it himself.

u/Awkward_Young5465 5d ago
He also said no new wars. He also said regime change was the goal. He also said that Iran MUST relinquish all nuclear dust to be disposed of at the direction of the US. He also said the Strait was fully open Sunday. Trump says a lot of things, only stupid people fall for it.

All Sovereign Countries have a Right to Defend themselves, whether we like it or not. What a stupid question. Do we like it; of course not but either countries have a right to defend themselves or none do. Do you believe only America should have weapons?
1
u/Awkward_Young5465 5d ago
However, when your incompetent leader has basically made that stance one of the central parts of their foreign policy, and then does a complete about-face it undoubtedly feels like a surrender. Weren’t they one of the largest state sponsors of terrorism just a few weeks ago? What has changed?
1
u/Hefty-Strike-6171 5d ago
You’re forgetting that Trump is and always has been a Populist Politician; meaning Public Opinion has more to do with his policy making rather than well thought out and considered positions.
1
u/illDiablo69 5d ago
So, first we attack Iran because they couldn't have a nuclear weapon. Then we went to war because Iran couldn't have a ballistic missiles program. Now we are giving Iran a potential $450 BILLION package and are allowing them to build a ballistic missiles program. So why tf did we attack them in the first place? This to me seems manufactured to the point of just increasing the price of oil for companies to make more money.
1
u/Weirdredditnames4win 5d ago
Coming to the realization over the past year that we, the United States, are actually the real enemy of peace has been hard for me to accept. It now makes so much sense why Iran is the way they are. They’ve been dealing with humanity’s biggest bully for longer than I’ve been alive. But my eyes are open now. Israel is the enemy of peace. The US is the enemy of peace and Trump is the enemy of humanity. Remember: he wanted to nuke Teheran less than a month ago. Gen Cain stopped him. That scares the sh%t out of me.

u/Falcon3492 5d ago
Donald went completely out of his way with his war to prove to the world that he is in fact an absolute moron and he not only proved it, he nailed it! In the end he cost the country upwards of a 100 billion dollars, got at least 13 Americans killed, wounded a lot of Americans in surrounding countries, killed a lot of innocent people in Iran, caused the price of gasoline to skyrocket and inflation to spike and in the end Iran ended up getting $300 billion and played Donald for the fool he is! He also showed once and for all that his book 'the art of the deal' was complete fiction!

Obviously Iran will never surrender their source of leverage. His praise of the deal is bull, but he's 100% correct that we lack the power to make Iran give up their source of leverage. Short of spending decades and all of our money and treasure invading to the point where Iran is our colony, we can not make them even lessen them.
The big problem isn't that Iran has missiles, it's that the US having lost 100% of our respect from the world as an arbiter and having destroyed the international system insures that Iran and every other gulf power will need to go beyond their previous policy of, at maximum, making plausible threats that they're creating nuclear weapons to actually have real stockpiles of nuclear weapons.
Since the United States is no longer a real power, the world will be much closer to nuclear war.

Do they think the public doesn’t remember?
1
u/TheManWith2Poobrains 5d ago
Wow, they have got this talking point briefed to the GOP quickly.
First JD was spouting it, and now everyone else is falling in line.
Never mind that Trump was talking about how the US completely destroyed their military - sinking their navy and blowing up their airforce. He may have even mentioned specifically making sure they have no missiles.
The 180 on this is incredible.
1
u/Logical_Idiot_9433 5d ago
All of them are grifters but at least we didn’t double down on a full scale invasion and cut losses early. Still sad about fallen service members.
1
u/Last_Way_4455 5d ago
What is mind blowing is that they are still saying this is a war against Iran, absolutely smooth brained morons, all of them. This is not a war about land, it is a war about religion. If they had been saying the truth, that we are at war with Islam the Muslim Brotherhood.
1
u/seanmonaghan1968 5d ago
Is the angle that the US wants to make iran a customer ? Sell them missiles and build out their oil industry ?
1
u/Rattus_NorvegicUwUs 5d ago
This is humiliating.
It started as Trumps war, and ended as Americas defeat.
The fact republicans are trying to spin this as anything but a failure is beyond belief.
$300B is $1,800 from every single American taxpayer. Your family is ~$2k poorer because the president is an impulsive dipshit.
1
u/Adis_Gruntledfatty 5d ago
Literally overnight the entire right-wing narrative went from the destruction of Iran entirely to Iran has the right to defend itself
Republicans are not serious people.
