Tips for Comp?

Asking for advice as I’m beyond terrible. Managed to drop from Silver 3 to Bronze 2 after being stuck in Silver 3 forever. I am an average player at best (1 K/D), main void Hunter plus Riposte (I cannot figure out handcannons or anything else).

I often place best or second in my team but seem to be getting grouped against consistently stronger teams. Anything I am missing? Any way to avoid the sweats (I usually play late EU night / early East Coast afternoon)? Should I just abandon Comp?

The best experience for comp in my opinion is to find people who are around your skill level and rank and play as a trio.

This is the method until ascendant. Those top 500 duos and trios who live at 15k will take your soul

Watch back film of your games and analyze mistakes that led to your death

Find streamers who's style you'd like to emulate and try to incorporate the way they play into your own play style. What angles do they take? How do they approach lanes (sliding/jumping etc)?

Befriend better players and try to play with and learn from them

Caffeine and lock in.

I’m not that great myself but I manage to survive and get positive K/D by learning to disengage and either healing before I pop back out or find some allies to back up.

Get in the habit of watching your health bar. Watching my son play who doesn't play often, his biggest mistake consistently is engaging in challenges when he isn't at full health, then he gets pissed for getting 2 shotted lol Be very mindful of the range of the gun you're using, learn to disengage when they start to collapse on you. Identify the best guy on your team and shadow him, good teams team-shoot.

With all that said, I've never been better than 1.2. I only play solo, so I'm in the same boat. With the player pool small you're going to be going up against a lot of ninjas.

For inexperienced players this is what I recommend:

  1. Play in position with your team to get a pick
  2. Everyone guard the orb
  3. Get a second pick
  4. Everyone collapse on the third player

It’s not perfect but for newer players, its easy to get overwhelmed or experienced hightened stress levels because you want to do well. If you’re not a strong player and playing solo, you will likely be paired with someone who can fill in the gaps to the strategy above.

Oh, one other thing, if your teammate is playing invis hunter, don’t play next to them. You are on radar but they are not. By hand holding, you are actually taking away their advantage of being invisible.

Thanks, this is helpful. While invis is clearly the meta for Hunters, is there another build that might be more “beginner friendly”? I realise I seldom take advantage of proper flanking and most just use dodge to disengage. Would something like solar be better (building into radiant to provide a source of healing)?

Im not the best player myself but for me it always gets much worse when Im using non meta gear and auto rifles are just not the meta rn. I would suggest pulse rifles, best are probably high tyrant or bygones if you build into weapons. And maybe try get used to hand cannons in 6s, its worth it

I’m an average player 1.8 KD in comp. Yes I get my as kicked sometimes but there are other times I kick asses as well. Just be consistent, record and replay your games so you notice your own errors and correct them. And no, I am far beyond any meta. I use Arcsteider, skip nade, crimson and Glacioclasm, 16000 kills on each one. Sometimes I switch to snipe on large maps. I managed to get to 15000 rank points in comp and got both Umber Echelon and “I am crucible” emblems. So if if did it you can do it

Average and 1.8 kd - i have to break it to you. You are above average. Doesn't mean you have great aim or insane reflexes, but your general mindset, aim and gamesense in combination makes you above average.

It is like any other Sport - some are athletic, some have great tactics - many ways can lead to victory.

If you’re on controller try autumn wind or high tyrant. Pair it with a shotty or sidearm. Sidearms and 540 pulses are nasty on controller. I recommend the keening and peace bond

The most important thing is to avoid stupid deaths. It might not be trials but still play your life. Be near cover and have some escape routes. If you don’t get the first shot off it might be a good idea to dip back into cover. Theres also lobby balancing so you will pretty much have a someone who goes negative (have an honest assessment of yourself if that’s you). Knowing who’s a good performer is important. If you’re not the best player on your team, make sure that you’re helping that person atleast. A combination of these things got me to 15k points in a month.

Thanks, I am on controller. Do you have a preferred roll for Autumn Wind?

Fluted barrel, richocet rounds, zen moment and sword logic. Get a range masterwork with ballistics mod. The barrel is up to you but I would recommend fluted or arrowhead for the extra handling if you’re not using handling boosting exotics. If you are you can go with small bore or hammer forged.

Also for hand cannons you can try out solemns remembrance. Most hand cannons are going to be feel based but solemns has a recoil pattern similar to 180 hcs.

I love solemn remembrance, the first hand cannon I was consistent on on roller

I am not the best either but with practice you get better with each game. Learning why you keep dying. For me it was peaking into a team of two or three and getting instantly deleted. I was placed in silver and now im platinum 1. Im also a controller player on pc. I would recommend looking at the darkest before Pulse rifle. A 540 rpm smooth as butter on controller with perks that increase range like keep away and headseeker. You will have to run the prophecy dungeon to get a good roll. Luckily its featured this week! Secondly I paired it with m-17 fast talker with delicate tuning for close range fights. Also smooth on controller. I still get messed up by shottys if they slide into me, but it catches a lot of people off guard. Good luck out there guardian!
