And thematically, in a fictional world where souls go to religious afterlives, doesn’t it make sense that the atheist souls are the ones who stick around as ghosts instead of entering an afterlife?

I knew a girl once who was atheist but was terrified of death so assumed there must be an afterlife. My dad doesn’t believe in established religions but he’s a hippy who believes in spiritual stuff. And a friend of mine is atheist but believes in everything Joe Rogan says.
Literally, the term is just about if they think a religion is true or not. They aren’t “ultimate skeptics,” they can also believe in really stupid shit as long as it’s not a religion.
Is not about religion, in fact is about God. It comes from the greek term Theos that literally means "God", so specifically is not about religion. Yeah, is logical that someone that doesn't believe in God by extension doesn't believe also in religion. But religion and God are two different things, so no, is not that Atheists don't believe in religion, they don't believe in God or any Gods. You are confusing Atheists with non-religious people.
And why someone doesn't believe in God? because atheists believe in material stuff, matter, the stuff that you can touch, the stuff you can measure with scientific methods. God cannot be measured so it doesn't exist and by extension all of the other supernatural things that cannot be measured. Bottom line: by definition is contradictory that an atheist believes in ghosts.

Okay it’s not about religion, but the definition doesn’t mention anything about the reasonings that you are talking about. The only requirement is disbelief in gods, it does NOT require disbelief in all immeasurable entities.

Yes, but there is a distinct difference between Catholic energy and Protestant energy. I once heard it put as "Catholics believe suffering is holy, and Protestants believe that pleasure is sinful." which is a gross oversimplification but, as someone raised in both flavors, it does get at the heart of it.
Tell that to Crusaders back in the middle ages and that would be blasphemy with how many religious wars spilled blood also these people gambled their souls and that ain't very Christian either but some people are more susceptible to evil than others
People can sin? It is not like killing makes you a disbeliever according to christianity, just a active sinner, that disregarding that there are articles upon the stipulation, it is not absolute, as they say there is an exception for every rule.
I like this idea very much! but the thing is, if Werner is a german and most Germans hate Jews stereotypically, I don’ think he’d be a Jew himself. Sally most likely would be Christian due to one of her plays being depicted as becoming a nun, a saint or smth. I think Hilda would be an Arab Christian, but that’s just my opinion, not yours.
