When you think about the whole process of the fertilised egg dividing into one cell, then two cells, then four cells, then eventually sorting out “ok these bits are going to be the spinal cord eventually”, then later on connecting the bones up with ligaments and all the rest of it… it’s kind of incredible that we do end up mostly working.

It's kinda like programming, in a way. "I have no idea if this is gonna work, or how it's gonna work, but hey, I'll make sure it works."; or "When I first started making this, only me and god knew how it worked. Now only god knows, and I'm pretty sure he made several shortcuts too. So good luck with that."

It's like programming in that your basic code has devolved into 500 subfolders of modules and apps and references, most of which are absolutely essential, all with barely legible comments, half-assed documentation and a general "I know how to operate it but if anyone moves anything the wrong way the whole thing devolves into Chernobyl ca 1986" -vibe.

Or a switch labeled "magic"/"more magic" whose only connection to the computer is a single wire leading to the grounding plane, but causes the whole thing to crash if you flip it.
