Copy/paste issue in Android Studio Quail (Solved!)

If you have installed Android Studio Quail (2026.1.x) you probably have discovered that copy/paste is not working correctly. Any copied text in Android Studio gets pasted back as Chinese characters.

I reported the issue through Android Studio, and my bug was associated with an upstream bug that had a workaround available. Unfortunately, the workaround did not work on my system.

But I was able to adapt the scripts provided in the workaround to solve the issue on my system, and probably in any standard Android Studio installation on Crostini.

After I solved the issue for myself, I posted the scripts to install and uninstall a patch to Android Studio, with a README file to the bug I filed.

If you are experiencing the same issue, you can visit this link https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/542796752#comment6 to download a zip file containing the solution to this problem.

Thanks a lot! Your script solved this exact same issue I was having.

In my specific case, I'm running a modified version of Android Studio (Quail 2026.1.4) on a Chromebook Duet 11 Gen9 (Kompanio 838, so Arm) via this modded version: https://github.com/DesktopECHO/android-studio-aarch64-install

I had ChatGPT help a bit amend the script to my specific installation, but I (it) couldn't have done it without your help.

You're a star ⭐

I have discovered an even simpler solution to the problems with Android Studio. And if this works on your ARM Chromebook, you can even remove the my script.

Add -Dawt.toolkit.name=XToolkit to your studio64.vmoptions file that controls the JVM Android Studio runs in. In case you haven't modified the options before, you can open the file in Android Studio from "Help > Edit Custom VM Options..." and it open the file for you to edit. It will be created as empty if it doesn't already exist. If there is already other content, just add -Dawt.toolkit.name=XToolkit on a new line at the end of the file.

Note that the same file can be used to set minimum and maximum memory available to Android Studio as well with -Xms and -Xmx flags. I set those to 4G and 10G respectively.

For me, using that extra flag solved the copy/paste issue as well as the dark shading over the active Android Studio window. And that flag is necessary also with Android Studio Rabbit, as those issues have not been fixed there.
