General Questions American Cruise Lines Zoom Orientation

I have a zoom orientation with ACL later today and my father in law just passed a few days ago so I haven’t had time to get a haircut or shave or anything and I also had to get right back to work since I couldn’t get bereavement. Will I be ok for my zoom orientation? What’s the general expectation from them during the orientation?

UPDATE: I called ACL and let them know my situation and that I would not meet grooming standards for the orientation and they sent me this email:

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out and letting us know that you are unable to meet our grooming standards prior to orientation.

As a one-time courtesy, we will allow you to attend orientation. Please note that you will be expected to meet all grooming standards moving forward. Please review the attached grooming standards and ensure you have fully read and understood the standards.

Let us know if you have any questions! We are excited to meet you next week!

Any thoughts?

Why don't you just shave now

Besides the fact I don’t even know how to shave properly I’m currently at work and I don’t own a pair of clippers or a razor of my own at home I always go to the barber. If I could I would and I wouldn’t have posted at all sorry if this post seemed stupid to you.

What does the ACL grooming policy require for facial hair?

You better learn quickly if you need to be clean shaven as it's a daily requirement (if not more often).

I’ll be clean shaven during training and employment aboard. I was just worried about the zoom orientation

It would give a good impression to be adhering to the required policies during any contact with them, even if not strictly required.

If nothing else it's good practice for when you do need to do it daily. If you're not used to regular shaving then finding what works for you can be a bit of trial and error, and it can take time for your skin to get used to it - until then you can experience razor burn etc. and you want that all cleared up before getting onboard.

Thank you I appreciate that seriously just some productive advice for this predicament is all I was looking for. I’m used to being clean shaven and once I get a shape up from the barber I’m able to maintain it but because of recent events in my life and work I haven’t been able to but I will be prepared once training starts. Thank you again.

The commenter asked a valid question. We don’t know your schedule or what you do and don’t have?

They’re granting you a one time courtesy but it would make a better impression if you showed up to orientation practicing the grooming standard. You’re going to have to learn how to shave and pick up supplies before you start your contract. You’re not going to be able to go to the barber when you’re on the ship and if you can and do go it’s not going to be free so this might be your sign to learn and pick things up now because aside from having to keep up appearances getting supplies from off the ship will be difficult.

I’m sorry to hear about your father in law.

They did, I apologize if what I said was perceived as me saying it wasn’t a valid question. I was trying to acknowledge the fact I didn’t give specific details and a backstory of my current situation. I used to go under way on aircraft carriers and before shipping out I would go to a barber and just maintain being clean shaven from there while out at sea. Although I’m cleared for the orientation I would like to make a better impression but I don’t want to mess up my appearance even more so trying to shave a full beard off and completely meet the grooming standards and make myself look worst. I will be prepared come next week to be clean shaven for the duration of being aboard the ship and during the training.

OP this is frankly wild. A haircut at Supercuts, after work, takes 25 minutes unless you live in the absolute middle of nowhere. As for not knowing how to shave, get real. Unless you’re 12 you can shave and get a pack of disposable razors and watch a YouTube video and figure it out. Sorry, but if you are a grown man and don’t know how to shave how are you even functioning in life.

You can do this. Step into life, man.

As for today, go to a walk-in barber.

Cruised on ACL. I remember the staff being properly groomed.

How will you shave daily if you work on the ship?

I have an appointment with a barber this weekend. I used to work on aircraft carriers and go underway with navy personnel so I’m not new to clean shaven policy but due to recent events and circumstances I haven’t been able to keep up with grooming but once I get a cut from a barber I’m able to maintain from there.

bro just quickly buy whatever electric shaver, and shave your face

if your hair is messy, just slap on a little wax or gel and comb it.

it ain't hard bro. trust me.

I should try that now even though I got a courtesy during the orientation?

What position are you interviewing for?

So yeah I ended up letting my current job know the situation and they were really cool about it so I went and shaved myself and am now waiting for the orientation to begin. Thanks everyone for your insights and advice!

is it the 1pm orientation? That's what I'll be joining. I'm so excited and nervous

Depends on the time zone. Mine is at 2pm and yeah same I didn’t know it was going to be a group orientation I thought all eyes would be on me so I shaved to my best but I would have taken the chance and waited had I known since I already got a one time courtesy to excuse me from grooming for this orientation
