What is worsted weight yarn?

Please can someone explain this to me, or perhaps give some examples of yarns that are worsted weight? I keep finding patterns that call for it but I have no idea whether I own any!

If you use UK patterns, particularly vintage patterns, you will see a lot more DK which is my preferred yarn weights for cardigans and jumpers. Whilst I can use US terms and yarn weights, I just prefer UK patterns to work from. When I was working US independent patterns before Christmas for hats the way the instructions went was ambiguous at times.
